The locomotive names post-steam never really had the same impact in the diesel/electric era as there was not such a class identity.
I liked the early warships. The Class 50s, whilst continuing the theme, picked some really obscure ships. The Navy tradition of perpetuating the same name meant that a locomotive like 'Ark Royal' could cover many ships of that name from an Elizabethan ship right through to the present light aircraft carrier.
Deltics with their regiments and racehorses were ok.
The Class 60s were the first of the political correctness brigade who did not want anythin that sounded warlike so after the competiton for the first Steadfast settled for a mix of mountains (some little bigger than molehills) and others, lets call them social reformers. Charles Francis Brush was my favourite here, the founder of the Anglo American Electric Light Corporation in1879 that amagamated in 1889 with Falcon in Loughborough. Now the present day Brush Traction.
