It's more a case of "It's too distant for me to be able to afford it without going so far off-course that it becomes too distant period". If XC were fairer price wise, and I could get a decent advance in both ways, I would get 9 hours on a basic daytrip leaving Bristol TM at 07:00 and returning at 23:00. But too keep the cost down, I have to go all the way round by Crewe and Manchester, which is anything up to two hours longer, which reduces it to five. Couple that with not being to use my railcard before 10, or my bus pass before 9, and that 16 is reduced to 13; going the long way round, that leaves just 3 hours. Not enough in my book.

@ Matt: A southern one would be appreciated... :D

Get up early. Advance Bristol PW > Chester with ATW £15, advance Chester > Huddersfield with ATW £7.50. Day Rover. Nice spin and a few hours in WY.

Hostel next to the Clyde overlooking the bridge into Glasgow Central used to be my base for bashing and pub ticking round much of Scotland. Not sure how much it is now but think I used to pay about £15 for a bed in a room shared with only one other person (and often they were no-shows), though cheaper was available if you didn't mind a dorm that could fit as many in as Ibrox!

Used to do it on a Y-P discounted ticket to Northern Ireland via Stranraer, at about £50 at the time- the railway lines and real ale pubs round Glasgow were just a distraction on my way back home, usually for a football match. The booking office clerk at Wandsworth Common got to know her NIR geography really well, as I'd regularly buy a return from WSW to wherever Bangor FC were losing toplaying that week.

OK folks; a little warning: I am starting to feel ill (migraine and more actually). So if I don't respond, you know why; if someone answers and the others feel (s)he is right, then play on. Anyway, see what you make of this...

Oh, and sorry for jumping in like this. I just want a turn :(

I'm going to give you all five minutes, and if no-one has it I'm going to pull it. This headache is getting too strong. The floor will be open if that happens, as it was before I called a turn.

OK; that's it. I'll recycle it next time I do one. I'm going to bed...

Sorry to hear that Ivo. There's something naggingly familiar about your phot but I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm sure with a clue I would have got it, that is if TB or Brian or someone else hadn't steamed straight in with the correct answer.

Try this. The train's too much of a giveway so I've rather crudely blocked it out.

Seeing as I know that 142094 has seen the original of this shot, I think Crossforth has it :)

Unless it was going to be a Tyneside electric in one of the bays, then only something like that would give it away!

As for those who said it was York...

EDIT: Was this one I saw on the WY Day Rover? Thinking about it now, it does look familiar.
