37800 and three 456s. Think one of them is 015, but I can’t be 100% as I only saw from a passing train!

8504 has been remarshalled as five cars. No return date but its five car length on a four car road now means it is sticking out of 12 road London end for those passing the depot that need it.

5905+5727 were taken out of service at Waterloo though an ECS to Wimbledon Park Depot.

Thanks Warren. Cant get up until the weekend  Does 'Prepped spares' mean it will only come out to cover failures at short notice, or could it be back running normally again?
Ready to go back out in service immediately.
Back out this morning starting with 2K03, 0557 Kingston Rounder.

Does this mean that it’s planned to return (even if it has no date yet)?

Do we know anything about 458535 at Clapham yard? Have they given up on the unit?
Warren knows better than me, but I think it's waiting spares.

As mentioned, it used to have a lot more, especially when it had an allocation of loco hauled passenger and non-passenger coaching stock. I'd imagine a chunk (if not all) the shed was unelecteified at that time.
Now just 36 Road…Not sure whether round the back still has electrified…6 and lower? I think it is, was electrified a few years back.

Perhaps this warrants a new thread, but why was this recent 3rd rail electrification considered safe when Uckfield/Merseyrail extensions were not? The ORR will no doubt have some interesting answers….

I expect it’s probably risk assessed in combination with what’s already there. Likewise the new third track for about a mile south of Eastleigh which was provided with third rail a few years ago, described in the planning as a freight loop but now used routinely by passenger services.

Its a retained unit so whether it runs for a while before or goes straight to LM/Widnes I can't say as I don't know but has to be mobile either way.

8535 needs skating from Clapham and time either on the bogie drop, which is quite busy or in the lift shop which has been down to one road as 8504 has been a long staying resident.
8505 is a prepped spare with 8510 this pm so this one is back.
8506 had a depot test run, still more work required before proper test run.
5848 now on the comeback trail. No date but it's been moved from the cleaning shed to the main depot.

Because it's in the yard, so the same does not apply AFAIK.
Otherwise, they would have probably third railed Basingstoke to Reading.

I guess the same can be said for LUL being a special case? (eg Battersea)
That's different, although I don't know a lot about it…Depends on if it suffers from trespassers and whether it is enclosed.
I think the general rule is they want to overhead wire as opposed to third railing.(as it's safer)
Like Reading recently has been overheard wired.

I would guess because they are just sidings within the confines of an already third-rail electrified yard, as opposed to stretches of mainline railway 'out in the open'? The inability to do even such minor schemes as this would have had a detriment on capacity improvements to the network over the years, with other examples such as the new Feltham depot and additional sidings at Farnham depot also being third-rail electrified, and the remodelling of Reading station increasing the number of third-rail platforms from two to three (4A/4B to 4-6).

Per the updated stock list in post 500 are any more 455s going off lease in February other than 5866 and 5918? If SWR reinstated their Dec 21 metro timetable and with all 456s now withdrawn can all services be covered without major short-forms - ie: 8/10 car service becomes a single unit. I would hope the 458 conversion project will take a pause to get the first units up and running (and properly tested) on the Portsmouth line to ensure fit for purpose.

Remember that the 12 retained 707s more than make up for the loss of the 456s in terms of capacity.

However, I'm still extremely puzzled as to why the 456s have been withdrawn at this stage. Apart from a desperate need to save money it doesn't appear to make any sense.

Have you not noticed the number of 455s and 458s that have been reactivated though since? Redistribution of 456 technicians has helped do this. The amount of staff off because of COVID is still affecting the railway. There are probably financial and political pressures up top but at the ground people are dropping like flies at the moment that actually do the work!

NO 455s go off in February at all. The fleet stays at 87 for now.

5866 is one of an at least 12 strong list for C4 overhaul being drawn up at the moment.

Okay, well those were cited to us by a number of members in the know back in December. If they're no longer going off-lease in February I'll remove the "off-lease in Feb 22" tag with the next update. Thanks for mentioning.
