Already various speed restrictions and issues in place, with much of Northern England facing strong winds and heavy rain over the next 48 hours.

The way we're going, we will run out of the alphabet soon. It's just a bit of wind.

There's problems all over the North of England - whether it's all weather related I'm not sure - Thirsk earlier, Berwick, Workington (that's historical landslip, granted), 30 hours of prolonged rain in Cumbria per Met Office, speed restrictions I've read but can't remember where, etc, etc.

Tree down at Bangor earlier too.

If the stated 30 hours rainfall in Cumbria leads to a repeat of the floods in the Workington/Cockermouth hinterland, will the plans for the temporary station of Workington North be dusted off?

I still remember what these valley floods can be like, having fortunately been not too far away from Boscastle when that settlement was devastated.

It was supposed to be quite bad last night - I was driving over the Pennines just after 1am this morning, coming home from our work Christmas do, and whilst it was a bit breezy in places (over Ripponden on the M62) I have known it be far worse

.

I very much doubt it unless the flooding renders the rebuilt adjacent road bridge unusable like it was previously when part of it got washed away by the river, very few if any trains or replacement busses seem to be running right now in this area due to the flooding

Major incident declared in Cumbria by police and partner agencies, with another 14-18 hours of rain still to come.

Think the WCML and more local routes could be qiite seriously damaged

Alot of disruption on the Ayrshire lines. No trains to Largs or Ardrossan due to high seas affecting the OHLE. There was also a 40mph emergency speed restriction between Paisley and Glengarnock due to fears of a Landslide. Hearing now that there is heavy flooding affecting the line. All I can say is I'm glad I'm on leave for 10 days now.

I feel sorry for any stranded passengers and for the guys and girls who will be out in terrible conditions trying to patch things up for us. Sounds bad out there. Stay safe!

I'm really hoping things get better by Wednesday as I'm booked to travel on the 12:30 VT service from London Euston - Glasgow :(

Some of the pictures of Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales look horrendous - as people say it's already falling on saturated ground which isn't making things any easier.

I saw footage from Hexham and Corbridge on Look North; the Tyne burst its banks; it seemed bad and my first thought was would the line be affected (as the line is low near Hexham/Corbridge)?

Desmond messed up my plans today. Had planned to do diverts via Carlisle. Back down the settle to Leeds, got as far as York and gave up around 1000. I believe there were a few charters curtailed by the weather as well.

My brother in law is stranded in Keswick, entire town is cut off. Fields where he lives nearer to Penrith are now lakes.

no trains north of Preston from what I can tell. Two weekends in a row.

Manchester airport still working, but an Emirates a380 just aborted landing and flew directly over our neighbour's front garden according to fr24.
