Blimey I'm suprised there are that many.....

You have stated your favourite - which of the 218 was the worst

Well yesterday at Gilfach Fargoed, the station had no big sign on the platform nor the double arrows so that was a bit awkward in terms of satisfying the picture taking aspect.

I do get irritated with signage to stations in general. Okay locals may overwhelmingly use these places I visit but there is no harm in putting a little sign towards the place here and there so in that regard, I would go with any of Rhoose, Cadoxton or the Aberdare/Treherbet stations upto Treforrest Estate. Easily added 3 hours to my journey times there >.<

Are the platforms at Gilfach Fargoed long enough for a 'big sign'.

I must say the station was a curiousity about 10 - 15 years ago when Rhymney commuters formed with Mk2 air-cons used to call there.

Strictly within Wales this thread. If only it was to the left a bit... :)
Knighton (Treclawdd) - Dyketown after Offa's Dyke is in the former Welsh county of Radnorshire now Powys in Wales. You've got me wondering now as to whether the border is actually between the station which is on the outside and the town. If not, it is very close.

The border is between the town and the station, with the station being in Shropshire. It's very close (in fact I think the border follows the railway boundary at one point). Map

Purely for the reason that it's my local station, I do like Cardiff Central.

Queen Street is alright, with the two new platforms and the already refurbished café I think it'll be good!

I also like Cwmbran and stations on the Welsh Marches Line too.

And, purely because of it's amazing footbridge, I do like Newport!!

Whitland for me. Something about the long closed 1970s Booking office.

I used to enjoy going in the waiting room at Pontypridd before it was refurbished as the booking office. It had been the booking office before and was one of the last stations locally I could find the sprung turntables. Much as I disliked Booking Office work I did enjoy using the turntable and the variation in spring power. Amazing how far you could get a 50p to fly. :D

If the border is shown correctly it cuts through the middle of a car park !

I'm afraid I must disagree with you re Cardiff Central. It can be cold due to it's situation rather than quality. Refreshment facilities are atrocious for the capital of Wales. There is an Upper Crust Burger type Bar in the open air resembling a Burger Bar on Platforms 1/2 and which has mo seating area outside it. There are refreshment facilities (Upper Crust and Pumpkin combined) but these are below platform level and outside the ticket gates. It is poorly advertised (if at all) on the platforms and virtually remote from the trains so people could keep in touch with train running and withouit facilities to inform re train arrangements.
Newport - Well you're on your own. The footbridge might be nice to look at if you appreciate artistic design. It is like a route march to cross between platforms, higher flights of steps than necessary. Station facilities such as toilets on 2/3 and the Buffet are at the wrong end for the trains. There is only outdoor waiting and seated area on 2/3, the busiest platforms, again like the buffet, there is an indoor waiting room remote from where the trains actually stop. I have not heard any good word about the station since it's re-furbishment especially from a passenger convenience perspective.

Llandudno's really nice to be honest. Decent enough waiting room, but a bit pricey.
Prestatyn and Rhyl were nice, but the posters were very scary when I was there a few years back.

Personally I quite like Pontypridd which has a lot of visible history and has been improved greatly since the days of its outside toilet!
Agree with comments about Cardiff Central but there is an M&S and the eyesore that is Newport. A lot of money was spent making it ugly.
Also like several stations all over Wales for various reasons - eg you can get a pint there or next door: Porthmadog, Aberystwyth and Pembroke Dock are licensed. Fortunately most are well-sited and have a story behind them too!

Is there an elevator to Platform 1/2 at Cardiff Central and to the Cardiff Bay branch Platform at Cardiff Queen Street?

I must agree, it can get quite chilly. However, there are waiting rooms situated on all three platform blocks (i.e. 1/2, 3/4, 6/7), all of which are heated and are actually very warm and cosy!

I think Cardiff is fine for refreshment facilities. There is a Spar, a WH Smith, an Uppercrust and a Marks and Spencer available. Admittedly, the fact that it is outside of the barriers is slightly inconvenient; however, if you show a valid ticket to the gateline staff and mention that you want to buy some refreshments, they are more than happy to let you pop out and come back again.

They are poorly advertised on the platforms themselves but when you get down the stairs and look at the signs facing towards the barriers it is slightly better informed.

I did GCSE Art and A-Level Art; a subject I'm very passionate about!

PHILIPE said:

As is the case with most major stations in the country, there is step-free access to all platforms, i.e. by means of a lift.

