Yeah I like(d) the Fragonset names too.

If I had a fleet of older loco's (such as DRS), I'd probably name them after the Greek/Roman/Egyptian Gods, like "Hercules" and "Zeus" and "Ra" and "Poseidon" etc etc. :D

I notice 158 910 has been named "William Wilberforce". I saw it today.

Wasn't there another 158 with the same name? I think it was an ex-Alphaline one (???) Pretty sure it's still running around in that tatty silver livery with pink doors..........

The only unit named that. Northern have a fair few units named now, a 144. a couple of 150's. A 156, 2 158's and a 333 too. Some of the ex units are still named and 142001 was named prior to transiedr.

I'm completely horrified nobody mentioned 60050 in this thread! What an outstanding name that is:)

The locomotive names post-steam never really had the same impact in the diesel/electric era as there was not such a class identity.
I liked the early warships. The Class 50s, whilst continuing the theme, picked some really obscure ships. The Navy tradition of perpetuating the same name meant that a locomotive like 'Ark Royal' could cover many ships of that name from an Elizabethan ship right through to the present light aircraft carrier.
Deltics with their regiments and racehorses were ok.
The Class 60s were the first of the political correctness brigade who did not want anythin that sounded warlike so after the competiton for the first Steadfast settled for a mix of mountains (some little bigger than molehills) and others, lets call them social reformers. Charles Francis Brush was my favourite here, the founder of the Anglo American Electric Light Corporation in1879 that amagamated in 1889 with Falcon in Loughborough. Now the present day Brush Traction.

55002 koyli was quite good as the nameplate was HUGE!
Also 60059 Swinden Dalesman...

The precursor of GNER the LNER and Later BR Eastern region had a habit of going big on names:
V2 2-6-2s :
60835 The Green Howard Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment
and:
60809 The Snapper The East Yorkshire Regiment The Duke Of Yorks Own.
They also had the shortest the B1 4-6-0
61018 Gnu
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
After thought to my last message. Here is a picture of 6018 GNU which I think was the shortest name:

Any names from the 36 strong 'premier class' will do, but always had a liking for the names 'Thane of Fife' and 'Knight of the Thistle'.

D9013 The Black Watch, Big powerfull and in charge. You had to live through the deltic years to appreciate them and for me D9013 was the finest.
For reasons not yet fully explained she was also one of the best deltics and regularly produced power beyond the what could be expected for a 3,300hp machine

I agree - 87s had fantastic names - though of course many weren't 'original'.

'Iron Duke' is a great name for a loco. Others are too - 'Hal o' the Wynd', 'Wolf of Badenoch', I could go on! They were so evocative - brought a bit of romance back to the railways.

I've always liked the names of Bulleid West Country locos too - just generally nice places.

Re the West Country Class so strange that one was not named 'Bournemouth' !

Quite liked the 'Res' names too as applied to various postal 47/4's & 47/7's. Had a sense of importance about them.

what's "the hundred of hoo" on 60100 mean - is there a yard at Hoo or a junction or something?

The hundred refers to a Saxon division of land, on the Hoo pennisula which sticks out between the Thames and Medway estuaries.

Always liked the military names for engines, plus the racehorse names too.

Surprised ,in our pc times,we haven't seen " Lesbian black disabled dwarves" or "Osama Bin Laden"

My favourite of all time though.."Driver John Axon,G.C"...just google his name.

There should be a pendolino named Virgin On The Ridiculous ;)

Fave loco names for me have been the likes of 56076/134, the Gateshead Generators and 66725. I always liked the Western Region's mythical 47's (mythical themed names that is - there's plenty photographic evidence that the 47's were real).
