Well since I've just clocked up 10 thousand miles (10,003 to be precise) I thought I'd check in and give a more enhanced review of the game and also find out how everyone else is getting on.
After taking out a bank loan I acquired myself a nice new Scania R440, reg MA62 ADO. I've now driven this for 8,593 miles and love it to bits. It has had 4 new engines as I am constantly upgrading in an effort for maximum power and it currently packs 440 Horses. I've upgraded it to a topline cab as well since I've been trekking all over from Aberdeen to Bratislava. My only gripe with my lorry is it still lacks power for big loads and inclines, I note that the Volvo trucks already offer 700bhp engines whereas I would have to wait until level 20 to unlock the same for my Scania. A nice addition before I forget is the ability to add personal plates to the cab, one on either side of the windscreen. My drivers side says "Cribbers" and the passenger side says "MCFC"
A very nice touch and I'm looking forward to seeing more surprise additions in later levels.
On the detail front having traveled around a lot I can now say that the guys and gals at SCS have done an excellent job, the M62 for instance splits for Stott Hall farm, with Booth Wood Reservoir on the left, it also has Scammonden Water on the right along with the longest concrete arch bridge in Britain (Scammonden Bridge) just after it. Is it worrying that the Germans have been studying our Reservoirs in detail?
Ahem, moving on...
All of the truck models are in excellent detail with some licensed manufacturers, Scania, MAN and Renault with Volvo, DAF, Mercedes and IVECO all featuring but with altered names (Valiant, DAV, Majestic and IVEDO respectively). Despite the altered names the those vehicles do look identical to the real thing and 3rd party mods can replace the labels with proper authentic ones. It seems due to the sucess of Euro Truck Simulator 2 that SCS are planning on obtaining licenses for other manufacturers with DAF already confirmed as arriving in a patch due soon
As per the SCS Blog
Now for just a few little issues, when I crash into someone I get fined which is fair enough but when someone drives into me I don't get any compensation for it and have to pay for my repairs myself. Particularly infuriating when a car overtaking a lorry comes onto my side of the road and hits me head on outside of Swansea...
A quick patch has been released which should fix some potential program crashing situations (I've not encountered any myself) and has also "fixed" the fatigue system. With the fatigue system I appreciate the yawning and the eyelids closing (that goes right back to the days of Hard Truck) but what I'm not keen on is that the yawning starts with 4 & a half hours to go before a break is required. It's a little irritating but not a game breaker. I noticed something earlier when I relocated two of my Scottish based drivers & vehicles to Liverpool, their registration numbers changed which is a shame given there was no need to change them over.
I should mention that something else seems to have happened with this patch given how many people are filling the ETS forums complaining their bootleg copy is no longer working, nice work SCS
It would be really swell if they could tweak the management side of things too, I'm not having much difficulty managing a small fleet of vehicles but when it gets to 100 I'm not looking forward to having to modify each vehicle in turn when a simple method of selecting multiple lorries and changing them as one will make it so much easier. I didn't have fun changing the livery on my fleet of 16 lorries as each one had to be done individually and also there is no way to set a "template livery" I have to use a preset one and modify it each time (though the option to save custom colours is helpful).
Anyway, that's about enough for now as I really need to get back to my driving...
