Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

So terminus stations should be outlawed now? Buffer stop allergy strikes again.

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

Yes but as those who know the area have said there are doubts it will be anywhere near as decent and therefore popular as the current route? There’s a wonderful irony from someone who wants to spend someone else’s money to put the railway back to pre-Beeching but would be happy for stock from...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

Of course but I’d like to know if this has been factored in and how much they think it would cost? Because I’d put money on it that if they have considered this (which I somehow doubt) you can probably add a few naughts on. I know enthusiasts love land grabs (see many other threads of this ilk)...

Oh well that’s alright then. I want a swimming pool in my back garden but someone’s forcibly bought it and built one of their own. I’m so happy for them. I notice you avoid the question of who is going to pay the compensation and relocation costs not to mention the money lost to the local...

Idea for a bi-directional line between Shipley & Bradford

Looking at the provisional unit diagrams for 6 car working there are none planned around p5 at Shipley.

Indeed as a fellow planner I’ve intently read it through in detail (turns out there isn’t much) and the plan seems to be that there is no plan.

Peak Rail and all the compensation for rehousing the whole society and its associated groups. I’ve mentioned it a couple of times but it seems that it gets conveniently forgotten, as evidenced here.

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

Ok we’ll take away London out of the scenario. Do the paths match up at either end to fit in with the current paths or are you looking at a huge risky recast at one or both ends? Has the question been asked of potential users (not just enthusiasts promoting every reopening) if they would use it...

Idea for a bi-directional line between Shipley & Bradford

I get what you are proposing but it seems like a hell of a big spend to solve what is at best a minor issue. Platform 5 will never need extending as Skipton - Bradford will not be seeing 6 car services. It does not need that sort of capacity. COVID altered commuting so much that 6 cars is now...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

So it’s been decided now that Northern are going to operate the line. Including the London service proposed? The new fleet is being planned around growth. However it thankfully doesnt take into account pie in the sky schemes that never have a chance of getting off the ground as that would be...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

Yes and has that been costed in? I suspect not. After all with realistic costings it would make all these reopenings look even less likely to happen from the current no chance of it happening (see also SELRAP, the kings of making spurious claims skirting nowhere near the truth and realism who...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

Exactly. This is what some people are totally blind to. Yes operational costs may be similar to the aforementioned rural routes but there’s one big difference. The other routes don’t need millions throwing at them to be actually built in the first place. They don’t need to evict and compensate...

Class 350/2 for SWR if 458 fails.

On the contrary, at one stage in the period prior to 5 car conversion they were one of, if not the most reliable DC EMU’s on the network.

Northern Tender for up to 450 units

No what I’m saying is that the 195’s will be cascaded to other parts of the Northern network where there is little interaction with overhead wires. There is a plan but I’m not yet at liberty to say what that is. 331’s are staying where they are.

    Class 458 Future Speculation

Wow this is a new one and makes a change. However, as mentioned in the many other ‘new uses for EMU threads’ Northern‘s fleet plan is in place and not one single idea for various classes is going to change that.

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

How many visitors would be lost to the area if this were to happen with the loss of Peak Rail? What about the loss of those who walk/cycle the Monsal trail which is extremely popular and an attraction in its own right? If there was any increase in footfall brought about by a new line would it...

The cascade will happen long before then.

29 new trains for Transpennine Express ?

No idea personally but I’m sure my colleagues at TPE will get it all fully costed and learn from any past mistakes by other companies (they already have bi-mode experience with the 802’s remember).

29 new trains for Transpennine Express ?

That’s all well and good but putting wires up at the terminal stations isn’t in the plans so tri-mode is the option which is being taken. More realistically and like I said in my previous post, if battery range is improved in the duration of the trains existence (highly likely) then the ICE...

29 new trains for Transpennine Express ?

Also if battery technology and range improves over time then there could be an opportunity to remove the diesel engines altogether. A solution to the cracking issue has been solved long ago. That line is beginning to become a bit tiresome to be honest.
