Radio Stations: Which one(s) do you listen to?

I only tend to listen to the radio whilst in the car/van/truck/tourbus the latter tends to not be my choice, but i tend to flick between :

Radio 4
Radio 4 Extra
Radio 6 Music

4 Extra tends to be my choice by default but a few shows are repeated twice in a day and i can often find myself listening to the same thing so end up turning it over or putting a CD / MP3 based thing on.

I deal with music day in day out with my job so sometimes i usually prefer something that is mostly talking, or often sit with it switched off altogether at night after a show.

That morning I was listening to the BBC World Service and, about 1.30 a.m. BST the news came through of a report of a car crash involving Princess Di in Paris, but it couldn't be substantiated. My immediate feeling was that they wouldn't be speculating without being pretty sure it had happened, and within about half an hour the shock news of her death had come through.

Ah yes, I remember that day. Home from Uni, had a hangover after meeting up with my school friends. Woke up to Radio 4 on Sunday with the National Anthem playing. Went downstairs and my dad updated me with the details.

I'd forgotten that detail. Now you mention it, they played the National Anthem on the World Service too. Not sure what the protocol is for people other than the monarch, but I guess we probably won't have to wait too long to find out, not that I'm wishing death on anyone.

Yes it is. But that different languages have different meanings. Pain in English is completely different than in French. or for example vent in Dutch and French.

Well, I get quite a vent through my vent. On the other hand, if my pain produces a pain, I shall take it up with the baker.

Gem 106, simple reason was it was the first radio station that my car picked up

Years gone by I used to be an avid listener of Mercia FM but I think that's now Free Radio Coventry & Warwickshire

Capital London and Kiss 100, mainly cause they have near as makes no difference, the same playlists , which I like

Radio 1 sometimes, if they play the same kind of songs

Tbh don't listen to the radio as much, stream SoundCloud or Spotify now

To me, the problem with much music radio is that it is often controlled by marketing / advertisement types / accountants, etc., who are living back in the 1950s, and think that the best radio consists of 2 short songs followed by an ad. break. They also decree that most people only want to hear tracks released as "singles", so we tend to get a boring repetitive output. On the music radio that you listen to, how often do you here random album tracks that have never been issued as singles ? Thousands of great music tracks are totally ignored by much of the media.

Plus, some big commercial organisations own numerous radio stations --e.g. Bauer Group controls 38 radio stations according to its website

BBC is non-commercial, but seems obsessed with "age targetting" of programmes, so there are 2 channels for the teen / sub-teen audience (R1, R1 extra), R6 seems too "conservative" for my musical taste, R3 is for a minority "classics" audience, and the vast range of other musical genres gets squeezed into R2,

I don't think there's a German term for "rock" as in music, so "Rockmusik" could mean "skirted music" I suppose!

Better drag my best leather mini out when I next listen to X-mal Deutchland....(who were darned good too - "Matador" is going through my head right now...!!)

My Vauxhall has a DAB radio so in that I listen to Absolute Radio which has a good variety. The Jason manford show on Sunday morning leaves me crying in laughter, not always a good recipe when driving!

There are just a few 'favourites' on my iPhone. Five Live for sports commentary, and Radio 4 LW for cricket. Classic fm and the French equivalent 'Radio Classique'. For other music, Heartland Public Radio (HPR1 usually) because I enjoy classic country with absolutely no adverts, and, occasionally, WSM 650 for the Opry shows and, as I worked in Tennessee for a while, it is a nice dose of nostalgia.

Radio 4 fm is also on the dial - so my wife can borrow the phone to catch up on The Archers if we are out.

I am afraid that recently I have not listened to Radio 6 - perhaps previous attempts have been at the wrong time. As for my musical tastes - basically a wide range of post-Beatles rock / guitar bands such as progressive rock, country rock, bluesy rock, psychedelia, and what we used to call heavy rock (but excluding thrash metal). I like to hear a wide variety rather than listening to the same songs regularly repeated.

I honestly think you'd find a lot on 6 to suit, especially Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone and Iggy Confidential (presented by Iggy Pop).

Thanks - but just checked Radio Times and found that neither are on air at convenient times - quite apart from the fact that I can only get reliable DAB signal is in the bedroom. So much of my DAB listening tends to be early morning or late evening.

It depends on where I am. I much prefer local to national radio. Round home it's usually Gem 106, on the occasions I go to my parent's in Norfolk I'll swap to Lincs FM, then BBC Radio Norfolk.
If pressed for a national or digital station then it would be Absolute, or whne I'm in the mood Kerrang!.

I have three radios in my house, which are all on simultaneously for most of the day so as I move from floor to floor, wing to wing () I don't miss anything, and all tuned to Radio 4 FM.

Incidentally, I discovered on reading the recent obituary of Sara Coward (Caroline Sterling in 'The Archers') that I was almost certainly in the same class as her at primary school, as we both went to the same one, and she was a mere twelve weeks older than me. I can only though remember the name of the girl who sat behind me and used to dig her nails into my neck every day!
