I don't know the answer to that question but I'm surprised the assumption is that there's little demand. If there's going to be a service from Cleethorpes to Lincoln and beyond, which destination is likely to generate the most patronage? I'd have thought London.

Already it is recognised that Lincoln merits a regular service to London and that some trains should be extended to Lincoln. If so, why not combine them with the current service between Cleethorpes and Lincoln, and have East Midland trains terminate at Lincoln?

Why? because it is a waste of resource. Personally I would run almost all of the EC trains that should go to Lincoln to York. There are much better connections into the wider network there.

I would serve Lincoln like Hull - a couple of peak hours trains each way - if at all.

No demand? If so, why did Grand Central announce plans in December 2017 to bid for a service from London Kings Cross to Cleethorpes in early 2018 for a start date of 2020?

The proposal would involve the existing Bradford Interchange service extended to 10 coaches from London to Doncaster then dividing with 5 coaches going to Cleethorpes Via Scunthorpe, Barnetby, Habrough & Grimsby. The other 5 coaches would be the existing service to Bradford Interchange. This proposal would require permission for a split of trains as it has not been used on the East Coast Main Line before.

Is there honestly a demand for direct Grimsby/Cleethorpes > London trains. Really? Neither seem to be economic powerhouses. I suspect this is a case of because X ( In this case Hull) as a direct service to London we must have one also!
Quite - I think if there *was* the demand then an Open Access Operator would have been making a pitch for paths to run such a service in the way Hull Trains or Grand Central have. That nobody has put forward any serious proposals for Cleethorpes and Grimsby probably tells you all you need to know.
According to this article http://www.scunthorpetelegraph.co.u.../scunthorpe-could-direct-trains-london-977794 (also see near identical article in Grimsby Telegraph), Grand Central _are_ interested in running to Cleethorpes via Scunthorpe and Grimsby. Can't find anything more reputable than this though, although I can't imagine why they'd make up quotes from the MD if they weren't true.

They must be cash in it then- perhaps from a revenue raid somewhere en route ?

Seems to imply that it will run as a single train from London but with two units, the existing West Yorkshire service and the proposed new North (East) Lincolnshire route splitting at Doncaster.

Good luck with that, I have a feeling that the locals rather like living in 'Lincolnshire'.
Peterborough has been part of Cambridgeshire since 1974, having first been re-organised out of Northamptonshire into the short lived 'Huntingdon and Peterborough' in 1965.

Damn straight we do! I moved from Peterborough to Bourne as it’s cheaper to live in Bourne and commute to Peterborough on a daily basis.

Funny thing, my next door neighbour made the comment that he heard they’re reopening the Stamford to Bourne to Spalding Line. Considering there’s one bus a week (not including the school busses) to Spalding, I don’t think that commercially viable..

I'd place precisely no store by that claim - even the more extreme crayonistas around here haven't been peddling that reinstatement as a suggestion so I think you can safely assume it ain't happening.

The only reopening in that part of the world which *might* make a case for itself would be March - Spalding - and that would be primarily for freight to allow it to avoid Peterborough and run through Spalding / Lincoln rather than along the ECML.

It could work like the Waverley route is rebuild between Spalding and Boston as the side of A16 a tram system line going forward to Horncastle and Lincoln or a new curve at Sleaford what was South junction towards Boston giving Spalding a service back to Boston but to do this you want a lot more capital exempt if you live in London.

But would you want to miss out Sleaford ? Better to reverse there maybe and keeps cost down ?

There is demand and many operators have put forward plans. Grand Central (in 2017), Hull Trains (in 2009), GNER Alliance Rail (in 2014, Cleethorpes was actually approved but the operator did not want to operate it alone) and recently LNER is taking an interest. Also NE Lincs is one of the most populated areas WITHOUT a direct service to London. It would definitely pay.
