TPE Newcastle crews WILL be working the Newcastle-Edinburgh leg as will York crews. Glasgow crews currently sign Newcastle-Edinburgh but not south of Newcastle and currently no plans to at this stage. (Although that may still change)

Glasgow crew (drivers) don't sign Edinburgh to Newcastle yet. However have been told they will be working Edinburgh to York

It was mentioned in the most recent podcast about the route knowledge requirements.

Lots of changes coming for a few depots.

Couple things.

1. HT never had any long-term plan to operate an HST, and the operation was only made possible by virtue of LNER using them over the ECML already. AFAIK, they aren't cleared to run from Leeds to Huddersfield, and beyond to Man Vic & Liverpool - certainly not in recent history.

The railway isn't as simple as we'd like it to be, but that's life.

HSTs did work - on very rare occasions - between York, Leeds & Liverpool Lime Street as substitutes for failed loco-hauled trains in (i think) the 1980s.
And I have a photo of an EM/MML HST near Earlestown on a special working a few years ago - so should be no problem, in the very unlikely event t.

Another planet...
To be fair, them being cleared in 2006 doesn't mean they're cleared today, but in this case they are, the NMT's booked to do it.
Throughout most of the early years of Virgin Cross-country there were regular ECS moves of HSTs between Manchester and Leeds/York. Very little has been changed since then and as you say, the flying banana runs through regularly. The 950 also crops up in Huddersfield from time to time, but I think it mostly covers the Penistone line which has a 10mph limit for heavier trains over at least one of the viaducts.

I've finally seen a layout diagram for the TPE 802's.

Interestingly only 24 seats in 1st class and 1st class to be confined to coach E - standard class seating throughout all 4 other carriages.

1st class is in coach E on all the new fleets.

I’m glad this is the case as first class never has the demand of standard

4 of the last 6 times I’ve travelled from York to Manchester or back I’ve not got a seat in First or got the last one - with others standing as well. And not all at peak times either. Pretty much 1 group of 4 heading for the airport tips it over the edge.

Also got to remember that the 802s run to Newcastle and Edinburgh and if they up the quality of the First Class offer they will likely start to pull customers off XC.

The 802 has 6 less First class seats than the Mk5’s but that’s just where they are on the train - it certainly wouldn’t be worth going into the next coach.

Are the class 802's coming in for the May timetable change or are they waiting for December?

With the Mk5's looking to not be in service anytime soon, seems like it would be a massive relief for TPE having some new rolling stock soon!

I suspect longer than May time...

Well I’m glad they haven’t gone OTT with first class like virgin and it isn’t 2 full coaches of first class for example

Will we be in electric mode north of York?

Whilst heading to Leeds this afternoon I couldn't help but notice a TPE 802 sat on Neville Hill.

Anyone know what it was doing there and which unit it was?

Both the TPE 802's are there, 802201 (I think that's the vinyled one) and behind it 802202. I think I read somewhere they're are doing tests for LNER.

Are they affected by the 'death ladder' issue in the same way that the LNER Azumas are?

I saw 802201 at Leeds on Monday night (https://flic.kr/p/T6PxZY) whilst on a test run from Neville Hill to Crewe via Huddersfield and Manchester and then filmed it passing Huddersfield.

If LNER were using the units to test, I would've thought they would have been testing them out between Leeds and Huddersfield since Azumas will be operating on that route but the TPE 802 didn't stop there so presumably they're just being based there for the time being for their tests. It was also crewed by Hitachi personnel.

Another interesting thing to note is that the rear carriage is missing seats completely
