This may seem an odd topic but what are the rules about watching adult material on trains, obviously the main thing would be things of a sexual nature but also 18 rated movies and occasionally but very rarely 18 rated video games. Also not as extreme but seen by some as inappropriate reading erotic fiction such as Fifty Shades of Grey.

I only ask because given that today most people have a smart phone and it seems to be a growing problem that passengers of both genders think its ok to watch, play or read this type of material on board trains.

I personally find it quite rude to do on trains but obviously people will do it anyway.

What do everyone else thing about people with inappropriate material on the train?

Probably trying to get a reaction as I can't see what anyone would get from watching that sort of thing on a train, unless they're a sex pest

I don't mind people reading or watching 'Adult Material' because it's not much to do with me, and I don't want to come across as some busybody. But they should keep it to themselves and not use it to disturb others. They should show consideration.

As long as they're not watching porn with kids able to view it (which would be illegal), live and let live; it's NOYFB. :)

Another one seem to come across now is people who play explicit music on train by the dreadful rappers from Compton who manage to get yobs to buy sorry pirate their so called "rap music" which is just a load of swear words on full blast so everyone can hear it rather like the people who had boomboxes in the 70s-80s.

Would be interesting to see the some of the railway WIFI filter reports to see the kind of websites that people have been prevented from accessing on the train.

Which law would it be breaking?

I suspect someone watching Game of Thrones may raise some eyebrows, would they be a sex pest?

There are some pretty graphic mainstream films and TV shows that many would consider to be 'bad'. I'm not sure why anyone reading 50 shades of grey would be "inappropriate" though.

As others have said. Let a bit of common prevail. I can`t see why anyone would want to watch this on a train but provided they are the only ones viewing then it`s up to them.

So what if someone is reading or watching porn. As long as they aren't disturbing others what's it got to do with anybody else?

In the olden days, there was a celebrity who claimed that he would sit and read "Penthouse" on the train as nobody disturbed him when he did.

It's a hopeless thing to Google though as either it returns Penthouse Apartments in Reading or images that I don't really want to view on the train.

This seems to be one of those things that *should* be breaking a law, but I'm struggling to figure out exactly what it would be. Computer Misuse Act possibly?

Posed upthread - Sexual Offences Act 2003 s12.

I was on a train once and a man sat opposite me was watching something on his tablet. He stood up to get something from the overhead and accidentally yanked his headphones out the tablet.

The entire carriage was adorned with the noise of a lady. She must have been celebrating something because she was saying yes a lot.

If I remember correctly its not an offence to be nude in public unless one causes fear, alarm or distress under the Public Order Act, 1986 and I think the same would apply here that if watching adult material was causing fear alarm or distress to other passengers that that person has committed an offence.

I think as well that its a breach of the Obscene Publications Act, 1959 but I am not sure which part.

One that I seem to have seen a few times over the past few weeks is people watching the Channel 4 programme Naked Attraction.

Indeed it was - don't know how I missed that post.

Though, that does require it to be deliberate "...for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification, he intentionally causes..."

As long as its not out loud, who's it bothering? I've watched Jackass a fair few times on my iPad. And once a load of drunks next to me thought it was the best thing ever. So I don't particularly care haha

People traveling to stag and hen nights on trains can get a bit inappropriate at certain times, Hen Nights are the wore of the two I would say as many of them seem to carry blow up bits of male anatomy with them.

Regarding passengers watching/looking at inappropriate things it used to just be male passengers but I have seen a significant and growing number of female passengers who I have had concerns with the things they are looking at in recent years.

Problem is its reality television that has a shock value which does two things first is that draws in viewers with the forbidden fruit effect where people feel naughty for watching it. Secondly commercial broadcasters love reality television as it means that they can produce content without having to pay presenters, actors or writers.

Oh yeah I get why they do it. Though as someone who loves Jackass I'm probably not one to talk too much about trash tv haha!

Sexbox? Is that the new microsoft games console?

On a serious note, I remember that trashy programme too. What would your family think of you if you had coitus in a box on live(?) TV?

Just looking at the bylaws and I would say watching adult material would breach two parts of Section 6 (unacceptable behavior).

(2) No person shall behave in a disorderly, indecent or offensive manner on the
railway

(8) No person shall molest or wilfully interfere with the comfort or convenience of
any person on the railway.

How is it unacceptable? If they try to conceal it from other passengers and don't knock one out then I fail to see how this is unacceptable behavior. How is it different to watching the shagging scenes in Game of thrones?

I always keep a copy of playboy handy, to put around the outside of my Modern Railways when reading the latter on the train. Don't want to be embarrassed.

Haha that did make me laugh. I really a hope a guard comes along and does the whole "Sir, we've received complaints so I'm just gonna have to take this", only to whip away the Playboy and reveal Modern Railways to everyone
