They don't look very comfortable, they don't feel very comfortable when you first sit down. But, having sat in them for quite some time on various test/training trains, they actually are quite comfortable in my opinion.

Thanks for that. Are standard class ok as well ?

Not a lot of difference between first & standard in my experience. First impression is not good admittedly, but I find them ok. Others might feel differently of course.

How do they compare with a Pendo / voyager standard class ?

Hitachi attempted to deliver 800024 to Doncaster this evening. It made it as far as North Road, Darlington tonight before returning to Hitachi Merchant Park.

Does anyone here know when the IET shall be operating round cheltenham spa?

If you mean in regular passenger service, as opposed to passing through on a test run, some time next year - exactly when will depend on the pace of deliveries of the new trains and which routes GWR regards as a priority for conversion from HST operation.

That was back in July when pan up was at maximum 20mph. There have been further tests this week at Taplow/Maidenhead (as this is where power changeover will take place - manually rather than automatic - for a while when the service starts), to see if there are any issues when raising the pan at linespeed. I was told that it was done successfully at 110mph (even though linespeed there is 125mph - probably because reaching 125 on diesel is almost impossible at present until the engines are fully unrestricted).

I was under the impression that there would be no electric service until next year, as the drivers who are currently learning them aren't learning how the electric bits work, and have to go back for upskilling at some point.

No, not at all. A significant chunk of the conversion is about Module AC, including running under the OLE, responding to ADD activations, loss of line light, coasting under the OLE etc. which is all learned and practiced on simulators.

The practical handling for mainline drivers is all diesel only at present, so those passing out are certified for 'diesel mode only operation'. Once the final details of AC running and power changeover are agreed with NR, there will be a short additional handling session to upskill drivers in running in Electric mode and the manual power changeover procedure at Maidenhead. The plan is for this to be undertaken prior to start of service.

Anyone know what worked today’s 5X80 Stoke Gifford to North Pole movement? Was two IET’s both 5 cars, one in white and one in green. A source is saying it’s the third GWR Green IET, is this true?

Thanks

Does 800013 have GWR branding?

Whatever passed my train today was an IET (claimed as 800013) in GWR green + branding and another (claimed as 800008) in Hitachi white. The 800's are being vinyled, and receive branding with every vinyl. It's the 802's that get painted at the construction stage, and then get branded after delivery.

Thanks for that, so the base vinyls and what I call the fluffy bits are being done at the same time, which makes sense if they want all the sets to be introduced on launch day to look the part.

Indeed, they are just not being done in any particular order, hence why 005 and 006 are still white yet 013 is now green. I don't know how many sets they need for launch on 16th October but I'm guessing it can't be more than 4...

It's what the revised TARA schedule says. The 7th set needs to be "accepted" for traffic (due 13/10/17) before 6 diagrams can be offered to GWR by Agility.

2 of those 6 diagrams are the driver trainers and the other 4 are the 2 x 10 car formations as from 16th October.

Similarly, the 11th set needs to be "accepted" for traffic (due 10/11/17) before 10 diagrams can be offered to GWR by Agility. These will add 2 more x 10 car formations into traffic as from 13th November.

Out of interest does anyone know what the interior plan is for GWR IET's as back in 2015/2016 we where told they would all be reupholstered before entering service(Mark Hopwoods words and also what GWR told me on Facebook) now the latest tv advert shows the IET's in the current style with the First Class head cushion being green and everything else the same. The Class 802 also being delivered interior wise in the same style as the Class 800s would also suggest this, is it because the DFT or Agility wouldn't allow GWR to change the interior for only a short amount of time before the franchise ends (i.e for 3 years) It just seems such a shame that the IETs will be only matching the rest of the fleet from the outside.

An IET may finally make it to Hereford tomorrow.

Sequence of four workings, from Stoke Gifford to Hereford via Worcester, a return run from Hereford to Worcester, then back to Stoke Gifford.

Various calls at the intermediate stations so GWR staff can check stopping points.

The DfT closed down the interior and fabric designs some time ago. They were nervous of introducing any more delay (and cost) to the GW build.

And yet no doubt the VT sets used on journeys of under 2 hours like London to leeds will be far better and exuberant whereas a train that will operate journeys commonly of 4 or 5 hours (the 802s) are getting the commuter interior. You couldn't make it up. Time for South West MPs to stand up and stop taking this sh*t

Have you expressed these concerns to your MP ?

The 802's are being spec'd by GWR as they were ordered by First Group so could well have a different interior I'd have thought.

What do you mean commuter interior?

It's a DfT interior and judging by the artist's impressions Virgin released a while back, pretty much the entire interior on their sets will be DfT-issue, just like the GWR 800s.

About the only difference will be red cloth covers on the seats in standard, which look okay, but I really don't like Virgin's ideas for the first class seats. If that's exuberance, you can keep it.

Likewise I hope GWR at least have some sort of GWR green cloth cover on standard class seats to brighten things up

If you look at this pic it shows how the IET's will go into service https://i.ytimg.com/vi/2sQvlBPFZgE/maxresdefault.jpg GWR did promise two years ago to put them into GWR spec interior wise, this doesn't seem to be happening now, and the 802s have the same interior as the IEP Class 800s.

Don't count on it, it would get GWR a lot of complaints about how some of their new trains are so much better than the others.
