I know we've had a few Level Crossing threads recently, but this is footage of an incident which seems to have occurred recently, which shows a vehicle getting stuck inside the barriers. Luckily a member of staff was paying attention to the CCTV/video at the crossing!.

Luck has nothing to do with it, they were doing what they were supposed to do. Unlike the motorist, it must be said!

Driver needs to abide by the Highway Code!
And at no risk as the crossing was controlled by a signaller, as can be seen by the gates rising again.

I swear people must think the yellow hatching at level crossings (and elsewhere) is there just to make the road look a bit prettier...

Noticed the warning/stop lights went off when the barriers were raised. A cyclist chanced his arm but other motorists were sensible enough to stay put. Should there be a facility to raise the barriers without cancelling the lights?

Good!!
Hopefully they won't do it a second time!

I doubt it, the problem is that many drivers refuse to admit to an error of judgement, but find something/someone to blame as in

"I rolled my car, it is the council's fault for not gritting the roads"

You must always leave the traintracks free. In the Netherlands the barriers are actived around 30 a 40 seconds before the train crosses the road. And sometimes there are no barriers at all. No time to stop in time.

Probably better to do a full cycle - amber then reds, because some drivers might move off as soon as the barrier raises, without realising the lights are still flashing.

Are you sure about that? I'm not sure that is the message that needs to be given by signallers 'its at no risk' because guess what will happen next time you lower the barriers? There is always a risk, especially when humans are involved.

I get what you are saying but saying 'at no risk' just creates a culture of 'its ok to do it then' when the reality isn't quite that. We don't want drivers using LCs thinking its safe as the signaller with deal with it and its their problem because one day someone will try it on a AHB.

According to the facebook link "He jumped out of his cab to move the cones outside tesco to park there and left the back of the lorry hanging in the level crossing doh ........."
Impressive, not just driving onto crossings but now stopping on them!

Apart from the lorry driver stopping on the crossing, in the news item, the eyewitness said he had been stuck on the crossing several times when a lorry ahead was stopped. Another box junction ignorer, then, and one who clearly hasn't learned from his first supposedly scary experience!

Hi.
What amazes me is the nanny state attitude in this country.
In many foreign countries, including EU countries, their level crossings are basically our AHBs but without the endless fencing, cattle grid, cameras etc.

It seems to me, other countries attitude is "if you get hit by a train then tough! You shouldnt be there or wander onto the tracks where theres no fence".
In this country, our nanny state attitude is "fence everything, gate everything, do everything to stop idiots and they will still get onto the tracks and sue NR when it happens".

Lets face it, its only a matter of time before every tram line in this country will have a fence round it! Im surprised it hasnt already happened.

...steps down from soapbox.

Well I think we have been round this loop too many times on this forum. The fact is that as a result of what you state, our railways are safer than most others in Europe. Is that a bad thing?

In France, the barriers are designed to break easily if a driver gets trapped and drives through them. Strikes me as a rather good solution as these situations will always happen sadly.
There's often a few spare barrier nearby too if they get broken.

When people get killed on the railway, regardless of whether or not they should be there, and regardless of what other countries do, it tends to make a mess, causes major disruption and results in grieving relatives and friends, so doing what is practical to minimise the risk of it happening, along with all the associated negative side effects, is a reasonable thing to do, is it not?

We don't have the death penalty in the UK, so implying that someone deserves to die because they trespass in a hazardous place is over the top.

Everything you say is true of the UK as well.

I suggest you look to your history.
This is nothing to do with the "nanny state" but the fact that nearly all the Railway Acts insisted that the railway was "enclosed". To change that to needing no fencing would mean all the Acts would need to be changed, and I doubt any Government would find the time to do it.
Trams have a totally different enactment so the comparison is incorrect.

Hi.

Yeah, theyre safer, but Network Rail owns more fencing than rails!

See above!

Hi.
Im not reffering to the nanny state insisting that we need fencing everywhere.

How many trainspotters reading this have stood against a perfectly good 4ft fence against a railway or on a perfectly good low level bridge only to find next time they return, the fence is a 9ft palaside fence and the bridge is so high you cannot see over it!

The items havent been replaced because they aint no good anymore, its because some do-gooder has pointed out that they are easy target for trespass.

Thats my opinion anyway, anyone else can have theirs.

If there's electrification involved (and quite often there is) then there is a *very* good reason for it.

And even where it isn't - 300 suicides last year tells me that people and trains are coming together way too often.

I'm sorry, but you can't present conjecture as facts, then call it opinion. It's one or the other.
