Hail All! <D
Just thought I'd start a new thread for questions whose answers may not be what they would at first seem. Obviously, the title of this thread is the biggest clue as to it's purpose, but I'll also add that this'll play out a bit like Q.I, for those who know the programme. 8)

Anyhow, here's the first question to start:...
Q: If it takes me an hour to drive from London to Basingstoke at 60mph, how long would the same journey take me at 120mph? ;)

Farewell... <D

As it's supposedly a trick question - then surely that depends on whether you go the same route, get stuck in traffic, get pulled over for speeding, etc. You've also got the point that at least two points in your journey you have to be travelling less than 60mph (starting & stopping). Or have I missed the point? <D

I am thinking its something like 60 minutes because you have to drive back to London to do the journey again.
Or 24 h 30 m as you wont be doing it to tomorrow.

Mojo's pretty much got the general idea. Although I wasn't factoring in accelleration, decelleration and delays, 30 minutes is definitely not correct. In fact, one valid answer (And my normal one in this case) could be:
At least three hours, once I have been stopped and charged by the Police for driving at almost double the motorway speed limit and had six points added to my licence!:lol:

Anyhow...This isn't a sequential thread (If ye have a trick question, feel free to post it at any time and see if it foxes people!) and there's no "turn-taking" needed here. Just to keep your brains warm though, have a go at this one: 8)

Q: If it takes me an hour to cut down a tree with an 80cm long saw, how long will it take me to cut down an identical tree using a saw that is 140cm long? ;)

About the same time as the tree is the same size;)

[Neck snaps from the speed at which that answer arrived!]
Matt's pretty much hit it right...Even though the second saw is longer, it wouldn't affect the time it takes ye to cut down a tree of the same size by more than a few seconds. :D

Anyhow...I'm all dried up on questions at the moment as I wasn't expecting them to be solved that quick. Anyone else got a good few to post? 8)

Q: Another day in the office and at 9am it is my turn to get the drinks in for my colleagues from the free vending machines. In total I get 4 drinks and it takes me 120 seconds. At 3pm I get the drinks in again but this time I am asked to get 6 drinks. Does it take me more or less time when I get the drinks in at 3pm?

I'd say that it'd take ye less time to collect the drinks at 15:00 hours, either because someone has filled up the Coffee urn at some point during the day (Meaning that ye'd draw each drink in only a few seconds), or because ye all knocked off of work early and went to a pub or bar where beverages are served in bottles. :D

Either way...I get the distinct impression that a crucial part of your riddle is that ye didn't obtain your drinks from the same place on both occasions. 8)

On both occasions I go to the same location, automatic vending machines in the office. Being automatic vending machines operational during the day, there is no time required to wait for warming up.

Hmmm...And there was me reading between the lines too much, and giving no thought to the technical aspects of the question - Which is very unusual for me, admittedly...

Anyhow, here's another fairly easy one that I just Googled up. 8)

Q: How many months in the year have 28 days? ;)

My question hasn't been answered ;)

To yours (a spolier) = all twelve have 28 days!

Ahh, sorry...I thought ye'd accepted my answer as partially correct! :D

I'm still going to stick with less time though as - Like ye suggested in thy hint above - Ye'd have to wait by the machine for a good 60-110 seconds for the water in the machine to boil before it could despense thy drinks first thing in the morning (Where ye'd be one of the first to use the machine that day) whereas other people using it during the day would keep the water in the tank boiling at the right temperature, meaning that the machine would dispense six drinks - On demand - With no waiting for water to boil beforehand! 8)

all twelve have 28 days!
Correct...But it was an easy one grabbed off of a random quiz site! :D

Q: It's a very windy day and a Rooster lays an egg on the roof of the hutch. In which direction will the egg roll? :)

It would take less (obviously, being a trick question) but that's not why!

Roosters don't lay eggs so there is no egg to roll.

Less time, because by 3pm everyone is in skive mode so you'll have a couple of volunteers to help carry back the drinks rather than having to make two trips yourself like you did at 9am.

