I think they are all gorgeous, no just kidding the worst looking (in terms of design not ugly-ness) is the class 220/221

and the 465`s

Do we have to stick to the UK? if not, I'm not suite sure if the Nankai 50000 series is supremely ugly or weirdly good looking.

Of currently UK stock, the 317/7 (specifically that sub class) is a bit wrong looking to my eye.

On the other hand SWT Driver, I like the 458s. Very forward looking design, just a shame it didn't work as well as they wanted it to!

For me it has to be 442s. Don't know why, don't like the front end particularly.

The Danish and Dutch units there can at least explain their ugliness by function- in both cases, it's how to provide a central, reasonably spacious driving position AND still have a wide inter-unit gangway connection- though I believe on the refurbished version of the dutch units they've plated over the connector.

The 442 would have looked better if they'd given it the faired bogies that some of the concept shots had.

Within specific ranges- the 360 is the ugliest of the Desiros in my opinion. Just something plain and a bit ungainly about it. Similar, really to the 376, the ugliest of the *stars- why no gangway, and if there's a good reason, why not the 357/170 cab?

168/0

Mixing the 165s with a 168 is just fugly. I like both of the units on their own though. 165s are awesome and 168s are really nice inside.

I agree that the 317/7 front end design does not work, but I think that some Belgian units look hideous - and the 458s of course.

Yes on the, imo wonderfully named, koplopers, the connections are no longer used. IIRC it was because they were becoming very unreliable.

The IC3s (as well as the IC2, IR4, Oresundtrain, and NMBS AM96), I quite like, becuse it's quite a clever design; the whole front is a corridor connection. The controls and seat are attached to the door, so the whole front opens :D

As for ugliest, I have to say either the somewhat duck-like Talgo 350s;

Or the N700 series Shinkansen;

Head on shot of the Nankai 50000 doesn't quite convey the full horror. Have a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIV7fihqSk8

OMG i have seen them before...it was on another forum where I started at provocative thread about English trains looking the best in the world...and someone came back and said that, that odd circle train was much better looking than a class 390!!

I can't kind of understand the rest, but I can't see how 158s are ugly? :s

Granted I might be a little bit biased, but I think they've got more character than any of these 'Desiro' families of units. ;)

Got to say the 220/221s as they look incredibly messy compared to the Class 390 and the 222's.

Not ugly but to me, i just find the Class 150/1s just look weird without a Corridor connection on the end units, but could be im used to the /2's from being from the southwest Nr Castle cary.

QUOTE]

These units are nicknamed 'Pato' which actually means Duck in Spanish so your not the only one to see the resemblance.

As for my choice, the upcoming TGV replacement, AGV by Alstom, IMO it doesnt look as well built as the TGV it replaces and the front looks weird too
