Class 458/5

Any news on units heading north for conversion or back South for testing?

504 and 505 saw them from the Up Epsom Road they'd run up from Surbiton way.Caught up with them as they were going into the depot at Wimbledon @ 1640.Also noticed a DMOS on a low loader @ Wimbledon at the same time.

I passed 2 blue SWT coaches on the M25 last night in convoy. So it wasn't just the DMSO.

And I spotted another 458/5 coach being loaded on a lorry this afternoon. Looks like the whole unit may be off for attention somewhere then.

And I spotted another 458/5 coach being loaded on a lorry this afternoon. Looks like the whole unit may be off for attention somewhere then.

I would suspect that the fire has damaged the BCW so that means without the BCW being complete, you don't get a brake release, so it would be difficult to tow it as technically it would be a swinger & you'd just have brake force from the loco.

So the only solution would be to uncouple all of the coaches & transport them singly via road.

Ah, so during the rail moves, the units is providing braking force? I suppose it'd have to be, as I suspect the 2 barrier wagons and the loco would leave the train a bit short. Hadn't actually thought about that until you posted

Need the whole unit to test it. No point repairing a major electrical fault and then not testing it thoroughly as a unit.

Last night the 4.36 from Guildford was a 450. Perhaps that was a one off, seeing as other weeks it's returned to being a 455. I hope not, as I found the toilets on board useful last night.

Last coach up yesterday was 67601.

Need the whole unit to test it. No point repairing a major electrical fault and then not testing it thoroughly as a unit.

Plus when it's fixed they can transport it by rail.

Yes it had. Was paired with 503 for a few days. Then both disappeared for a little while

Managed to get my first ex 458/0 unit today in 458520 (with 458534). Kept thinking it was a station behind itself (ie arriving at Queenstown road with "this is Clapham junction")

Seats are not as nice as the ex 460 units but they are better, and good to see the old first class seats remaining.

Thanks. I work in an office just north of Bracknell station next to the railway line and just saw them go past quick while eating my lunch on some grass area nearby.

I saw them from my office on the South side of Bracknell but am too far away to see the numbers. The variety on this line of late has been broad, with 458/0s, 450s and 455s all on service diagrams, and then 458/5s on test as well.

There is an off peak ECS diagram in the system most weekdays which makes three trips to Reading and back and is being used for 458/5 testing. They make a striking sight as they go past, especially the middle day ones when the lovely sun we have had this week reflects off of the polished blue bodysides.

Still crowded but generally (based on my limited snapshot view) everyone seems to get on at Putney - which isn't the case with a Desiro. Much more pleasent to travel on when they are crowded due to the 2+2 seating.

BIG difference. A 450 is has pretty much no seating after Staines, but a 458/5 normly still has seats by Whitton (and some days Twickenham).

There is no crush, no shouting at people to move down and I can get off at Vauxhall without having to squeeze through people. A 450 people generally have to step out after Richmond to let people off.

A 450 is a great train but not quite up to this route at rush hour any more.

Not sure it's the number of seats that makes such a difference, given that a 450 and a 5458/5 have virtually the same number of seats. It's the amount of standing and circulation space that makes the difference.

As my user name suggests, I board at Wandsworth Town. The 458/5s (when they turn up in pairs) make a HUGE difference. Hopefully the days of being left on the platform in the rain at 0815 will soon be over for good!
