Hey all.

After this mornings adventures on twitter, I got to thinking about social networks - the only way I am social on the web is via twitter on this forum so not much!

I was just wondering what everyone else thought about social networks. I find them annoying, too many people are addicted to facebook in my group of friends, an example of which -

I was talking to a friend of mine about a relationship between two of our other friends, I asked how he found out and he replied with "I found out over facebook". He then took the liberty of telling everyone we knew.

What are your opinions

Can't stand them, i don't feel the need to advertise myself or explain all the inane situations going on in my life, but millions feel otherwise! I like the forum, thats good enough for me. Don't care for twitter either, i just don't get it! :D

I only like twitter because there is little to be said on there - you only have 140 characters to share your thoughts and opinions, I don't need to tell anyone who I'm dating, who I'm employed by or what I want as a pet lizard.

Yeah, thats more or less my take on it. I knew a guy who had to resign from his job recently, due to comments he made on facebook.

Would have another message withdrawn off the Forum if I disclosed my honest opinion of it.
Put it this way, anyone I interview that I find out is on Facebook or Twitter, their Resume' goes straight in the Bin.
I find the whole thing sad and full of exhibitionist wannabees.

In which case, the blame surely lies with the people for putting it online.

I use Facebook, but use the privacy settings sensibly.

I wasn't really blaming anyone I just don't feel the need to gossip about something you've read over Facebook.

Infact I don't feel the need to gossip. Fullstop.

I hope my previous message did not offend Tom. I have friends who are on Facebook and some like yourself use it sensibly, but others I know? Well, all I can say its rather embarrasing to say the least. If some people knew what was being said behind their backs over what and whom they have as friends or allow as friends, or what they say they do on their Facebook, well they might just think again. They are standing jokes and cannot see it.
Whats wrong with your email address book contact list with your closest that you know and keep things private and sensible?

I wouldn't touch Facebook or Twitter with a disinfected barge-pole. Already spend far too much of my time on various forums and Fotopic, absolutely no need to bore the world even more!

I don't mind the Social Sites, but the Status Updates are quite annoying, like I had cheese sandwiches for my tea and it was very tasty! and other Inane things to be honest, most people could not care less!

I don't use Twitter, but I have found Facebook an excellent way to locate people I have lost touch with by other means. I only ever go on to FB to send or read a message, I find the minutiae of people's lives less than interesting!

I must have caught up with dozens of people I haven;t seen for a decade or more, and, of course, this would only have been possible due to the popularity of FB in the first place!

As many people have said, it's how you use it!

Basically, I use social networking sites, and my mobile phone, for little else except arranging going places and doing fun things!

I find that Facebook is a useful tool for getting in touch with people. I’m a bit of a technophobe meself, and I’ve long lamented the loss of a time when people would actually meet up face to face to discuss life in general, and when meeting people didn’t need reassuring every two minutes via text that the other persons concerned were going to turn up!

For running a University society like I do, Facebook is a godsend, as it makes it much easier to organise and advertise upcoming events amongst all the members of the society much faster than by newsletter, although I do also maintain a regular weekly Email update. I associate with some rather interesting folk, who like me use Facebook occasionally to relay the more unusual and interesting aspects of their lives to their friends through photos and the occasional well written story or report; rather than the sort of people who are wedded to their PC/laptop and feel an urge to update their status every time they breath as if somehow that interests others. Use of Facebook in the latter manner is what can make it so tedious.

I’m not interested or involved in Twitter, and I have a Myspace account purely for keeping in touch with various local bands that I associate with. Social networking sites can be useful in keeping in touch with people in order to organise events, but in no way does a life of cyberspace substitute for meeting up with people in the real world and actually going forth and doing interesting things!

Spot on sprinterguy! Some people on FB seem to think that telling everyone they have run out of mustard counts as doing something interesting!!!

The one that does my head in (and it only seems to be women IMO) is attention seeking Facebook status updates such as:

"<insert name> wonders whether the Doctors will have my results today"

to which the usual responses are "OMG, what's up? Hope you are ok" etc....

Also status updates such as one that someone has posted quite recently:

"If you saw me on crimewatch what would it be for???"

I don't look at status updates usually, but one I noticed and stuck in my head was

'xxxx is about to make some tea'

WTF would anyone want to know that???

I've had a few from someone who has just had an operation:

"WOMB etc, you are being evicted, please leave big mamma's house!!!!"

"Hates being in hospital and being poked and prodded, I wanna go home and snuggle with my man!!!" via Facebook for iPhone

"Has a bladder infection...will they let me come home???" via Facebook for iPhone

"Is extremely distressed and has to report that sadly my womb did not weigh the 3 stone I had hoped it would, i am hoping when the swelling goes down I will be lighter pmsl!!!"

I must have some odd friends :D

Im a user of Facebook and to be honest all the inane status updates just amuse me. Everyones life is different and i suppose after reading some of the crap i do on FB it makes me greatful for the life i have ;)

Social networking sights can be useful in many different ways, ive found numerous friends from way back and its so nice to be able to catch up.

Then i have family in Canada, Australia, Spain and hong kong so again its nice to be able to see pics of their families ad keep in touch.

i suppose theres for and againsts with everything :)

I don't really use Facebook too much from a social point of view but I have found it to be a very cost effective way to promote my professional photography and gain new business, so for that reason I love Facebook!

Facebook is a great laugh, I've managed to keep in touch with lots of people I know who've moved abroad, or I've met on my travels.

I am a user of facebook and Twitter.

Facebook.

I seem to be an addict, always seeing what other people are up to and keeping tabs on whats happening in the world. But it is handy for keeping in touch with people that otherwise you would have no contact with what so ever. Its handy for posting pictures for others to see, giving news and other things, but the part about facebook that really ****es me off, is all the things people click 'like' to. Its that stuff that clogs up the newsfeed and hides real things to read. Plus the bitchyness that facebook creates is annoying too.

Twitter.

I have twitter, but I use it maybe once a week, I follow a lot of news services, so its good to see news from all around the world on the one page. Other than that, thats all that I use twitter for.

I always wonder what will be next? First Myspace was all the go, then facebook came on the scene and everyone flocked to that and now, who has a myspace? And now twitter has come about, so what will be next?

That could be classed as discrimination if it was found out that you interviewed someone & you refused them just because they're on FB or Twitter. Wouldn't surprise me you have a high turn over on your workforce, if that's the way you treat them, that's if you have a workforce!

I honestly can not see the point of twitter at all really.

I use facebook for what others have said to keep in contact, get in contact with old friends etc. Some peoples status's who i know can be very anoying some times.

For example 'Back to work even though I still feel like crap :s oh well at least it's nearly the weekend'
One of my friends she is apparntly not too well but goes out every single weekend and gets wasted.

And another 'ex friend' who moved to Aus and Married her one year boyfriend (we think for other reasons) Continues to post rubbish how meat eaters are all evil and everyone should be Vegan etc and all she ever posts.

By the way 'http://youropenbook.org/' That is a great site type in a random word and comes up with peoples status who haven't set their profiles to complete private etc. A lot of good laughs on their.

Quite a few people seem to enjoy their whole life being broadcast via Facebook with some either being stupid to the grossly irresponsible in both photo and word content. Believe me, you can learn a hell of a lot of a persons "alternative" Curriculum Vitae on Facebook and for that reason, I take a "Dragons" quote and say "I'm Out".
No high turnover in workforce neither. We have learned that the Recruitment of older hands win hands down on the younger staff, who essentially, sadly, just don't wanna know. Sorry, thats the way it is.
