Some places, such as Bath, have a wide range of stock and plenty of character as well. 150s, 153, 158s, 159s, the odd Pacer, a daily Voyager and of course HSTs give the city quite a nice range and character. It even had 180s little more than two years ago, and gets plenty of 66 freight workings as well. For a city of 83,000 people, that's not half bad!
On the other hand, my home town is twice the size of Bath. And yet, all it has, for the most part, are two different types of dull EMU, 321 and 357. Neither is especially interesting in any manner at all, and yet - barring the odd 315 on peak duties - that's all it gets. It doesn't even get much in the way of freight workings; one 66 a week to Pig's Bay is it I think! For a town of its size, Southend is a big disappointment.
What other extreme examples are there, related to settlement size? Where else is quite small and yet can proudly claim all manner of different trains, or otherwise is raher large and gets sod all of interest?
