Hope they don't eat too many sprouts......don't want no smelly fumes coming from the trains.
Depots have to have enough room to hold the entire fleet, like at Xmas when everything is back on depot but this is no different to 02:00-04:00 in the morning on any given day where the entire fleet is out of service and back at depot (apart from some specific TOCs that unusually have a few overnight services like TPE)
With careful planning and some security measures , this can be avoided. Some TOCs usually park their trains up in unsecure locations over Christmas that are within easy reach of graffiti vandals.
I have seen a Christmas Special Traffic Notice in the 80's with a train running from North Pole Jct at 23.59 on Christmas Eve, arriving back 00.01 25th Dec.

Northern do have a depot at Sheffield for their units. Additionally, Northern also use the through roads at Sheffield to stable large numbers of DMUs overnight and at weekends. I would suspect that Christmas day stabling arrangements at Sheffield are similar to the scene early on a Sunday morning. What happens in places like Sheffield? There must be a fair few train based there for early morning services, however there is no depot in Sheffield. What happens to the trains overnight there?
