Another question for you guys, in terms of references do we know what is asked?

I have been told a former employer is not allowed to go into great depth these days?

The former employer usually just faxes a copy of a statement detailing the duration of employment and maybe a few other nice things too, on headed paper. They certainly will not say anything nasty about you, even if you left on bad terms

I'd get absolutely mint references from my last two managers, would be a right sickener if someone looking at them thought I was only getting such a glowing tribute because I've been with the company for over 20 years...

I have an assessment day for Northern coming up. (Schenker Doncaster). Anyone know if the medical in particular eyesight test, is done at the same time? I only ask as I will need new glasses to satisfy the visual requirements, I have checked them and spoken to my optician, I def need new ones but wont bother if I fail the assessmenets?

Noo Doncaster is purely assessments.

If you pass that expect the medical a few weeks after.

What's the start date?

Hi Chris; no start date yet that I know of. I missed the first assessment due to being on holiday and they allowed me to reschedule; said they were still sending people for assessments but I had missed the June start, they also said they wouldnt take more on until later in the year (Leeds) - so I guess that means should I pass, I would be talent pooled

The medical comes after a conditional offer of employment. Some candidates had their medical 6 or 7 weeks into the classroom based training wold you believe.

Darlington station.

I think there's a course in June starting next week, 1 in July then I think the next is end of September which is the one I'm on.

Very excited now!

Nice one, top effort! plenty of courses going on there, they all for Darlo? Or do Northern amalgamate courses for different depot drivers?

Hi Ive just received an email from Northern for a position at Piccadilly and it says I passed the visual comparison test but due to a change in train crew requirements I will now be considered for a training course later in the year. Has anyone else had something like this and what does this mean? No more jobs at Piccadilly?
Thanks

I assume it means that all available training places have now been filled. It does suggest that there may be some more training positions available later in the year. It sounds like a 'we'll keep your details on file' type of response doesn't it?

My husband received the same e-mail yesterday, saying it will be the September training course. David had passed everything including his medical. I also got the same e-mail in relation to a guard position for Liverpool, so really don't know what is going on.

I received the same email. The original advert stated a June training course, so it is not surprising they have put our applications back.

I'm on the September driver course too. It's all good news your husband has a date set in stone!

I look forward to meeting him!

I dont think its the end of the line as they would say it was or am i just assuming there? I think it may be that they have filled the positions or just dont need people anymore. Im probably just overthing things.

I got the same email, nothing to worry about. Vacancies being pulled due to a change in requirements is common, count yourselves lucky that it happened early in the recruitment process.

It might be Northern have to review some of their recruitment plans. Below is a quote from Bob Crow regarding agreements reached by RMT with Northern Rail. Quoted from the "Northern Rail Strike" thread.

PTR&R Regarding Promotion

The company states that should an internal candidate achieve the recruitment criteria, as long as there is a vacancy, they will be appointed ahead of an external candidate to a role. Should there be more than one successful internal candidate, then the best scoring internal applicant shall be appointed, subject to any satisfactory assessments and medicals that are required for the role. Further, should two internal candidates score the same, then the senior candidate will be appointed. Further, a commitment was given that a feedback mechanism will be put in place to ensure all unsuccessful candidates have the option of receiving developmental guidance on why they did not reach the required standard for appointment to the role applied for.

Guess this means that to get the post if your an external candidate your going to have be near on 100% perfect.

Yup, most jobs as trainee drivers or guards you need to be pretty good to get the job, internals especially SC staff will always have the edge as they have both the experience with the comapnay and on the railway.

I received an email last week to invite me to interview tomorrow, which I read on Friday. My luck in this process dictates that I am currently in Egypt and will not be able to attend, unfortunately there are no alternative dates for interview, gutted doesn't come close.

Aah mate that sucks, don't let it ruin your holiday. So much for the vacancy being withdrawn then.

Hi, I also had the same response. I took it as a positive reply at first but not so sure now. It might be the dreaded "We'll keep your details on file" response!
Anyway, anybody else had the same reply in the past and know it's true meaning?

I had a problem a while ago, got invited to the assessment after quite a long wait (with only 5 days notice) unfortunately had a funeral on that day which I couldn't miss. I explained this in an email but never had a response. Anyway the status on the application was changed to no show at assessment centre which makes it sound like I just didn't bother to turn up. Not heard anything since so presumably that is a black mark against me never to get the opportunity again. Thinking back I still don't know what was the right priority, following a dream, or respect to a loved one..
