I have to agree with everything Darandio says. They really have hit the nail on the head this time around.
It is probably the best truck sim I have ever played. The realism is astonishing, SCS have sorted all the little niggles that players had with their previous offerings and done so much more.
I love the fact that you can customise your truck with light bars and different wheels meaning you don't have to be a wizard with a 3D modeling program to add bits to your truck and, the custom paint jobs are great, finally I don't have to extract the skin using DXT to put my own mark on the truck. I can't wait until the hardcore modders get hold of it, I can see some amazing community made DLC coming.

I visited Dover yesterday and thought it was fantastic having to actually board a ship, the Channel tunnel is the same you have to go down the appropriate ramp and then drive onto the train, the only issue is that the train is loaded with cars and not lorries. I'll give them their dues though they even got the livery of the ET-Class 9s, though if my memory is right they have numbered them 8xxx - like that's a problem :D

As for cities I've visited,

Manchester
Sheffield
Liverpool
Hull
Grimsby
Carlisle
Swansea
Birmingham
Cambridge
London
Dover
Southampton
Amsterdam
Rotterdam
Calais

All have been nicely detailed and though while the actual roaming parts of the cities are supposed to be on the outskirts of the city London seems far too small, again though it doesn't really detract from an excellent game.

Another thing pointed out earlier is that traffic can now "flash you out" which is an excellent little bit but more importantly it is possible to flash the traffic to encourage a car to pull out and thus give yourself a bit more room on a tight junction. I did hit a sticky patch on my way from Liverpool to Swansea as a lorry wanted to turn right, was half way into the junction (but still in lane), a car waiting to turn out of the junction (and thus turn in front of the lorry) and a car coming from the opposite direction wanting to turn the same direction as the lorry, all three formed a stalemate and after a few minutes I realised it wasn't going to fix itself so just drove down the right hand lane and past them all waiting at the junction, I've only seen this happen once so far but if it does happen more often perhaps SCS could patch it so that if there is a big build up like that (almost like a glitch) that some vehicles "fade out" and disappear.

Anyway I'm back after a day at WBQ so it's time to get in my shiny new Scania and hit the road :D

I think you've been using the wrong train. ;)

The only thing I don't like about the channel tunnel is that you don't actually drive along the train, just onto the loading wagon.

I've only had it since last night, and I've already had my lorry on it's side after some rather enthusiastic driving on my way out of Calais. :D

Well since I've just clocked up 10 thousand miles (10,003 to be precise) I thought I'd check in and give a more enhanced review of the game and also find out how everyone else is getting on.

After taking out a bank loan I acquired myself a nice new Scania R440, reg MA62 ADO. I've now driven this for 8,593 miles and love it to bits. It has had 4 new engines as I am constantly upgrading in an effort for maximum power and it currently packs 440 Horses. I've upgraded it to a topline cab as well since I've been trekking all over from Aberdeen to Bratislava. My only gripe with my lorry is it still lacks power for big loads and inclines, I note that the Volvo trucks already offer 700bhp engines whereas I would have to wait until level 20 to unlock the same for my Scania. A nice addition before I forget is the ability to add personal plates to the cab, one on either side of the windscreen. My drivers side says "Cribbers" and the passenger side says "MCFC" :) A very nice touch and I'm looking forward to seeing more surprise additions in later levels.

On the detail front having traveled around a lot I can now say that the guys and gals at SCS have done an excellent job, the M62 for instance splits for Stott Hall farm, with Booth Wood Reservoir on the left, it also has Scammonden Water on the right along with the longest concrete arch bridge in Britain (Scammonden Bridge) just after it. Is it worrying that the Germans have been studying our Reservoirs in detail? :D

Ahem, moving on...

All of the truck models are in excellent detail with some licensed manufacturers, Scania, MAN and Renault with Volvo, DAF, Mercedes and IVECO all featuring but with altered names (Valiant, DAV, Majestic and IVEDO respectively). Despite the altered names the those vehicles do look identical to the real thing and 3rd party mods can replace the labels with proper authentic ones. It seems due to the sucess of Euro Truck Simulator 2 that SCS are planning on obtaining licenses for other manufacturers with DAF already confirmed as arriving in a patch due soon As per the SCS Blog

Now for just a few little issues, when I crash into someone I get fined which is fair enough but when someone drives into me I don't get any compensation for it and have to pay for my repairs myself. Particularly infuriating when a car overtaking a lorry comes onto my side of the road and hits me head on outside of Swansea...