PHILIPE said:

That is true. They really should be moved further down, as trains pull up right to the bottom of the footbridge (i.e. at the Cardiff end of the platform), unless it's an FGW HST or the daily XC Voyager (of which the last carriage sits just in front of the Uppercrust store). This is one of the factors that I admittedly don't particularly like about Newport; it is mainly the artistic design of the footbridge and the fact that it's a relatively small station that catches my eye with it.

PHILIPE said:

The lack of waiting rooms is certainly something I am inclined to agree with; Newport is a busy interchange station for connections with the Welsh Marches and the South West. However, most services (unless it's FGW!) normally connect within each other so it isn't too bad. However, like with Queen Street, I think passengers are allowed to wait in the Uppercrust on platforms 2/3, as a makeshift waiting room.

Is there an elevator to Platform 1/2 at Cardiff Central and to the Cardiff Bay branch Platform at Cardiff Queen Street?

Yes. There is step-free acess to all platforms at Cardiff Central and I believe to all platforms at Queen Street also.

I admit to having a preference for all things HOWL but unfortunately most of the stations were demolished in the 60s when it was expected that the line would close. However there are are still some interesting stations:

Pantyffynon. Still a classic V junction station with a building dating from about 1880 albeit with no passenger waiting facility. Also a gated level crossing, GW signal box and a few semaphores.

Llandovery. Again a lovely building dating from Vale of Towy Railway days (built 1858) which has been taken over by the Heart of Wales Devpt Co and is now open to passengers as an excellent café with newspapers, second hand books and tourist information available. Still a couple of sidings to complete the picture.

Builth Rd building is also a bit special too.....enormous for its location and now decked with old 60s style chocolate and cream station signs. Coming into the station from the road side you have the sense of entering a station much bigger than it really is. The old low level station is now a pub with some great photos of the line from the 50s & 60s.

Llandrindod nice too.....the only staffed station on the line.

Off the HOWL someone also mentioned Whitland which I would agree with. It is a classic example of a station rebuilt in the 50s in a way which would have been unbelievable 10 years later. Sadly run down since the ticket office closed in the late 90s there are calls for "something to be done about it". The local MP has even said that demolition would be preferable to what is there now. I hope it doesn't happen as I think it would be a great shame but fortunately Network Rail are looking to establish some sort of base there. Fingers crossed.

Surprised there are no votes for Conwy or Harlech with their castles adjacent.
Newtown is one of the nicest little stations, still with canopy intact. Pity the restaurant/pub closed.
I changed trains once at Tonfanau on the Cambrian coast line - bleak and remote, but great views out to sea.
Views from the line around Talsarnau across to Portmeirion and towards Snowdon are great too.
Chirk station (also very pretty) is only 500m from the border.
Wrexham Gen has been done up nicely, great cafe. Flint looks a lot better than it did, too.
Penyffordd (WMCQ/GC) is an atmospheric rural spot still with signal box and semaphores.
The old LNWR station (Hope & Penyffordd) in the village is privately preserved but has been given GW semaphores!

One of the advantages of moving to London Midland in 1963 was that the Cambrian avoided the worst of the station vandalism that was the hallmark of the Western Region post Beeching. Caersws and Machynlleth retain their original station buildings built out of the stone taken from Talerddig cutting. Caersws still has its 1897 Dutton signalbox intact albeit taken out of rail use.

I'll second that.......West of Swansea nice buildings at Kidwelly, Ferryside, Clunderwen, Milford and others all demolished. The Pembroke Dock line fared better for some reason with some attractive buildings at Narberth, Tenby and Pembroke Dock still standing. I think Carmarthen is still a fine station with its building dating from 1902. However, it's let down and would be so much better if platform 2, now back in use, had its original building instead of the naff little bus shelter thing!

The Cardiff Valleys REALLY sufferred, however, nearly all replaced by nondescript concrete blocks.....awful.

Just thought of another nice station.......Abergavenny. Original buildings, semaphores. Nice!

I seem to remember that Caersws looked quite cute? I also thought that Pwllheli and its location had a certain appeal - perhaps the view? And how can you not love Gilfach Fargoed!?

I got caught by it not accepting things like Trefforest instead of Treforest...otherwise 20 mins wasn't enough and I don't know the names of the stations on the Cambrian Coast nor Wrexham-Bidston :(

You parked right by the gap in the houses where the original high level platform steps come down from The Great Western pub from my street above. The station sign is next to a stump of concrete where the water tower was. Thanks for the pic!
