The toilets on the Porterbrook 150s have the pre-flush button, apparently it helps save water. The toilets in the Porterbrook units are of slightly higher spec than the Angel lot (which applies to much of the upkeep to be frankly honest, for example Porterbrook units have new external door leaves which mean the doors operate much more smoothly on their lot)

What does the pre-flush button actually do, other than make an awful lot of noise?

Just gives the bowl a squirt of water before the toilet is used in an attempt to make the flush more effective, I believe (so 1 flush rather than 2 is enough to clear the bowl, resulting in lower water usage).

Seems a bit counter-intuitive to me; considering the vacuum flush cycle takes quite a while I don't think it's all that common anyone would flush it twice, so the additional water usage at the start might outweigh the water saved

(I'm just a nobody on a web forum though; Porterbrook have probably done actual research into this so I'm not discounting it!)

However there maybe interesting developments in the next few months regarding the future of Northern's 153s.

The Heaton 158’s swap about via the S&C and also via the daily York - Heaton and vv ECS move. Heaton 158’s are diagrammed around Hull and the Leeds -Carlisle/Morecambe services when not in the North East.

No Northern 153’s are diagrammed to work post Dec 21 timetable change.

Looking at the units for Dec 21 the Leeds - Wigan service will be either 2x2 car 158, 3 car 158 and one diagram with a 3 car 195.
