They are talking about Houghton and Sunderland South on BBC. That is where I come from. My extended family live there. 11% swing to Tory is incredible.

Shows how sensible the voters in your home town are, and how far labour has fallen...

Cherry on my cake would be Swinson and Lucas both losing their seats. I note BBC are predicting zero seats for greens. If that happens I’ll be into fireworks and champagne territory!

Bizarre that with the climate emergency upon us, elimination of the party that champions environmental causes is apparently cause for [EU-sourced, incidentally] champagne.

We've all lost. You just don't realise it.

@bramling and @43066 I hope you're both ready to hold your party to account for what we were promised:
  • 50,000 nurses
  • 100,000 new homes per year
  • 40 new hospitals
  • Free trade deal with Europe by end of 2020
  • etc, etc
You got everything you wanted so now I hope you're ready to own this come what may. If the exit poll is accurate there are no excuses anymore. You can't blame "remoaners" getting in the way with an "obstructionist" Parliament and "biased" Commons Speaker.

Your party is completely in charge to do what they like so it's on you and them what happens for the next five years.

And it’s all thanks to momentum and Corbyn

I think this is an excellent result.

We need to move on from the utter morass of the last few years. We need to move beyond the arguing and get a strong government into power who can deliver, for once.

I haven't got everything I wanted. BoJo isn’t my first choice, but he will hopefully do the business.

Happy to own all of it - I just hope the exit poll is correct - and have just purchased a bottle of champagne (to keep on ice) to that effect - it would be so cruel if it were to be wrong and snatched away from us!

I've hit the scotch over the fact that this country is going to be screwed over by the Tories and their bumbling bambling band of baboons. I'm seriously thinking of emigrating to Ireland or the continent.

I'm looking forward to seeing the result for Chorley. Last time I believe Labour received about 98% of the vote, the highest by some margin in the country. Imagine if it were won by the Conservatives....:):)

With the SNP likely to be the real opposition, Johnson might well give them the independence vote just to get shut!!

**Thinks; will we still have the freedom to move to Scotland even if they join the EU??**

I think they will, if this happens, work hard to engineer a "brain drain" of companies and people and so will invite immigration from England. If they do I might be very tempted to take them up on it; Scotland is a beautiful country.

I would be astonished if the Tories took Chorley, given that they aren't standing there!

Let's assume these figures are roughly correct. They will have absolutely no excuse to not lead us to the sunlit uplands of Brexit that they promised. Let's make sure they're never allowed to forget it when they fail.

If the exit poll is right it gives the Tories over 46% of the overall vote doesn't it? Surely that's too much and the Tory majority will be a lot less in reality (and the exit poll doesn't count postal votes and there are a lot of them)?

Ah well, i better start saving up for when the buffoon starts selling the NHS to Trump and his chums. You watch, Boris will release his stiffled Russia Report which will prove they interfered in the referendum and 2017 election

Oh yes, they won't be able to blame all that on Corbyn. They won it, they own it.
Five years down the line there may well be a centre-left rejoin party enjoying the fruits of the coming omnishambles.

I thought they stood in every constituency. Are there any others where they aren't standing?
Presumably they aren't standing in Chorley because it is the safest safe seat in the country?

We need a moderate Blairite (no phoney wars) Labour back. They might at least have a chance of taking Government next time round.

In the meantime we have a pathological liar and a hard Brexit :( :( :(

Maybe Scotland will have me when it declares independence?
Mrs C is my route to an Irish passport if things get too rough thankfully.
Let’s see how it all develops though.

The annoying thing is, with IHT rates remaining as they are I'm likely to inherit a very substantial amount on top of what dad left me as an only child and no other claims....so I should be skipping, yet I'm thoroughly depressed. Labour would have cost me at least £100k if they were in power. But anything to keep us in the EU.

No, it's because it's the (new) Speaker's seat.

Well I'm afraid that says a lot about the kind of person you are then doesn't it?

"As long as I'm alright I don't care about anyone else".

it does indeed. I’m an evil disgusting Tory. It couldn’t possibly be that I’m a perfectly likeable bloke who just so happens to have different political affiliations to you, could it?!

Typical hatred of the left evidenced right there...

@bramling, high five chappy, we’ve just won. Again!

It seems I misread about the greens.

Perhaps if Lucas focussed on climate change rather than on distractions like all-female cabinets then people might take her a bit more seriously. So, yes, I would be cracking open champagne to celebrate the loss of such a poisonous individual.

I have nothing against Tories whatsoever.

I just don't like selfish people.
