Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

I'm in disagreement with you on this one - partly anyway. I worked out several things earlier in life that I never do such as ironing, peeling potatoes and peeling and deseeding tomatoes so any potatoes that I cook have the skin left on, and I don't notice the problem. If I were paying a vast amount in a proper restaurant maybe I'd expect them to be peeled, but it doesn't bother me at home so it doesn't bother me when I'm out.
I think I've cumulatively not wasted about a month of my life by not doing various things like peeling potatoes by now.
Deseeding tomatoes? That's a new one for me, definitely never seen it in any recipes I've followed.

I'm with you on ironing, the only clothes I own which require ironing are a couple of formal shirts reserved purely for job interviews, weddings and funerals, the last time I wore one of them was in January 2020.

Delia’s all for it, wouldn’t you know?
Shirley Conran was big in the 1970s, most famous for her remark ''life's too short to stuff a mushroom.'' Even now, some people attempt to peel mushrooms. Why, oh why?

The texture of mushrooms is horrid. The taste supreme.

There's your answer!

I'd 100% disagree the flavour is 'supreme' but I won't offer my view on mushrooms. It's not a positive one, that's for sure!

If I could, I'd ban smartphones from saying they have signal and a 4G data signal when they have nothing of the sort. If the '4G' signal can't even load a basic page on this forum, or the RTT homepage, then something's gone wrong! This sort of thing is happening way too often for me lately, and was causing much annoyance on my lengthy journeys yesterday.

There's other things people were doing yesterday that I'd absolutely ban, but equally I'd sooner just click my fingers and banish them from the face of the Earth! That's a bit off-topic for this thread though

The problem with indicating the presence of a viable 4G signal is that problems that you describe won't necessaril;y be known, let alone caused by the mobile provider's network, e.g. slow loading of pages can be caused by congestion in other parts of the internet infrastructure, yet the RF signal from the base station is strong and continuous. Although both of the sites that you mention are probably not closely related in IP address terms, they could be affected by breaking news, e.g. news of a network day with £10 tickets. ;)

It can also be caused by the phone's memory being nearly full...

Phoned Virgin Media up this morning. Received an email yesterday saying my contract was increasing by £6/month. Not happy with that so thought I’d phone to try for a better deal.

Took seven key press options to get through to who I thought was the correct person to speak with. As usual a message said they were experiencing a high volume of calls so put on hold. How come whenever you phone it’s always a high volume of calls? After 15 minutes of awful music I gave up and hung up.

So I phoned again. This time I followed the options for cancellations. After about 3 rings I was speaking with a real person. Surprising that. Not at all being racist here, but unfortunately he was an Asian gentleman and I had great difficulty in understanding him. However he was very pleasant and patient at my requests to repeat most of what he said.

The good news was that after about half an hour I came away with an improved package at £13/month less than what my current contract was going to be. It does irritate me that, like car insurance, you constantly need to contact the provider to get a better deal. We have been with Virgin Media since they took over from NTL. Long service counts for absolutely nothing.

I had a similar thing happen to me with Virgin. The new customer only cheap contracts should be outlawed and the price should be based on what services you have.

Domino's Pizza adverts. Youtube is saturated with them when I view it. I don't think I have ever ordered one of their pizzas and because of these adverts I never will. If someone offered me one for free I would throw it to the ground and stamp on it.

It's not the sole purpose that anybody sees/hears the advert rushes out and buys the goods, - name awareness is a prime reason for repetitive advertising, and by quoting it specifically by name here you have made that process a bit more effective.

Domino's have a habit of being twice as expensive as every other pizza outlet.

Shop loyalty cards. Sell the goods at the same price to everyone and stop harvesting the the shopping details of customers.

I'm quite happy to get 5 copies of the Times, A Saturday copy of the Telegraph and a copy of the Sunday Times free every week, a cup of decent coffee on every visit, a choice of two discount vouchers from eight every week and every 3 months, several pounds worth of vouchers just for allowing my corner shop to know what I spend and where I live.
There is no disadvantage for those who choose not to take part, just no extra benefits. The company get's plenty of information about me as one of the types of customer that they have. Even those who only use their credit/bank card to shop are providing some useful information, anonymised of course.

I get your point but anyone who reads my post will feel the negative vibes and I will slag Dominoes off at every chance I get until I expire.
If I saw one ad a day instead of every 4 minutes I might try their product.

Well the prices will be higher, the money for these promotion has to come from somewhere.

The money for promotions is recovered in knowledge of their customer's shopping patterns, generally by keeping them on board. Those shops that don't attend to that frequently miss opportunities for aligning their products with what their customer demographic wants. It isn't a zero sum situation where value is depressed by promotion alone.

Please do tell which store this is, because it'd save me several pounds a week right there if I had one in my neighbourhood, but I'm pretty sure I don't! Now that Tesco restrict their discounts to Clubcard holders, it could be argued that there is a disadvantage for those without the card. Sainsbury's haven't quite gone down this line yet, but I can see it coming. Some of the latter's discounts are quite derisory anyway, can be as little as 25p.

I have a Tesco Clubcard but only ever use it when it gets a reduction off the price. The value of the points is laughable.

If price, as opposed to value is your aim it might not suit you. For me, it's normally Waitrose, - which in my experience is little different to Sainsbury or Tesco if you compare like for like in the product itself, rather than the store's line labelling.*

* by that I mean that Tesco's 'Value', or Sainsbury's 'Basic' products do not stand comparison with Waitrose 'Essential' range for value, and Waitrose main (middle) range compares well with Tesco's 'Finest and Sainsbury's 'Taste The Difference' offerings at similar prices.

I hereby ban the sale of Christmas related cakes, pies, savouries, etc, until the start if November.

It's August - already my local supermarket has Christmas food on the shelves....
Like with hot cross buns, there now seems to be an almost year round market for mince pies.

Funny you should mention that... a couple of hours ago I was on a bus, with a bunch of youngsters sat at the back playing "Last Christmas" by Wham on a smartphone!
