Differing stock in the same town/city

Some places, such as Bath, have a wide range of stock and plenty of character as well. 150s, 153, 158s, 159s, the odd Pacer, a daily Voyager and of course HSTs give the city quite a nice range and character. It even had 180s little more than two years ago, and gets plenty of 66 freight workings as well. For a city of 83,000 people, that's not half bad!

On the other hand, my home town is twice the size of Bath. And yet, all it has, for the most part, are two different types of dull EMU, 321 and 357. Neither is especially interesting in any manner at all, and yet - barring the odd 315 on peak duties - that's all it gets. It doesn't even get much in the way of freight workings; one 66 a week to Pig's Bay is it I think! For a town of its size, Southend is a big disappointment.

What other extreme examples are there, related to settlement size? Where else is quite small and yet can proudly claim all manner of different trains, or otherwise is raher large and gets sod all of interest?

In Leicester we get HST, 222, 170 and the odd 156/158 depending on who's working the Ivanhoe Line that day. Pretty uneventful I'd say.

Possibly the only perk of living two stops away from Stevenage is the fact that East Coast HST's stop there when heading down to London and up to Peterborough. I'd say you get at least one passing through every hour if you're at Potters Bar, being near to Kings Cross.

Stirling also has sleeper trains six nights a week, don't forget.

Ivo- what about Basildon? Nearly the same size as Southend. Unless you count Billericay and Wickford, it's only served c2c's 357s

Aren't Bath, Leicester, and Nottingham all cities rather than towns?
Stirling was only recently granted city status
Also don't forget the Class 37, 47, 57, and 66 that also pass through Stirling

In Scotland I would go for the town of Carluke, sees just about everything that passes in and out of Scotland except Class 15x and 17x units

379s definitely count; they'll be regulars on service trains once the lot have been delivered

Hmm 158s...

Don't even get anything else on Sundays, just 2x 158 on some workings...

Because of this rather picky point, I have edited the title to "town/city" (it was supposed to cover all locations!). Pompey is also a city ;)

As a town, Basildon as a population of roughly 100,000. This actually puts it in a worse position than Southend. However, given it only has the one route (as such), which only has the one type of stock anyway, it's not really the same. Basildon has a reason to have nothing interesting (one TOC with a uniform fleet), whereas Southend doesn't (two TOCs, one of which has roughly ten different types of vehicle).

Not sure what it gets now but Doncaster was my old stomping ground and regular services back in the day (c1992) got:

08
20
31
37
43
47
56
58
60
86
89
90
91

141
142
144
150
153
155
156
158
307
321

Wasn't unknown to see the odd class 33, 50 and even 73, along with 317, 319 and others visiting the works. Even LUL stock could be viewed from the station on occasions. Departmental vehicles would even add 25, 45/6 and 84 to the list.

Present services I'm guessing:
08
20
37
43
47
57
59
60
66
67
86
90
91

142

156
158
170
180
185
221
222
321
325
333

Want to add 373s too, though I know thats not current.

Are Nexus Metro units ever visible from the station?

Some may find the boring, I don't I always enjoy them. The exception being the Class 376 ... :p

Locowise:

Class 66 (the obvious!)

Class 59

The odd Class 67.

And A1 Pacific 60163 'Tornado' is based at Hither Green whilst in London.

I would consider Reading has quite a limited amount of stock considering how busy the station is. HSTs, 165/6, Vomiters and Junipers is all you'll get for passenger; 66s for freight. Occasionally a Desiro will stand in on Waterloo duties, and there's the sleeper 57s.

Never seen a 455 or 158 in the past couple of years.

You could add in 172s though :P Also there's a yellow 31 hauled NR train at Didcot often which I imagine must go through Reading regularly?

When do 172s go to Reading? :?

I was just being flippant, trying to think of something unusual - there was one parked up about a month ago (testing coupling with 166/165 I believe).

(Unfortunately the tongue-sticky-out smiley just looks like a slightly mad laughing smiley).

Erdington - 12x 323s in each direction and thats absolutely it.

Same for most Cross City North stations.

How I would love to be served by 321s and 357s at my local station....
