Wilson was born in Chesterfield, and the rule that allowed you to play for your parents' nationality was only created in 1970, 3 years before Wilson retired. Like Butts says, a certain Mr. Banks would have kept him out of the England set up, but IIRC he wasn't favoured for Scotland either, they had a long standing keeper and Wilson couldn't topple him.

I think my intention has been misunderstood. I was referring to Bob Wilson playing for Scotland. I never made any reference to his hopes of playing for England.

There was for many years a reluctance by the Scottish FA's selectors to call up "Anglos" - those who played for English Clubs. This would have affected Wilson's career - indeed I think it was Tommy Docherty who swept this nonsense away when he became Scotland manager, and gave Wilson his cap.

There may also have been prejudice against Bob Wilson as an outsider - a qualified schoolteacher who came late to football, and originally played as an amateur.

Chris Woods had the same problem, though he had Shilton ahead of him in the pecking order. To be honest there's plenty of English keepers putting in performances that deserve at least call-ups to the national team. Ruddy at Norwich seems to have got over his injuries, and even our own Alex Smithies has been in outstanding form for the past 15 months. He played (only once I think) for the U-21s, and it wouldn't be the first time a 'keeper from outside the top-flight had been called up... Indeed didn't a Peterborough 'keeper almost go to South Africa?

A quirky little fact about Chris Woods England career, he must be one of the few England players to make his first and his last England appearance against the same country.....anyone know which country?

Chris Woods earned most of his England caps while at Rangers.

He did, though generally only if Shilton was unavailable, no? After the 1990 World Cup, Shilton retired and Woods moved to Sheffield Wednesday, but was never really considered the first choice for England even then.

Joe Hart should be dropped without question, he's always come across as arrogant to me thinking he was untouchable at both club and country level.

He's made mistakes at club and country level, and numerous mistakes at that and clearly has lost his head. Yet people are only just waking up to this fact and silly old boy Roy is going to pick him and pick him, Hart hasn't been good for a long while. I think he's a liability in the upcoming qualifiers, why can't other people be given a chance when this overrated fool keeps getting chance after chance when other England keepers have had their careers ended by one mistake?

I thought Fraser Forster was outstanding against Barca on Tuesday, and kept the score down. Same cant be said for Joe Hart

2 more footballers in the news for all the wrong reasons again today ....

Firstly, Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine has been jailed for 18 months after being convicted of causing actual bodily harm and grevious bodily harm for 2 attacks on fans.

Also, Stephane Sessegnon has been banned from driving for 20 months after being caught drink driving, and fined £7,605 for various insurance offences.

As a Wednesday fan, it shouldn't affect things too much as since we left League One Madine has been largely insignificant. Attacking two people, never mind one of them being a Wednesday fan is absolutely stupid and the club needs to terminate his contract fairly sharpish. Another young player has potentially chucked his career away.

I've won tickets to Wednesday v Ipswich tomorrow, I'm at a gig in Sheffield at 6 anyway and hopefully we'll pick up our first win of the season :(

The problem for Joe Hart is that he initially got over confident, maybe even a bit cocky, and that led to complacency which in turn led to some stupid mistakes and soft goals being conceeded. That's obviously knocked his confidence and now he's at the other end of the scale where he's conceeding stupid goals because of a lack of confidence. A few shrewd people predicted this would happen when he was on top form and they've been proven to be right.

What has happened to Hyde? They seemed to have found a decent level last season, but are somewhat lacking in points this. Background trouble?

Sunderland have just gone 1-0 Up in the match being dubbed on some Facebook football banter pages as a "relegation battle"

Oldham 1-1 Leyton Orient

Good draw for us and we were better team in first half, we probably should been 2-0 at Half time but as the game when on you could tell that Orient would score and they did.

I see Stockport won 4-0 against Worcester and now 15th in Skrill Conference North after they second win or season.

In league two I notice Chesterfield was 3-0 up at Half time but lost 4-3 to Morecambe and Oxford and surprise Mansfield (who lost 4-1 to Hartlepool) both lose too today.

Even Att have fail quite sharp at Hyde as only 402 fans watch Braintree beat Hyde today.

New kid on block at Man Utd as Januzaj have just score his first premiership goal for Man Utd and five mins later he score again which mean Man Utd are winning 2-1 against Sunderland.

Man Utd were lucky! Very lucky!

Well good day for my club Liverpool 3-1 vs Crystal Palace, putting us back at the top of the summit until at least tommorow, although i'm hoping West Brom will do us a favour.

On the Lawro Vs Predictions on BBC Sport, Michael Palin was the opponent and has predicted West Brom to win 8-1.

He has only predicted one correct winner though out of todays games,

Absolutely disgraceful scenes again by some Millwall fans away at Bournemouth. First of all "supporters" trying to run onto the pitch, followed by coins being thrown at players.

Stockport are definitely beginning to get their act together now. Their squad is, in my opinion, the best in the league however for some reason it just hasn't worked for them this season. I'd be surprised if they didn't finish in the top half of the league at least.

You obviously saw my posting last week on the thread comparing the current seasons results of these two clubs.

Indeed, Fort William are well aware that their jealously guarded title of "Worst middle-grade football team in Britain" is under attack by Hyde and have taken steps to consolidate their position by losing 3-1 to a lesser league side, Newton Stewart of the South of Scotland league, in one of the Scottish cup competitions then following it up by losing the next match in the Highland League 6-1 to Brora Rangers. (Matters can be viewed in perspective as yesterday in the next round of the same cup completion, Newton Stewart were defeated 6-0 at home by Culter FC from the SJFA North Superleague).

Fort William FC had a day without a fixture in the Highland League yesterday and rumours are circulating that a closed doors match at Claggan Park was played against the harridans who comprise the lady members of the Fort William Fish-Fryers Association...Reports at half-time say that the Fort William FC side were being "battered"...:D

Your comparison of Fort William and Culter isn't really a great one in all honesty. Culter operate on a playing budget that is far in excess of the one that Fort William operate on and in the last round of the cup Culter beat another Highland League team, Lossiemouth.

In Scotland there are junior clubs who pay their players more than some league clubs pay their players.

Well, Fort William play in the Highland League, which is where four of the last five teams to enter the top senior Scottish league and now currently playing in that senior league came from.

I was making the point that Fort William were defeated by Newton Stewart from the South of Scotland League in a cup competition, but then Newton Stewart were defeated by Culter FC in the next round of that competition.

I would not be so unkind to Fort William as to suggest they have the financial wherewithal to match that of Culter FC. Would you agree that the Highland League is supposed to be of a higher status than the SJFA North Superleague ?

Whilst the Highland League is regarded as being of a higher level than the junior Superleague quite a few of the junior Superleague teams are better than Highland League sides and would easily hold their own in that league.

Because there is no pyramid in Scotland outside of the top 4 leagues it can be hard to compare the other leagues. I mean the Highland League is considered to be the best of the other leagues but a few seasons back Huntly were beaten by Auchinleck Talbot who are a junior side and that wasn't considered a shock.

Altrincham annihilated Hinckley United (not like any other result was really expected). Hinckley United now have the very impressive goal difference of -104

I have shown that posting made some time ago as reference is made to a sad event today.

Hinckley United have been today wound up in the High Court with debts in excess of £200,000. None of the club directors at the court opposed the decision. It is said that Leicestershire police are still investigating certain business irregularities at the club.

I'm assuming this means exclusion from the Southern Premier. What happens to their results, are they all voided or awarded as a 0-0 win to the opposition?