Q: If it takes 3 men 2 hours to dig a hole, how long will it take 1 man to dig half a hole?

You can't exactly get "Half a hole" can you? ;) The question makes no sense.

Where was the man when he fell off the cliff?

The times in my question are irrelevant, for all it matters it could be two separate occasions at any time during the day. I've not included any time in travelling to the machine or waiting for it to heat up (this isn't required). I also have a tray so don't have to make multiple trips ;)

More time I think... It takes 30 seconds to get a drink in the first instance, leading to 30*4=120

So using the same timings for the third time with six drinks 30*6=180

It should be right, but this is a trick questions thread, so it's wrong. It's been established that when I'm getting more drinks it's quicker, but why?

Hail All! <D
Well...I'm already glad that I started this thread - We've got some very interesting problem-solving approaches coming up already! 8)
Roosters don't lay eggs so there is no egg to roll.
Correct! As Roosters are male Chickens, they can't lay eggs at all - Unless they've become the victims of a rather sick GMO experiment! :)
If the Chicken in question had specifically been a Hen, then there would've been a nice egg to make an Omlette with!

Q: If it takes 3 men 2 hours to dig a hole, how long will it take 1 man to dig half a hole?
Making the assumption that "half a hole" is a hole that is 50% the size of the original, then it would take one man about three hours to dig it. However - This being a trick questions thread - My answer is automatically incorrect. :D

So what I'll suggest insted is that it takes this one man one hour to dig the hole...As he is doing the work using a JCB, whereas the other crew of three were all using manual shovels! 8)

Alternatively, it takes the one man no time at all...The hole has already been dug by the crew of three people mentioned in the original question! :D

Where was the man when he fell off the cliff?
Either:...
  1. He'd have started off at the top of the cliff dangerously close to the edge, and finished up at the bottom - Splattered all over the earth in a most horrific, satisfying manner! <D or...
  2. The man in question is gay, and Cliff is his boyfriend/husband. After falling off, he ended up back on the bed lying next to Cliff!

The times in my question are irrelevant, for all it matters it could be two separate occasions at any time during the day. I've not included any time in travelling to the machine or waiting for it to heat up (this isn't required). I also have a tray so don't have to make multiple trips ;)
I'm near enough completely foxed by this one, although I bet I'll be kicking myself at my stupidity when the answer is finally revealed! :D

Just to have another hack at it:
The crux of the riddle could be in the kind of drinks that ye are obtaining, and what each person requests... ;)
Say that when ye started the day, ye went to the machine and got a black coffee, a white tea, a hot chocolate and a cup of tomato soup. Each drink would've required a seperate instance of operating the machine (Inserting your KlixKey, selecting required drink, waiting for drink to be prepared, and taking said drink) which would be 30 seconds per drink.
However...When ye go to the machine later in the day, the requested drinks are two cups of white coffee and four cups of plain water. The machine - Being capable of accepting requests for multiple drinks of the same type at once - Would make the two cups of coffee in about 40 seconds, and four cups of tapwater would be three seconds apiece - A total time of 52 seconds to obtain six drinks! 8)

Hurrah, you've got it! Indeed in the morning I was asked for four hot drinks, which all come from the same machine. You have also noticed that I said there were vending machines. When I went back for the afternoon three people asked for a hot drink and three people wanted a cold water. As they are two separate vending machines I could be "making" two drinks at the same time.

Another variant could be that people just asked for different drinks, and some drinks (eg: cappuccino) take longer than others (eg: hot water).

Never heard that second answer before

Your first one does not answer the question, however, as you have not told me where he was at the precise moment he fell off the cliff ;)

No wai? I didn't think I was ever going to get close to solving that one!:D

Never heard that second answer before
It came to me just after a cigarette break because I live next door to a gay couple, and it had also occurred to me that "Cliff" is a common male name...Hence the rather unusual answer! :)

Aside from suggesting that he might've been in zero-gravity when he fell off the cliff, I can't think of any other possible solutions. I'll keep crunching away at the problem, though! 8)
