I received an email from Virgin Trains giving a unique code for £10 off an advance booking on their services when £50 or more is spent in one go. Nothing seems to say it is non-transferable and I will not be needing it so if anybody wants the code, first to PM me gets it :D

Update: taken

Have just tried to book a trip and realised when checking terms and condition that this promotion is valid for Standard only not 1st Class

I understand that they will hold price levels to that of the previous Club 55 offer and this current promotion will run from 1st September to 23rd October. The items to prove entitlement no longer includes the NCTS pass and mention of this specific item is shown within the conditions.

I'm guessing the £50 needs to be on Virgin trains only (or Virgin+Connections)?

Last time I had a similar offer from Virgin, the promotion only applied to Virgin services only. Indeed, the T&Cs states 'selected' journeys.

Alas only two months Sept/October, prices went up last Winter/Spring,same restrictions, thanks for bringing it to our attention Paul

Like last time, it appears booking offices have not had advance notice, I was informed this morning.

In previous years I made weekly use of this promotion to travel on day trips from Caerphilly to West and North Wales leaving by 7am to get a full day out.

I didn't use it last year and doubt I will do this due to the combination of higher fares and the restrictions on weekday travel before 9am . Unfortunately for me I'm not in Wales on Saturdays but even then there were excluded dates last year.

It started off as a great promotion until the "mustn't lose revenue" people apparently became involved !:(

25% off day return tickets for Friday/Saturday/Sunday travel this month for South West Trains.

No railcard discount it seems so railcard holders get bigger discount without the promotion.

Although it seems it's available west of Salisbury (couldn't see anything in T&Cs which makes a change)

Just wanted to point something that I've noticed out. In the East Coast seat sale all the 'normal' fares are way more than normal. So are they lowering the price on some tickets but then increasing the price on others?

Yeah, I'd noticed that the cheaper advances had all but vanished. I thought it might be due to service alterations for the Carlisle diversions, but London tickets are still pretty expensive for the end of November when the diversions are finished.

And the sale was fairly rubbish with very restricted availability.

I'm pinning my faint hopes on Northern coming up with their £10 newspaper voucher offer! (yeah, I know, fat chance....)

CLUB 55 keeps expanding...
To add to the Arriva Trains Wales now to 23 Oct (+8 days return) (on Wales lines + connecting ATW areas + extend to adjacent TOCs)
and TransPennineExpress [TPE only services] from 14 Sep to 15 Nov (+1 month return) reported above

the details of this Autumn's ScotRail are now online - ie seem same as last time but only Oct-Nov (+1 month return) in 2014 rather than Sep-Nov in 2013, ie including ScotRail, Virgin Trains, TransPennine Express & Cross Country in Scotland (+Carlisle/Berwick-upon-Tweed).

Well funnily enough... I saw a tweet by a local newspaper trailing an up coming rail offer which Northern had retweeted...

Thanks for the heads up, that looks promising, I never thought they'd do it again (although it might be something else entirely!)

The mention is on Northern's twitter feed (https://twitter.com/northernrailorg) dated September 5th, and says "Coming soon in the Batley & Birstall News, a fantastic Northern Rail offer, keep watching for more details". The little teases!

I think you get the picture. All Johnston Press newspapers, so likely the same offer as last year. I can't wait!!

Incidentally, none of the newspapers last year were available in Crewe. Ended up going to the only place that I knew I could definitely get one of the participating newspapers: Buxton. Got a funny look when I bought 10 copies.

Yes mate. Usually £10 for an adult. In December 2012 they did it for anyone and they did it in the format similar to that of the Great Escape, where you have to print off a form and take it to a Northern booking office. They haven't done it since which is a shame.

The Northern Offer is available with the Lancashire Evening Post today so I would expect that the usual Johnston Press Local Newspapers will be running with the same offer as in previous years. Happy travelling.

Did you notice the dates you can travel, by any chance?

Here ya go, posted on Twitter earlier

For those about to print it, it's too low quality and blatantly not from a newspaper, but you could try to wangle it with the ticket office. Either way, I think a Crewe-Chathill journey is in order! :D

EDIT: I had a few questions on my Twitter earlier since the Northern site isn't 100% clear. Here's the highlights:
Some of these publications are weekly, so it may be a few days before all publications have the tokens in.
You print off ONE form and stick on it TWO tokens. This form is then valid for FOUR tickets all valid on ONE day. This means all four tickets from this form must be for the same day (so 4 different people). If you want a multi-day journey, you need a form and two tokens PER DAY.
Tokens aren't individually numbered or anything, so you can stockpile a single issue. Last time, I went to Buxton and bought TEN copies of the same issue of the Buxton Advertiser, giving me FIVE days of Northern Rail shenanigans.
The last day the tokens are available is the day before the first day tickets are valid. You can't buy two newspapers AND the ticket for travel that same day. You can buy the tickets in advance though.

It seems these tickets are not affected by Northern's new afternoon peak times, so that might be helpful for some.

Thanks. I think the plan is to return to Newcastle and stay in a hotel. Last year I stayed at Manors, but never made it to Chathill. Worth noting is that I'd need to buy a Crewe to Blackburn ticket as well, as the Northern rangers aren't valid until 08:45. Last year I got the 08:45 (ish) out of Crewe which is why I was too late to get to Chathill.

I phoned the Lancashire Evening Post (01772 254841 Option 3, 3, 5) and brought copies with vouchers for them to send them via post
