Please use this thread to update any speculative development in alternative traction arrangements due to the recent grounding of the 80x fleet. Once confirmed, please use this thread in the Fares Advice & Policy forum.

Note that existing posts will not be moved from the original thread due to excessive workload however new updates in the existing thread will be deleted.

Just to clarify following some feedback from members, this thread is not intended for any "my idea for what can/should run instead" type of discussion, but for any current rumours on what may be running and for speculation on any possible moves planned but not in the public domain, queries on if a move is possibly related to this incident, and any related technical discussion as to why a specific type of traction can/cannot run, that sort of discussion. There will inevitably be some overlap with existing threads but we will closely monitor the progress. As usual, feel free to flag anything problematic up via the post report mechanism.

Could Castle Class HST's be used on services further up the Great Western Mainline?

West is best
Railcam now shows 5Z37 as 37668 and a "set" going to gwr to cover for iet.
Are there pc's ready to go at Laira still then?
It’s possible that they are going to run more Castle class HSTs (there was intended to be spare power cars). Either to extend existing services to destinations that Castle class HSTs currently do not serve, to in-fill in place of IET/80x in areas where Castle class HSTs already run, or so that they can displace more Turbos for use elsewhere.

Hey there all, LSL diesels Are headed southbound from Crewe - Laira, any idea what for? The general consensus seems to be that they are to cover for IETs, but in what capacity? Will they be operating services? im in need of this information in a timely manner so any responses are appreciated. Thanks a ton guys.

I think that's for the services you'd run, ie: "I'd make sure there were trains between Swindon and Didcot", whereas this is for "I'd run Flying Scotsman between Newbury and Taunton" ie: the traction you'd use.
EDIT: see below

No. This one isn't for the "what would you run"/"what would you like to run" type of discussion.

This is for any rumours on planned tractions.

It was due to depart 10 minutes ago and still no consist showing, nor are any West Coast or LSL locos allocated to the train for their next working in TOPS.

EDIT: It isn't due to actually enter the main line for another 5 mins, but the consist should be in by now if it's going to depart any time soon.

2 went from Long Rock to Laira yesterday. The 37 is a WCR loco and was showing at Carnforth in the early hours, seems strange that would work it when LSL have their own locos..I guess time will tell
2 LSL 37scurrently in the Far North with the Chairman's jolly.

Castle Sets are only authorised to work in passenger service over routes they are currently scheduled to work.
Not strictly true based on what someone who knows has said on another forum.

In any case, it can be changed. Amazing what the railway can actually do when it wants to.

This Forum is good at naysaying or finding trivial reasons why something can't or shouldn't happen. I could list loads of things that have been naysaid on here and then happened.

If the class 37688 is taking down say Mk3 coaches, could those be hauled on the GWML by Class 57's?

The Mark 3 move is fact.... but is HST trailers.

https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/24508/2021-05-10/detailed

I had speculated in another thread that the class 37 was hauling Mk3 trailers, but thought that it might be loco hauled mk3 trailers rather than HST trailers.
Former EMR trailers, in EMT livery with "Locomotive Intercity Limited" branding, seen here at King's Norton (it's a crop from my rather bad video, but shows the branding):

Here's 37688:

Reported elsewhere by a reliable source that three c2c Class 387s move to GWR tomorrow to help out.
