The platforms at Waterloo East and New Cross are literally just A, B, C and D rather than 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Is there any reason for it at New Cross? I get Waterloo East having platforms with a different numbering scheme to nearby Waterloo because it avoids confusion but I can't think of anything off the top of my head why you'd need to do it at New Cross and as go south of the river less often than a black cab driver then my local knowledge is lacking too.

To avoid any potential confusion between New Cross and New Cross Gate

On the subject of popular music:

  • XTC opened their song 'The Meeting Place' with Swindon works' hooter;
  • Showaddywaddy's 1977 album called 'Red Star', was presented as a brown paper parcel supposedly sent from St Pancras to Leicester, complete with British Railways labels, etc.

Ormskirk and Kirkby are the only two stations I can think of where two TOCs meet head on at a station.

It's been mentioned before, but Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine recorded '24 Minutes From Tulse Hill' which starts with a platform announcement, and The Pet Shop Boys song 'Two Divided By Zero' also contains one.

Edinburgh (platforms 1/20, 2/19, 8a/8b and/or 9a/9b) will have undoubtedly seen this as well.

The difference being that you cannot run through Ormskirk and Kirkby. Both trains terminate at buffer stops and you have to walk between the two trains to continue your journey.

Well, yes, but the poster wasn't that specific.

What non-terminal station has the most platforms? Clapham Junction has 17. Reading has 15. I would not count London bridge, as though it has through lines, some of the station is a terminus.

"Ffarwel I Stesion Strata" - Tecwyn Ifan

Translates as "Farewell to Strata [Florida] Station", not the hardest translation in the world!

:D

"Ar y tren I Afon Wen" - Bryn Fon

Translates as "On the train to Afon Wen"

As indeed is Reading!

Clapham Junction has two terminus platforms for the Overground...

If you include the LU and overground stations Acton has 6 stations. does anywhere have more - other than of course the London termini ?

There are 7 aren't there which include the name Acton - Acton Town, Central, Main Line, North Acton, East, South and West.

And 5 including the name Ealing - North, South & West Ealing, Ealing Broadway, Ealing Common

As ever this will descend into a pointless argument about borders and boundaries, but there are a surprisingly high number of stations in North West London with Harrow in their name:

Harrow on the Hill
North Harrow
South Harrow
West Harrow
Harrow and Wealdstone
Sudbury Hill Harrow
Sudbury and Harrow Road

By my count there are 34 heavy rail stations within the city limits of Birmingham, and that is if we are being strict with the definition of the limits too (ie, no Birmingham International, Water Orton, The Hawthorns, Olton or any other station which is mere yards outside of the city).

This one's a bit difficult due to the inconsistency of platform numbering.
At some places like TM and Waverley, long through platforms have a separate number for each end. Some places like Leeds and New St have A, B, C suffixes etc to split long platforms or in some cases even for bays set into the side of long platforms.

Even if you exclude the 15 subway stations, Glasgow is bound to beat that - it has the largest suburban rail network outwith London.

Of the 373 fleet, power cars 3001/3002 are the odd ones out.
Why's that? This is extreme trivia folks!

While we're on points of the compass, there used to be a station sign that said
Network South East
North London Line
Welcome to West Hampstead

Are there any stations other than Llanelli which have a level crossing at each end?

Had this a few months ago. Remember Rye and Harwich International getting a mention.

Bangor has tunnels at either end. And is a terminating station. And is a monolingual station name in Wales.

Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Snow Hill have tunnels at either end of the platforms too. I wonder how many other non-terminal stations around the country can only be accessed by trains via a tunnel?
