Ah that's interesting, I was told it's 9% when I interviewed last week and have just been offered the job today, all I can go off is what I've been told I guess.

I may be getting it confused but it seemed like the junior driver has always been a role and was predominantly the source of mainline drivers, as there's a lack of junior drivers they have had to recruit for trainee drivers.

Like I say, I don't get the allowance ,so can't say.

You're getting confused, the Junior Driver role has only been introduced within the last year after a trial in the North, it hasn't been a source for mainline drivers as nobody has been a Junior for long enough yet.

There was previously a driver operator role, which was similar, but that also accommodated people who weren't able to go mainline for various reasons.

Trainees are needed because there's a shortage of drivers in certain locations, so they need trainee mainline drivers and junior drivers. Ideally, in the future, it's a natural route of progression from junior to mainline.

Well I'm certainly enlightened and feel privileged to be amongst some of the first.
I definitely seem to have gotten the wrong end of the stick on this somehow. Cheers.

As it stands the communication with DB has been brilliant, they've actually made an offer prior to the medical and given a potential start date. So I actually have a substantial offer. FL have only put me through a medical so I don't know where I stand. Yes we can all see it's probably leading to a course, but I'm not jumping the gun. There's also a whole host of pros to the JD role that the mainline role doesn't have at this stage.

So what you going to do?! Well done on the offer! Very lucky position to be in!

Cheers mate, for now I'm pursuing DB as the offer is there and it works better for my family. If FL make an offer in the next week or so, then I have a real tough choice to make.

As far as Im aware, once you've done the medical your guaranteed an offer (bearing in mind you know your clean). Plus DB could just be desperate for new starters. Personally I would advice Freightliner. Solely on the fact it is a trainee mainline role rather junior depot driver. A driver once told me that nearly nothing is worth turning down a mainline role for a depot one.

I know mate it's a real tough one but I have to weigh up what's best for me now, I will get to mainline either way, just via a different path.

Well it's been so frustrating seeing all these Junior Driver and Trainee Driver roles advertised for locations down South when I currently live up North and therefore unable to apply for them. Would give so much to be in the position that some of you lot are in now. Good luck to you all!

JD will be a lot better for family life agreed. I know the salary is t great, but it’s a path to mainline if you want it, plus you’ll be posted at a single location, meaning no lodging etc. That’s the way I’m looking at to at least as I have a young family. Good luck!

Have you got a JD job too now mate? Great news if so!

Cheers mate, most must think I'm crazy, but I'm just looking at what's best for now. Plus I can't help but have more confidence in DB given how good they've been and not keeping me in the dark. I'm rooting for you massively too!

I don't think you're crazy. DB is better in terms of training location for you, you won't have quite the salary drop you would with FL and you say you've been told you can roll straight through to mainline. Plus a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush - those of us pencilled in for a Feb course at FL, we don't really have a guarantee yet despite what anyone says :(

That's what's really worried me with FL, is all this being kept in the dark. I have to hand it to DB they've been great.

IMO, would be crazy to turn down a confirmed offer on the basis of what we've got from FL at the moment. Even the people starting in January haven't had their contracts yet; I won't lie, it does worry me.

Just even a proposal and uniform order would be nice at this stage to make it feel real. DB have sent their proposal and other paperwork before my medical appointment.

Thanks mate. I’ll get there...I’m one step closer than I was this time last week too. DB do seem to move faster than FL from what I’ve read here and from experience. For example, when told I was in a pool for an interview, I thought it would be months as opposed to weeks!

Do you happen to have a number for recruitment? The one on the email I received is incorrect (it’s too long....I’ve tried knocking the last digit off etc but it’s still apparently not correct).

Is it a number for DB or FL you're after?
I don't have one for DB as I've been dealing with them via email and believe the person I'm dealing with is handling candidates in this region (which probably explains the speed).

Yeah it’s DB’s number I’m after. There’s a number on the email but it doesn’t work. Have sent an email but received no reply as yet. I’ll give it till Monday.
