Thanks, I gave it a go and hopefully get some feedback on where I went wrong.
The hope is still alive, I will try again

Hey,

Sorry for not making it mate.

Also wondering, with questions was it very fast paced and If you can remember what were the time limits given to you on them?

Cheers m8
The pace was fast, it didn't seem to be about finishing each section but instead about working fast but accurately on each one.
Go as fast as you can but try and get it right.
The last test was 1 hour and 10 minutes and the questions were about your judgement, answering a question with 4 answer choices in the order you would prioritise them if that makes sense.
When I speak to them I'll try and find out what I failed on and update
Good luck

I've had an email saying my application won't be progressing any further, going to call to find out what the reason is or what I failed on so I can work on it for next time
Ah, Sorry to hear that. Glad you get anther crack when the time comes. Was it Arriva HR or the OPC that emailed you?

Hi all,

I've sat the stage 1 and am waiting to hear back but have a couple of questions if anyone can help.

If all stages are passed and you go onto the years training, do you get the reduced or free travel on the network while training?

Is there any reason that new cross gate are recruiting trainees again when they did already last year? Did trainees fail the training or move onto other depots?

I'm in a secure job that I've just started, the money isn't as good as a train driver but isnt far off and I really want to go for this role as I've wanted it for a long time but with a young family my responsibilities outweigh anything else and if there is a high failure rate in the training process it would make me a little hesitant.

Hopefully someone can give me some answers and I hear good news about my stage 1

Thanks

Because many NXG Drivers are putting in for chingford

Because many NXG Drivers are putting in for chingford, the secrets out about T&Cs and many of them live closer to Chingford so dont mind the slight reduction in salary.

Chingford is right in my door step, gutted it’s for new cross and not there

Hi,

Someone mentioned VSE at the assessment centre. There's no mention of this in the material they sent me. I'm told stage 1 is Bourdon, SJT, DFFT and TeaOcc.

Could anyone shed some light on this please? Thank you.

VSE is stage 2 assessments.

The ones you have identified above are definitely stage 1 assessments. I actually called HR a week or so ago when I got through the sift and they confirmed what tests would be conducted

Thank you Saffa. Crikey, is it the OPC one with the track on the left and the changing shapes on the right (that is a killer). I think it's easier to join Nasa as an astronaut than get a job as a train driver in the UK.

Haha!

Yeah, I've not done the VSE myself yet but from what I hear, it's not very enjoyable!

It's not. Just don't panic. If you make a mistake and most do don't worry just keep focused on the next change/ sequence.

Earliest book on is 4.15am, latest book off time is around 1.30am.

There is a separate night link but this is currently filled by volunteers.

Shift pattern averages a 4 day working week (currently 34 hr week I believe). Minimum of 2 rest days off per week. Rest Day pattern differs depending upon what link you are in.

One link is pretty much always work 4 days & 3 rest days each week (with a 6 day long weekend every 4 weeks). Other links can have 2,3 or 4 rest days each week (with a 7 day long weekend every 4 weeks)

32 days annual leave (34 after 5 years service) + Christmas day and Boxing Day (currently!). If you are scheduled in the roster to work on Christmas Day or Boxing Day you will get these days off as 'extra' leave days. If your rest day falls on either of these days, you will get these rest days back by them being added to your annual leave allocation . There is no service on Christmas Day and Boxing Day is covered (currently) by volunteers.

Trainees are only ever recruited into New Cross Gate or Willesden Junction depots (but you can put your name down for a lateral transfer to another depot as soon as you pass out - although switching between NXG and WJ depots (and vice versa) during the training course itself is also possible if there is a vacancy and it is done before you start your handling module).

Very helpful info! I've still got a long way to go in the process, just wanted to know what I was getting myself into!

Hey guys I hope you are all doing well
I’m yet to hear absolutely anything I’ve completed the application on the 10th of November but ever since then nothing but the confirmation email. I have sat and passed all the driver assessments and the MMI 11 months ago and they were enhanced tests for Crossrail. What’s really keeping me on edge is the radio silence I’m getting. Long story short I just want to know if I am the only person in this position. Also congrats to everyone who’s made it through so far :)

You are not alone in this Taz26, radio silence for me to! Until I sent an email about my progress today and thus received a response stating:
"We are still shortlisting for the position. We have had over 4000 applicants so response time can be up to a month."
I applied on the 8th of November, so almost three weeks. I am happy now to wait it out after reassurance from this forum. There are good folk here!

Congratulations for those passing the tests!

you will be going to the OPC office in Watford , there Will be fewer people at this one ( I had 6 on my day 2).
You will do a mixture of tests ( sorry don’t know the names for the tests ) some paper based and some on a computer, as put above , you will do the old stare at the blinking grey square test , you have to push a button as quickly as you can when it changes colour.
You will also do a search exercise where you have a photo pop up on the screen for a few seconds , you will then have 5-6 options to chose how many items you saw i.e;

Car
Motorbike
Traffic lights
Pedestrian
Shop front etc

I think you get 5 separate photos.

Another test is the hand ( using both hands ) , eye co ordination test where you will have to draw a line around a set pattern trying to keep your line with in the set pattern , for this you will have two joy sticks , one will just control up and down movement, the other left to right movement. If you draw outside the pattern you get a warning noise , you need to move it back in as quick as possible.

Another test is the VSE , I personally found this the hardest , it’s broke down into 3 sections ;
First part you watch a dot( simulating a train) making it way round a track, as soon as it skips a part , or maybe two dots appear you push a button.
Second part, you will have a series of shapes , if these shapes match you pick( note they don’t have to be next to each other) , No fault button , if they don’t match pick , fault.

For example

* +

^ *

+ ^

See the 3 shapes match , so this is a no fault

Then you have to do both together, the train going around the track is your primary task.

Unlike day 1 you will get told your results as you go along , if you don’t pass a test you go home.
Survive all the tests , it’s then time for your MMI.
Apart from that it’s not to bad lol
