GWR has not confirmed anything of the sort - uniess you can show us a link to something that says so.

In the short-term, up to the end of this year, it may well be a nine-car replacing an HST in the existing two-hourly frequency, but the enhancement of the London-Cheltenham service to an hourly frequency from January is entirely down to the availability of five-car trains.

Went to Cardiff yesterday. Was an HST as correctly predicted. Was busier than I expected it to be. When I first got on and saw how busy it was, I almost got off and waited for the next service to Cardiff which would have been a Turbo probably. But I managed to find a window seat facing the direction of travel(not really a fan of backwards facing seats!) and two seats to myself. But with the high backed seats, it felt like I was in a little cubicle!(I do miss the old HST seating and carriage interiors!) Arrived at Cardiff Central, and oh my god...... the bus station and all those shops are all gone! And in it's place a massive new office block! I couldn't believe it! Got the 1500 service back to Bristol which was a Turbo calling at Newport, Severn Tunnel Junction, Patchway, Pilning(possibly the first time I've been on a service that has stopped at this station!) and Filton Abbey Wood. With the lower backed seats meaning I didn't feel like I was in a little cubicle, and I could see down the carriage! And it wasn't very busy. To be honest, I enjoyed the Turbo journey back more than the HST journey there.

Looking forward to two journeys on an IET between Bristol and London in July though.

Oh yes, One Central Square is coming along very nicely.

What did you get up to in Cardiff?

I have to say I will miss the HSTs when they've gone, I've lost count of the number I've had over the years! The IETs are very smart however.

Tried that site can’t see where it tells you
What trains there are

I just looked up Cardiff Central and took this screenshot. 1L82 is 8 coaches, First Class at the front so must be an HST. Similarly with 1B46 but the First Class is at the rear as in normal for Down trains.

http://iris2.rail.co.uk/tiger can be useful on the day. Choose an appropriate station and select Staff View. Eight coaches means an HST, ten (or five if short formed!) means an IET. I don’t know whether it’s 100% accurate but it’s better than nothing.

There are some tests going on today, with and IET running from London to Oxford in DOO mode. Some of these runs are in passenger service. They are running for crew to get used to them running without a guard, including station staff.

1Z40 0638 London Paddington - Oxford 0804
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/V00658/2018/06/11/advanced

3Z41 0844 Oxford DCS - Didcot Parkway 0900 (ECS - Not in Pass use)
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O07377/2018/06/11/advanced

1Z41 0923 Didcot Parkway - London Paddington 1010
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/V00659/2018/06/11/advanced

After this, they seem to be shuttling back and forth between London Paddington and Didcot West End as ECS.

The big building outside Cardiff Central is for the BBC. It's been relocated from Llandaff in Cardiff to the City Centre. You are right though, Cardiff is fast becoming unrecognisable, evolving very fast. Make the most of the HST's though, they are becoming rarer and rarer on South Wales services and I for one will be sad to see them go, but I do agree, the original HST seating was far better. I have travelled on the IEP many times now, they are a good train, but the interior and seats let them down badly, but thats not GWR's fault its the inept DFT. Anything the Government gets directly involved in is guarenteed to be a balls up.

From tomorrow (13/06/18), the following North Cotswold services are planned to be 9 car IETs:

1W12 0547 London Paddington - Worcester FS 0815
1P22 0825 Worcester FS - London Paddington 1057

1W14 0652 London Paddington - Great Malvern 0937
1P25 0954 Great Malvern - London Paddington 1228

1W29 1421 London Paddington - Worcester FS 1644
1P42 1725 Worcester FS - London Paddington 1959

1W33 1622 London Paddington - Great Malvern 1924
1P47 1942 Great Malvern - London Paddington 2236

Of course they're subject to last minute change, but hopefully no teething issues will arise...

1W29 is a regular train home for me, today was 800014 which was quite loaded (but not rammed) so will be interesting to see what turns up tomorrow.

I thought the 9 cars were being introduced on the Cheltenham services first?

Often it can be two Thames Turbos coupled together.

I like the way some people still describe Class 165/166's as "Thames Turbos" when Thames Trains ceased to exist years ago.

I hope this is the right place to ask - are there any typical diagrams that 800’s turn up on the Welsh turns? Looking to get a bit more of a run on one tomorrow and I’ll be starting the day in Cardiff (looking for journeys to/from Bristol)

Yes there are loads - in fact I would say the majority of Padd-Cardiff/Swansea services are Class 800. For Bristol read Bristol Parkway.

Named for the Thames Valley routes of NSE, not the later franchise.

Which makes it even more odd that the term is still used. :D

Thanks. I’m on an FoSS so within that area. I don’t think there are Intercity services to Temple Meads from Cardiff bar one a day is there?
