Southeastern have announced that the Maidstone East line will stay shut for the remainder of the day. There’s 1tph running between Ashford & St Pancras and that’s it for the entire network currently. Wouldn’t be surprised if some of the metro came back to life later but the routes out into Kent probably won’t reopen today (or if they do it’ll be very disrupted by further tree based incidents).
Presumably HS1 was built to a spec which can withstand strong winds that would disrupt other parts of the network. The route definitely is devoid of trees around the tracks, and I'm guessing the OHLE is of a much more durable specification?

....but it's pretty exposed on the Medway Viaduct.

I guess the first couple services tomorrow morning on some routes in SWR will be cancelled but run as ECS in order to check the route is clear for passenger trains to run?
There is planned engineering work taking place between Bournemouth and Southampton Central this weekend. In the event of weather related events affecting this work, is it likely that the RRBs will still run as planned?

Strange how that clip about “no hurricane” always tends to be cut short just before the “ but it will be extremely windy though”…

Yes, he was talking about the remnants of Hurricane Floyd which at one point looked like they might come our way, but weren't.

He then went on to talk about the rapidly deepening low in the channel.

Although 1987 was hurricane-force, it was never a hurricane as it didn't develop in the tropical water. So he was completely right.

Ironic that Meteo group is a private company, founded in the Netherlands and now owned by US interests, whereas the Met Office is part of UK government (an Executive Agency of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to be precise). So spend which previously generated income for central government now goes abroad...

A bit like some foreign-owned rail companies here post-privatisation...

Tree on the line between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly?

(Source: BBC Radio Manchester).
The Manchester Evening News chooses to illustrate this with a bad picture taken with a phone out of a stationary train window at Cheadle Hulme. Presumably there is a house rule saying you can't write an article without including a picture?
Open train times (https://www.opentraintimes.com/maps/signalling/macclesfield#LINK_1) implies the problem is with the down line in the cutting approaching Heaton Chapel and that trains are now moving in the up direction.

Not sure if it’s mentioned but EMR have stopped any new journeys south of Leicester with the 13:32 STP-SHF being the last available service
EMR have also suspended all services in Lincolnshire/East of Nottingham.

Apparently there is some sort of issue with whatever is used as the information source for departure screens, currently at Stratford Upon Avon where the service to Hatton is apparently running on time (but is not shown in journey planners nor is the service running at all)

Just viewed that infamous forecast on youtube. The full version (2 mins34 seconds) can be found by typing michael fish forecast 1987 into either Bing or Google. In it he reassures viewers that there isn't going to be a hurricane, which was technically correct as the sustained wind speeds didn't reach force 12. However, when referring to the "vicious" low pressure system that became the storm he said that the strongest winds would pass over France and/or Spain rather than southeast England. I think words he uses to describe the weather in England is "quite windy" which is hardly as bad as what the storm turned out to be

Tfw reinstated services from Chester to Liverpool and Manchester Piccadilly with 50mph speed restrictions, just as the storm hits the North West. Great planning by Cardiff control.......
As Northern have been running them since start of service, why not?

Network Rail have now posted a video of this on Twitter.

Tweet contains a video showing a roof peeling off an adjacent building and landing on the tracks at Banbury station.
I've had a mooch around on Traksy, Not necessarily London- There are lots of 'ROOFS' 'TREES' plus 'SHED ROOF' 'BILL BOARD' and I only had a mooch for a couple minutes; It's going to be a massive clean up operation.

And yet…

National Rail shows SWR as “Amended timetable and Storm Eunice affecting services” with a yellow warning symbol against it.

Once again the railway can’t communicate. How hard is it to change it to a red symbol with “All services suspended”. Utterly, utterly inept.
Even now the service indicator has a yellow triangle but it does say no service. Heathrow Express is the same.

And it looks like nothing is now moving in the vicinity of Hebden Bridge since about 2:30pm, so presumably a tree on the line?
Trains do now appear to be running again through Hebden Bridge with delays of about half-an-hour.
Only moving in the Manchester direction though, the other line is still blocked.

The strongest winds now appear to be over East Anglia and heading over to NL.
So the worst might be behind us.

Seems so down SW way, although it's hardly calm yet - Newquay still reporting gusts up to 46kts so if I were on the Bristol channel I might be keeping an eye out still. However, there's power outages *everywhere*, this will take quite a whlie to fix... 4 hrs ago WPD were saying 120k+ houses & haven't updated since. Saw a HST through Dawlish on the 10 mins I was checking it, so *something* was moving earlier.

Just had a couple of trains go past where I live, by the West Coast Main Line, about half a mile south of Lancaster station. From the angle I saw them at, not possible to see how many passengers were on, or even if there were any.

I wouldn’t say it’s been mainstream news, certainly not until yesterday evening. Most of the weather-related news coverage has been related to Storm Dudley, not the likely effects of this one.

Completely agree the info has been there for those who have sought it out, but for whatever reason is really didn’t cut through to the population - in the London area at least.

Picked up again here in North Herts after a lull.

Meanwhile there’s a rather direct tweet on Thameslink’s social media feed in response to someone asking what arrangements are in place to get people home. The wording is along the lines of “If you chose to travel against the Do Not Travel advice then you will need to consider how to make a return journey without a train service”. Ouch!
To be fair to GTR, they were advising people not to travel yesterday. Not all TOCs were doing that.

Part of the roof has gone at Eastbourne. Station closed and all trains stopped along the coast.

There are currently no trains running between Victoria and East Croydon. What are my alternatives as I want to get home?

I saw a series of Tweets with SWR where they said someone who needed to travel should travel around the same time tomorrow.

When they said they needed to be somewhere by midday, they were told to refund the ticket and buy a new one.

This was going to cost them £80 more or something like that. Obviously they weren't keen.

Surely to foster goodwill and repeat business, railway companies should take a common-sense approach and allow the earlier travel.

Acting likesl this will put people off.

It's not the TOCs fault it is windy but by fostering a good relationship they might get extra repeat business. What do others think?

I hope it's easily repaired, I love Eastbourne station.

Or perhaps a reglazing.
It’s the tiles surrounding the clock face outside which are precarious with some missing. Obviously inside is out of bounds but I don’t think the current wafer thin roofing would have survived the storm. It’s constantly leaking when it rains so god knows what 70mph winds would do to it.

1C56 Barrow-Manchester Airport turned back to Lancaster.

One service got through Preston fine: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:12686/2022-02-18

Interesting to see how this turns out because if services can't even go through Preston the whole north WCML is in trouble.

I'm worried across the board that there's going to be disruption for quite a while, the damage across the network has been substantial with more to come.

I believe they can pass through but the station is closed to passengers

As I mentioned bits fall off Preston roof when someone sneezes. It tends to reopen quickly once anything that's going to fall off has done and an inspection has been done. Though in the 1990s they once used the Res platforms for a few days while particularly bad damage was repaired. It really does need redoing properly.

May not be the quickest but the easiest way is possibly Victoria line to Brixton and 109 bus to Croydon
