I still have nightmares about pyscometrics.

The whole day is designed to stress you out, use the practice material and get a good nights sleep the night before. Dont dwell on it too much before hand it will make it seem worse than it really is. The idea isnt to finish the sections but to get as far as possible and as accurately as possible.

Good luck with the tests.
Gizmogle, if you havent heard in another week, a phone call to HR wont do any harm. Its possible they havent been able to get a test date yet.

First class wont exist on the 180 either :)

Congratualtions on passing the pyscometrics, you are one step nearer but not out of the woods yet. Next step is the medical which if you are to go on a course will be arranged a couple of weeks prior to the starting date. Please remember your pyscometric certificate lasts 1yr - Good luck with your progression in the stages!!

I think you'll find the psycometric now lasts 5 years, changed a couple of years ago

That's the unfortunate part of life job hunting Minty.

I know I can do the railway jobs (because I do do them, on a regular basis), but I don't necessarily get the offers because my CV doesn't have the right customer service experience and retail sales etc and such junk.

Just keep plugging away - you're in the door, it'll just take a bit of work to climb the ladder.

Railway recruitment these days is entirely about dotting the i and crossing the t and making sure you conform to the right stereotype.

Don't worry yourself about it.

Horray, I have a Medical.
I reckon that if you pass the medical the job is yours. Don't quote me on this but from what others have told me; the medicals cost a couple of hundred pounds, so only those who are to be offered a job are put forward.

Let's hope so anyway!

The training is the worst part. As soon as that is out of way, being a Conductor is the easiest job in the world! I've been on three years and I've not looked back. Best thing I've ever done.

The TOC's take into account 1 in 4 will fail the medical and account for that statistic

As far as I'm aware: (I know you didn't ask me, but I'm a quick answer!)
Blood test, urine test, colour blindness test, hearing test.

The one I did with South West Trains a few months back consisted of:-

o Colourblindness (Ishihara test plates)
o Go through any medication you're taking
o Eyesight test (look at some slides through a viewfinder thingie with different sized letters and numbers on them)
o Hearing test (put into a booth for seven minutes and press a button when you hear various 'beep' sounds)
o Weight and height measurements (to work out your Body Mass Index -should be less than 33 but the doctor can apparently use discretion with anyone over)
o Urinate into a container in order to test for illegal drugs and alcohol (the doctor also stuck some test strips in it for something or other). This is why it's important you declare any medication no matter how insignificant it might seem as some perfectly innocent medications can show up as illegal drugs!
o Blood pressure test (forgot about that one - thanks Giz!)

We didn't have a blood test, but I guess Northern Rail (who Chaz took his with) may be different.

Yeah, not sure why I mentioned blood test there actually. I meant blood pressure test.

Coxster has pretty much summed it up. Just a few extra tests to test you body movement, hips, touching toes etc.

Hello all. New guy here

I also have a medical for Northern rail on the 8th. I think im more nervous about it than the tests or interview! I think its worse because youve got so far, would be a total bitch to fall at the final hurdle!!

Aaaahhh. The waiting is killing me

Just you wait until the end of the medical when they tell you that you've passed all of the on-site tests, except the drugs/alcohol as they need to be sent away for analysis. You know full well that there is nothing in your system, but you're still nervous right up until the results get through and you hear back from the company. Only then do you start to relax :p

Chaz: Got any updates on your progress, or are you still waiting to hear back?

Don't be worred about the medical. As long as you don't do drugs, or drink too much alcohol the nights previously, you should be fine. All I really had to do otherwise, was a hearing test and the colourblindness test. I had mine in BUPA, don't know if it will be the same sort of structure for Northern, although im guessing its going to be the same, seeing as its industry standard!

PTS Next for me :D
