I was very surprised today to find my Arriva bus into Guildford took contactless. I'd always assumed it would be one of the later places to get it, never seeing like the most profitable bus territory. But I was very happy with the change.

mopre to do with mobile network availability than anything else ...

Just behind a passenger on a bus who initially wanted to pay with a tenner, driver made a sarcastic comment ‘great just what I needed!’ but their mood improved when she said she could pay with card instead!

So it looks like the drivers are keen with the contactless revolution!

D&G in Crewe are now accepting contactless, although don't seem to be publicising it anywhere (possibly because I don't think their Stoke buses have the new Ticketer machines yet)

Changing a tenner shouldn't be the passenger's problem though.

Contactless payments are definitely gaining in popularity down here in East Kent since Stagecoach introduced their new machines. It definitely speeds up boarding and paying for fares and reduces the amount of cash drivers have to carry making it safer too. I think sometime in the early 2020’s, companies becoming like London and introducing completely cashless buses.

But still does not reduce the number of driver transactions, and maybe could even increase that number if people find it more convenient to pay the driver by contactless rather than use a mobile ticket or ticket bought off bus. After payment in cash, buying a paper ticket with a bank card from the driver is the slowest payment method available. Contactless like in London where you tap and go, that's much better.

With a lot of places outside of London having fare stages, a tap on and tap off system could work really well. They do it on buses over in Australia. But with their dual door buses it works. Not sure how it would work with single door buses.

Just fine I reckon. Touch in on the driver's ticket machine, touch out on a machine on the pole on the other side of the door obviously facing into the bus.

Very true. And if they failed to tap out, they get charged the maximum fare.

I was told contactless is coming to Birmingham. This was an X1. The bus stop didn't even say you needed the exact change. I do think it should be advertised better.

However the driver let me on for free. My journey was a short one.

It's being trialled over the Dudley side first. Only catch is unlike Diamond, there is no short hop fare for contactless, just a £2.40 fare.

Plus with NXs implementation, there is no ticket issued for contactless (the driver prints a list of cards used for when Revenue check tickets.)

Prentice of Haddington now have contactless payment on 111 as well as the 108 (not on any of their other services at the moment.

I am still waiting for Lothian Buses to go contactless. The Airlink 100 is, but so far thats the only LB/ECB/LCB service to accept it.

In Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago and it seems that contactless has been implemented on the buses over there. Is contactless relatively widespread on NXWM now?
Not sure if it has already been said but Rosso buses accept contactless on the 467/8 (Rochdale-Bury) route, however I have seen the machines appear on other services as well. First Manchester are finally getting their new Ticketer machines in October, I believe they are the last op to be getting them.

Lancashire any time soon? Though I would guess potential contactless use is lower and there are perhaps more pressing matters to deal with on Rosso.

It's rather odd them not moving on to Burnley yet - I have 6 Transdev buses an hour past my house, 4 which accept contactless and 2 which don't. Had to change a £20 on a Burnley bus recently as I'd been planning to use contactless.

It's publicised in their new printed timetable booklet - the services run from Crewe and Wincham have a contactless symbol against them. There's a disclaimer on the 85 about certain services (operated by Adderley Green depot) not accepting contactless.

The machines on the buses have a contactless symbol on them but initially I wasn't sure whether that meant contactless bank cards can be used or whether it related to certain types of passes being accepted.

New Adventure Travel is increasing its cash fares next month but keeping contactless ones unchanged.

The OP mentions of Lothian buses not have contactless. The airport 100 have now had contactless since July last year.
https://lothianbuses.co.uk/news/article/airlink-is-going-contactless
It is stated that if successful it could be rolled out to the other services 'within the next 12 months'. Well, it's been 9 months and I haven't seen or heard anymore.

Apparently there has been delays receiving the new machines ..... and we are now 13 months down the line (from Airlink receiving their contactless machines)....

Do any of these contactless payment systems, outside London, offer multiple operator daily caps?

The vast majority of them just take the form of paying for a paper ticket by card.

That, or paying for a ticket (or carnet of tickets) that is is then loaded onto a smartcard.

I don't think any of them offer single-operator daily caps, let alone multiple operator daily caps.
