Is this for one person, do you have any railcards (or are you eligible for any) and do you have sorts of times in mind on those dates? And just to check when you say 'not bothered by splitting' I assume you mean you're happy to do so?

From just a quick look at the through Advance fare, it's quite expensive.

£77 Advance single Newcastle to Exeter on 22/12/12 (06:45 or 07:40 departure)
£77 Advance single Exeter to Newcastle on 03/01/13 (07:23 or 08:23)

so total £154! I'm sure someone who is good at split ticketing can get these prices down, I'm no good at that unfortunately!

If you don't mind taking a bit longer to get there you could look at this combo:

06:55 Newcastle - > Sheffield 09:05 = £8.45
09:47 Sheffield - > St. Pancras 12:05 = £21.00
13:20 Waterloo - > Exeter St. David's 16:42 = £26.50

= £55.95 one way. Similar tickets are available on the return.

Or go Newcastle - Sheffield, Sheffield - Bristol £39.50 and a Bristol -> Exeter OP Return is £25.40 which gives a £60.65 one way fare if the same can be achieved between Bristol and Newcastle for the return.

I haven't looked at other options, but From the North East on an advance purchase ticket it is generally cheaper to go to St. Pancras than Kings Cross is my experience but it takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours more to do the journey. If price is key and time is plentiful then it's worth exploring...

Is that a cheaper way or the cheapest that you want? We can not guarantee to find the cheapest and I am reluctant to attempt to find the cheapest, as most people reject it as not being best value.

It appears that a cheaper method, using CrossCountry is to "split" at York, Chesterfield, Derby, Birmingham Stations, Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Parkway.

But that is not the cheapest.

If you are certain you want the cheapest, then I will attempt to find the cheapest, but will only do so if you promise to take the route I identify as likely to be (but not guaranteed to be) the cheapest ;):lol:

Note that I am not including Advance tickets in the above calculations, and this is for 'walk-up' travel. If you want Advance tickets, take a look at a train booking site, and if you cannot find a good through ticket, look at splitting, for example you could try Newcastle-Manchester on TPE, then Manchester-Exeter on CrossCountry, or going on East Coast to London then SWT to Exeter, there are many possibilities....

That sounds very reasonable could you tell me what the rough distance is between st pan and Waterloo. Also what is the rough connection time for that

An official minimum connection between St Pancras International and Waterloo is 61 minutes.

This can normally be done using London Underground in under 40 minutes NR platform-to-NR platform at a leisurely pace assuming everything runs smoothly.

trainscanbecheaper.info can often provide 'inspiration' for working out where to split tickets.

For an open ticket, the best it suggests is £129.90 return; splitting at Clapham Yorks (via Carlisle), Bentham, Whiston, Huyton, Shenstone, Droitwich Spa and Yatton. (It's the same price for a ticket from Sunderland, as you can use that on the Metro.) So perhaps not practical, but quite an adventure!

Or this:

06:55 NCL -> SHF 09:05 £8.45*
09:27 SHF -> TAM 10:32 £11.50
10:48 TAM -> CNM 11:51 £11.50
11:52 CNM -> BRI 12:42 £7.50
12:44 BRI -> EXD 13:42 £12.00

* East Coast website 10% discount fare.

Total £50.95

The train between Tamworth and Exeter is the same train but your seat reservation will probably not be in the same place so you may have to change seats at Cheltenaham and Bristol if the train is busy.

There may be cheaper options still - like for example waiting in Bristol for the 14:44 departure would get that leg down to £9.50. It depends how long you are willing to wait to make a saving of a few more pounds!

Hmm. That sounds like quite a nice day out! If you look at some of the tickets suggested and analyse the routes you would need to travel, you'll find that you can start and finish some of those tickets "short" (but check the ticket restrictions on brfares.com to make sure it's allowed).

For example, you could stop short at Lancaster on a Newcastle to Clapham ticket, meaning you wouldn't need the Clapham to Bentham ticket at all. Edit: no you couldn't because that fails the fares check rule - but it's worth checking the other tickets.

Remember that your train must stop at stations where you switch from one ticket to another.