A quick patch has been released which should fix some potential program crashing situations (I've not encountered any myself) and has also "fixed" the fatigue system. With the fatigue system I appreciate the yawning and the eyelids closing (that goes right back to the days of Hard Truck) but what I'm not keen on is that the yawning starts with 4 & a half hours to go before a break is required. It's a little irritating but not a game breaker. I noticed something earlier when I relocated two of my Scottish based drivers & vehicles to Liverpool, their registration numbers changed which is a shame given there was no need to change them over.

I should mention that something else seems to have happened with this patch given how many people are filling the ETS forums complaining their bootleg copy is no longer working, nice work SCS :D

It would be really swell if they could tweak the management side of things too, I'm not having much difficulty managing a small fleet of vehicles but when it gets to 100 I'm not looking forward to having to modify each vehicle in turn when a simple method of selecting multiple lorries and changing them as one will make it so much easier. I didn't have fun changing the livery on my fleet of 16 lorries as each one had to be done individually and also there is no way to set a "template livery" I have to use a preset one and modify it each time (though the option to save custom colours is helpful).

Anyway, that's about enough for now as I really need to get back to my driving...

How much are we looking at for theses games/sims, they look really good and I might get one of them. How much are the DLC and how good are they?

I've never known there to be any 'official' DLC released by the creators of the game. Most downloadable content, including new skins for trucks, is available free on the internet.

SCS have said that they will be doing expansions to the map in the future, I guess they will be adding Spain and Portugal to the map as they are a big part of Europe which isn't included. I don't know however weather they will be included as part of a future patch, free DLC or paid for DLC.

To be honest I can't see them charging for it, or at least charging much for it.

There are rumors that they will be adding Ireland to the mix too. And they have confirmed that they have secured a licence from DAF trucks to use their name, that will be released in a future patch.

Most of the DLC you see for these sims though is community made, SCS make it so easy to open p and reskin the truck and trailer files, and if you are good with a 3d modeling program then its very easy to make new trucks and trailers.
I have included some screenshots of my reskins, for you to take a look at.

I have been a loyal SCS Software fan since they released their first simulator. The new Euro Truck Simulator 2 is absolutely amazing. Developers did an outstanding work. Well worth the price.
I hope they release a variety of DLCs in the future.

Can someone link to where we can purchase it in the UK. http://www.eurotrucksimulator2.com/world.php says not available in the UK.
I am quite interested as have driven through Calais down to Metz as a previous poster mentioned here, but did the drive for real in July

http://www.eurotrucksimulator2.com/

There we go - UK £22.95. May be cheaper on Amazon.

'Free' download will be trial, full version you have to pay for (as like any game)

The patch was released last week and sadly wasn't a great success and has revealed quite a few new problems which the folks at SCS are trying to fix.

I didn't download the patch as I am rather skeptical of patches (or buying things on release date) so have dodged a bullet there. Once again I find it terribly amusing that people are complaining that their counterfeit game or codes are no longer working - to the point where they have gotten SCS to put up a post about it in their blog... To quote Rimmer, "Like German tourists, the stupid are everywhere"*.

They have made a post about DLC which seems to test the water as to how much we would pay for extra content, given the initial cost of the game I would expect the price to be a tenner or less (after all only EA are allowed to charge the cost of the original game for an extra pack - ala every Sims add on ever...). While I am very eager for new places to visit I hope that they get the game fixed first, and implement some simple features which people keep asking for (mainly a log for each driver and better company & fleet management - the ability to upgrade/edit several vehicles at once) and perhaps seeing other vehicles from the players company out and about.

I've taken a bit of a break from the game at the minute, mainly because I've been tied up at the ELR & waiting in the freezing cold for Lizzie to arrive at Wigan but also perhaps because I'm handing my head in shame from a god awful accident in Amsterdam when I flipped my lorry load of Liquid Nitrogen across the entire motorway...

* That's an old joke from Red Dwarf so no offence intended to Tourists of the German persuasion.

Getting hooked on to it already. took me a while to grasp the steering, as i was oversteering a lot. Havent worked out reversing well yet, always seems to go wrong.
Bought my code direct from the website previously mentioned. Completed a few missions now with minimal damage. dont think I'm good enough to risk a bank loan yet to buy a truck of my own!

I find the steering is better than I had expected, mainly due to how it gradually resets as the vehicle moves along (great on junctions, but a little less great on gradual motorway turns).

A bit of advice for reversing, I found when I was first starting out is that switching to the exterior movable view (no 2 I think) and rotating the camera so that it is facing the cab looking back. This gives you a chance to see your wheels so you have a rough idea of what is going on.

