It's even worse if you're heading to the Southside, as you either have to walk half of Prices Street away from where you're going, or climb up Fleshmarket Close/Cockburn street, which isn't a walk in the park even for the able bodied! A lift into North Bridge would do wonders!

To the left of Fleshmarket Close and the Scotsman steps is an entrance to the Carlton Hotel. Straight up in the lift and out the door to North Bridge :D

Now it's a Hilton they may be a bit more security alert though.

Passive aggressive much?

I am in fact visually impaired (and recently had a full thickness corneal transplant in one eye and am waiting for a transplant in the other eye), god forbid I make typos.

I had in fact spelt it correctly in one place and incorrectly in another place in the same paragraph. I relied on the typing suggestions and it was wrong.

How about adding something to the discussion on accessibility instead of being a pedantic?

This rears its head every couple of months. I gather Waverley was the last UK major station with cars allowed access to the concourse, but it was taken away after an accident at the station.

That accident happened on Waverley Bridge after the station had been closed to cars but still had taxi access with barriers at the top of the ramps.

I had a second breakfast there before catching my train last week and was quite impressed with the interior. Nice to have departure boards displayed too. The roof-light made for a very attractive walk in (on a sunny day!) and the service time for the breakfast wrap was fine. I recognise that Wspoons have to vary their prices with the cost of the site, so paying more on a station (& especially at Waverley) than in some semi-rural backwater isn't so surprising. By the same token, food costs more than the average on and near the Blackpool sea-front. Shall probably build it in to future travel plans.

I'd imagine it's better than the offering of the The Nor Loch Bar (which isn't too difficult, considering what a rip off it is at the moment!)

I do apologise if that came across as rather strong. However the Waverley seems to be the most misspelled station in the UK. It's not as if people get St. Pancreas wrong is it.

God forbid I make typos.

We all make typos from time to time. Again no offence intended.

Yes, it could be argued that if vehicular access had been maintained then that accident would never have happened.

AFAIAA the accident occurred when a car reversed out after being stopped by the barrier.

There is a gentler route from memory. If you come out of the Market Street entrance to Waverley, Walk along Jeffrey Street as far as Jurys Inn. Then go through the Marble "arch" in the middle of Jury's Inn. This takes you to a fairly easy negotiated close to the High Street.

Chill out.

Speaking of pedantry, I must admit that I'm not too keen on some of the staff here. Last time I was there, some were a bit jobsworthy and contradictory at times. I also had one trying to explain to me that Edinburgh Waverley's policy on rail enthusiatst is different to Birmingham New Street's because New Street is managed by Virgin trains East coast.

Also what's with the stupid fence that separates platforms 10 and 11? I get that it's for revenue protection but it's hard to enforce the restrictions on movement between the two platforms.

Does the fence completely block off the platforms now?

When I was there a while ago, there was a sign on one sign saying not to pass that point, but not on the other side which I came from!

The barrier staff are okay as far as I'm concerned, but I don't demand much of them. Ticket won't go through. Beep. Show ticket. There ye go pal. Thanks very much.

I've never had anything other than spot on service from the main ticket office, but look out if you're foreign, and by that I mean you weren't brought up within 20 miles of Edinburgh. Only joking, but some of the conversations with people whose English is limited, or even who are English, can be hilarious to overhear.

Still no sign of work starting on the new platforms.

On a brighter note I see that the bad pub (not the Weatherspoons on Waverley Bridge but the one in the central hall) is shut for a refurb. Maybe competition has given them a fright.

I got moaned at by some loser for going round the gap but as you say, there isn't a sign telling you not to go round the fence on platform 10, only on platform 11.

The station staff jobsworthyness is IMO real. I have also personally had a number of other staff related issues which I woant go into here but anyone with a real interested please PM

I had one come over to me, trying to get me to sign in and was moaning about me going round the fence. However I stated that you didn't have to sign in as that is only a guideline and that we could access the platforms because we had tickets. He jogged on after that. Then there was the woman who cited security concerns and sid that they didn't know what I was photographing (trains maybe?)

.

One member of barrier staff let me through with an xc explorer without an issue, but later in the day some of his colleagues refused to accept it and tried to get us to sign in. The moody sods at this station didn't give a great first impresssion of Scotland but I know that they aren't all like that because some members of staff let me pass through the barriers to take pictures back in 2014.

Has work started on Platforms 5 or 6 yet?
Not as far as I could see earlier today, although I walked round the other side of the central building, so only caught a glimpse of the area. Definitely nothing at the end of last week.

I pass through every day on my way to Haymarket and there is no sign of work starting yet. I read in the plans submitted that the waste recycling and compactors that currently sit at the moto bay ramps, on the soon to be Platform 5 & 6 will be relocated to under and around the escalators and elevator at platform 19. So this should indicate when the work is about to start.

I noticed today that the were erecting a wooden fence like barrier around what would be the new platform 5 at the side that is next to platform 4. Not sure if it will be the start of work to the platforms or not, as it doesn't yet run the full length of the intended platforms, stopping short of the existing fence between them and platform 4. I did notice a sign that had "Carillion" as a heading so they may be doing the work.

Any advice on what this may be would be appreciated.

Time to log off when you read puns like these.

I'm passing through Waverley tomorrow so I'll see if I can get to the root of things then.

Greater manchester.
I was in Waverley station two weeks ago and I was told it had been refurbished. When I got to the bottom of the long stairs I was met with confusion and an old looking station needing some money spent on it. I have used many mainline rail stations in the Uk and this one has to be the most confusing station to navigate, My train was late so I took a wonder around to see the destination boards. My train to Manchester was due in platform 7 so off I went and waited and waited, then it was platform 10 Where's that? I asked a transport policeman who pointed over the tracks .The ticket office area with the bars and shops are nice but the platforms, lighting and the signage need Improving, I much prefer Glasgow central.

You should've seen it 15 years ago...

The trick with the platform numbering is that it goes in a full circle clockwise from the north east corner closest to Calton Road. Once you've cracked that then it's (nearly) easy enough to find your way around.

I don't think it's that bad to be honest, it's almost unrecognisable now compared to when I first started working there twenty years ago.

It's not like other mainline stations as it's not been turned into a shopping centre.
