No, you also do 2Hand, Reaction, Vigilance, SJT assessments

The only things left after first assessment are DMI and MMI (and then medical)

there was another attachment in the email with driver fault finding test (DFFT) material, when would that be tested?

The same day.
All the tests are run on the same day, if you or anyone else fails any part of any test then you are called out and sent home.
As said before it's then the DMI, MMI (should you be successful) then the medical on other separate days.
Good luck!

Thanks I printed off GB 5 sheets. Managed 8-9 lines on each correctly in 2mins.
Scaat printing off next.

Shouldn't need to practice Scaat. If you do gbt then you shouldn't need to do the other. Obviously depends on different tocs but I didn't need to practice Scaat.

Ok, does anyone know if GTR does a test on the Scaat paper? I don't see it in my practise papers so I guess you are right.

Cheers

Dots, they do DOTS. I did dots with them last year. Five pages.

Good luck.

Yep will be a dots test, just print off 5 sheets each day on the lead up and practise everyday and you will find it a lot easier, its about training our brain for them.

Have my medical this afternoon then should be all good to go hopefully.

Hi, I have an assessment on the 29th June..But I didn't receive any paper work to study, did you?

The practice material is in a PDF attachment to the email you get confirming your assessment date. If you didn't get it then contact them.

Hi, I passed the assessment stage one last week and was wondering if anyone could tell me how long you had to wait to hear from them to book stage two of assessments? They said to me they would be in contact about the next assessment and haven't heard anything since.
Thanks

Hello!

I’m not even sure if this thread is still open. I have my train driver assessment coming up and I was wondering when doing the tones and phone directory assessment, how quick did the tones come? I’ve heard a few on YouTube and they are really fast beeps. Is that the way it is On the day?

Any help is appreciated as with Any tips for the assessment !!

I recall about one every second (approx). Focus is the key. Some people count the relevant tones off on their fingers. Like a lot of the other tests this one is designed to see if you can divide your attention and it’s not really something you can train for. You can either do it or not. Good luck!

Thank you for the advice!! I’m really nervous! How long do you have to count the tones and search the directory eg is it like 2 minutes per page etc?

I did mine over a year ago so I’m going from memory, it’s not that long. Maybe 30 seconds or so, which doesn’t sound long but if it’s a tone a second that’s plenty of time to test the grey matter. Try not to be nervous cause that won’t help. Remember it’s not impossible or there wouldn’t be any drivers.

Remember to listen very careful to the instructions of the test and be certain what is required. If you’re not certain keep asking until you’re happy what to do. That’s within the rules. Friend of mine failed that test because he didn’t listen properly. The directory is normally a list of tradesmen. I think I had plumbers and they ask you to pick out certain ones. But they all have different symbols next to them eg two crosses or two circles etc. What they will ask you to do is pick out all the plumbers with two circles next to them for example. They not expecting you to physically read every one. My friend did this and took too long. Also most of the tests are timed. You won’t complete the tests before your time runs out. They’re designed like that to put you under pressure. Work quickly but accurately.

Thanks for the update Andys495! I will definitely make sure I understand the objective before starting!

Do you know what the pass rate is? Or how I can work out the pass rate?
Also, the assessment with the passage and then the questions. How’s best to prepare for this? How long roughly is the passage? And is the passage always on something train related? I have never been front line and so my operational knowledge is limited, would this go against me for this assessment?

Nobody at ground level knows the pass mark. It’s one of those railway mysteries. Even to this day I don’t know how close etc I got to the pass mark.
The reading exercise is roughly two sides of A4. It will have a railway theme but will not be factually correct. For example my text talked about the laying of glop on the rails to help traction. There’s no such thing, it’s called sandite.
Try and remember numbers, colours, order of process etc. You’ll have time to read it and take notes but both the text and notes are collected in and a few minutes pass before you’re asked to recall the passage with multiple choice questions. I thought I hadn’t done that well on that one but obviously was ok.
To practice the only way I can think of is to get somebody to read you a passage of technical text maybe and see what you can recall.

I did mine last week and they were quite quick (they seemed less than a second, but I was quite nervous so who knows!) but they are all the same frequency which made it a bit easier (for me) than the test which had two different tones.

Andys495 is spot on about the Glop passage and I would reiterate the advice they give about taking notes - it really helps with committing information to memory

Good luck!

Thank you!! Good luck on your results! The only part of the assessment I am worried about is the tones because there is not much out there that you can use to prepare for the tones!!

Hopefully it all goes well!

I'm sure you will be fine - we had the tones at the very beginning of the assessment and there was a lot of adrenaline flowing which didn't help!

You can get musical keyboard apps for smartphones, so I suppose you could download it and get a friend to tap away whilst you counted. As I said, I found the 2 tone test more difficult than the tone/directory test but I didn't practice for either!

Hello! Passed stage one!! Hurrrayyyy! And now onto stage 2- the computer tests. I have a few questions that I am hoping you can all help with

1) 2 hand co-ordination test: how sensitive is the controls? I’ve heard of the screen freezing etc, does this actually happen? Also I know you have to do the same shape 10 times but I assume this is timed? If so, how long do you have? What’s the best way to practice ? I’ve just bought the metal wire game, did you find that it actually helped?

2) the WAFV Vigilance Test: I don’t even know where to start with this one! How on earth do you prepare for the change in colour?

3) interview: I am assuming this is competency based or is there technical questions thrown in? Who normally takes this interview? DTM’s? HR?

4) written communications test: is this similar to the practice materials (in the form of a comic strip?) and when your writing the report, are the pictures taken away and you need to remember the key facts?

Any help is as always so appreciated!!
