It would, however, make far more sense to lose far fewer seats by putting any such installation at the former First end than by installing it at the other end.

As this is talking about 165/3 cars it’s not former first class but it’s still in use as first class on these units.

On the two car 165s, the bike rack was fitted at the standard end, with the first class end refitted with standard seats.

Logical as it means the number of seats are similar in each coach taking into account the universal toilet in the former composite coach

One for this Sunday (07/01/2024):

This service is booked to be formed 6 car DMU (3x 2 car 165) and runs to Oxford via a reversal at Foxhall Jn and the Didcot West Curve. The 6 car then does a couple of trips between Oxford & Paddington before ending the day at Oxford.

Any particular reason for this?

Edit - Just seen the WON

I’m lucky I saw this as I was considering making a whole new thread to ask about it! Are these services featuring the reversal west of Didcot genuinely booked as Turbos? I am aware that the timing load “Pathed as Class 165/1 or 166 DMU at 90mph” as opposed to “Pathed as Class 80x on diesel, changes en route” is essentially meaningless.

Of particular interest is the return working 1P51, the 13:46 to Paddington, given how rare DMUs into Paddington now is. CrossCountry are also doing certain things around Birmingham, so this could make for an interesting day.

What does this mean?

Yes, definitely booked as 3x 2car Turbo. Info from the Traction diagrams.

WON = Weekly Operating Notices. Lists temporary speed restrictions, engineering possessions and other pertinent info.

There also appears to be a 2 car 165 to run in substitute of an IET between Oxford and Paddington today:

Edit as of 1711:
The remaining services were replaced by an IET at short notice, so the 165 is currently running back to Oxford Depot as 5Z72:

I wonder if it will still happen tomorrow due to the flooding around Didcot, unless that flooding doesn't affect the diversionary area

---

Edit, also saw a pair of 2 coach 165s on the Paddington - Oxford services. I guess with a rapid turnaround after Didcot there were drivers at both ends so as soon as driver 1 keyed off, the driver in the back could key in to continue?

(I never knew the 1V64 1929 Gatwick Airport to Reading service swapped lines at Reading to form a Basingstoke service [2J67 2110 Reading to Basingstoke] a few minutes after arrival at Reading with the unit from 2J64 2023 Basingstoke to Reading to form the 1O92 2133 Reading to Gatwick Airport service with an ECS move from platform 8 to platform 5 [guess it can't simply remain on P14 or P15]

Oh so that is why i saw a 2 car 165 go past Acton Main Line. I was heading back home around that time.

Not one single 166 on Portsmouths today.

Accompanying the 158s, the poor patrons have been subject to: 165101, 165103, 165108, 165131, 165132 and 165133

and yes, some of them were single 2 cars

My last night night return from Oxford revealed that the 23:05 to Reading/Paddington is no longer a 166. Instead, it is now a class 800.

I thought the class 166 that was used on the 23:05, was the returning Banbury service, going back to the depot via Paddington and back.

It wouldn't have been a 166, it was a 2 car 165. It would run to Paddington as 1P47 then couple at Paddington to the ex Greenford unit, then the 4 car would run back to Oxford as 1D48. Both units would end the day at Oxford.

1P47 (now 2307 off Oxford) has been a 800 (5 car) since the timetable change.

165117 needed a couple of new wheelsets, as they all happened to be on the centre vehicle, the decision was made to chop it out and run as a temporary 2 car.

RTT shows 165117 returned to service as a 3-car last night on 1O96 2333 Reading - Gatwick, after six weeks as a temporary 2-car.

Where have all the Turbos gone? None in Devon yesterday and so far just one 2 car 165 today.

Loads of short formed trains on trains on Exmouth-Paignton services as a consequence.

165104 running in lieu of an IET between Paddington to Oxford today (subject to change as of 13:37):

Update: 20:59

It then terminated early at Reading "due to a fault with the train"...

...for it to be replaced by 165112!

Hazarding a guess, as the North Downs Line is closed all this week, freeing up a fair number of 165s, are they being put onto Paddington diagrams to enable more work to be done on the 800 fleet?

Nah, just lack of 800’s and Pad-Oxford is about the best they can do all day without running into issues of crew knowledge if they go further