I did 16 jobs before I took out a loan, I kinda miss the excitement of not knowing what vehicle I would be driving but believe me it's worth making the step up to your own lorry. On the "agency" jobs (the quick job, I think of it as agency work as that's what it is like) the rewards are fairly little, XP wise the reward is the same however cash wise you are loosing out as the agency takes the majority for the cost of the vehicle and fuel etc... A lucrative route is the cross channel stuff (you still pay for the crossing despite the agency paying for expenses such as fuel) though this is due to a flaw in how the rewards are calculated. If you own your own vehicle the financial reward is generally 2 or 3 times more than if the agency provided the job.

It is possible to pay off a carefully used loan after 20 jobs depending upon what jobs you take. You will have to buy a depot to house your lorry which costs about £100k, even a basic lorry doesn't come cheap (I think I bought my Scannia for £180k) but like I say it is worth it in the end.

Careful driving doesn't necessarily mean you won't get damage, I have only damaged my load once through my own fault however I have had damaged loads several times due to other drivers (my favourites being rammed from behind at speed whilst I was very slowly crawling up a steep hill on a country lane in Wales, having a head on smash with a car that was overtaking another lorry despite being in a no overtaking lane and finally having drove all the way to Manchester from Poland (with the delivery destination so close I could have coasted there) I got slammed into the side at a roundabout which ruined the trip and cost me most of my rewards.

Good luck & happy trails :)

When I started, I took a 100k loan and re-payed it in 25 deliveries (short and long runs).
I have now fully upgraded my garage in Carlisle and purchased my first truck.
Indeed, AI traffic can be frustrating. The biggest accident I had was when a lightning fast car slammed in my trailer from behind on the German highway. This resulted in 7k of damage to my trailer and lorry as well.
I always look both ways even if I have the right of way. It saved me from accidents numerous times due to AI vehicles not stopping at all.

*Off topic: By the way, awesome videos Phil. Subscribed. :)*

I have to say I am struggling with ETS 2 at the moment. So far most of my driving has been in the dark (which is never a great help), but I find the steering on the game to be vastly inferior to the original ETS and UKTS. At slow speeds, it feels as maneuverable as the Titanic, and precise parking in depots is impossible. I spend the day 'twitching' backwards and forwards, and in the end concede and hit enter for the auto-parking.

The scenery (what I have seen so far) is good, but the steering I'm really finding problematic. What sort of steering settings are others using?

I've trialed various steering sensitivities and have finally found my preferred level of sensitivity, Probably the best thing for you to do is trial and error.

Yes, I think it will just come down a case of play around and find what's best. Still, gives me an excuse to spend more time on there ;)

In my case, it took me a long time to find satisfactory settings.
Basically, I have moved the sliders all the way to the right for steering sensitivity and steering non-linearity.
I have also moved the steering dead zone slider all the way to the left.

So.... Update time.

Got 130000 sat in the bank, so thinking of getting my own truck soon. Most likely a MAN or a Renault, as I can't stand Ivedos, DAFs seem pretty slow, and whilst you're limited to 56, I'm sure as soon as I get on the lanes I'll be wanting to take advantage of faster acceleration.

I've visited about half of the UK cities, Calais, Metz, Reims and Lille, a couple in Germany and Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Most journeys end with a bit of damage of sustained, hence why I'm holding off buying my own truck for a little while. Reversing is easier at WGCC and the other chemical company yards, plenty of space to line up. Trameri depots are horrific for deliveries.

Haven't encountered any Contraflows or too bad traffic conditions as yet, although my driving + narrow roads when works are taking place is never a good combo.

Oh, and only 5% damage for rolling my truck and it's load of acid on the sliproad by Dover? I'll take that!

My first truck is a Volvo, and though I'm only on level 4 on that profile, it's already got the 750bhp engine.

That's not bad at all. I'm going to make a couple more deliveries, get more experience destroying somebody else's truck before I put mine through torture :)

Love the trucks, wanted to do some of my own reskins but cant open the base.scs, tried 7-zip and winzip, says it cant unzip as archive??

Any ideas? :)

As for the game itself, i maxed out the bank loans and bought two trucks and hired a driver but my hired help is useless he's making a profit of £16 a day.......

To open up the Base.scs you need an scs archive extractor, you can get it from the ETS2 Website or the Scania Truck Sim website, there are various video tutorials on Youtube explaining how to open up the base.
I have done a skinning tutorial as well located, here.

Oh and Zulnex, I think we may have met on another forum buddy :)
