The job description is slightly misleading as they are actually only looking for people able to work out of VIC and ORP

Doesn't this strike anyone as odd? Absolutely no publication of what I would wager is a long awaited vacancy.

*Just about* within the travel time for Orpington, so might be worth a shot. Or, could hold out for Grove Park... Though, I've often wondered how TOCs work out driving time, because that will vary depending on what time you're on the road...

This job has been up for sometime, I applied for this role back in October last year and it’s not been taken down once, so It’s had me wondering if it’s a recruitment error.

Nope it’s not, they open and close it as necessary as it has a ‘no expiry’ date on it. We’ve been told internally that it has been released.

ORP and VIC are the priority locations, but we’ve been told we need drivers everywhere this year and applications will be considered for all depots.

Honestly can't believe how many T&Cs Southeastern drivers have sold to only be on 54k.

Yeah getting the key at all costs is how some people treat it, but a few incidents and your bogged down for good at that specific TOC

Can’t they buy those T&C’s back? Get ASLEF to negotiate it for them? Or does it not work like that?

Buying them back if it is possible would lower the Salary, unless its a trade off for whatever else hasn't yet been sold

Interesting as when I went to apply for it yesterday it said I had already applied and it was referring to my application from October last year.

Be interesting to see when they start reaching out to people then.

This is true. There’s definitely a lot to be said for leaving sooner rather than later, as the intensity of the work they do lends itself to operational incidents, especially on the metro network.

There are former SE drivers working for Avanti, EMR, Crossrail and Eurostar, to name just a few.

ORP and VIC are the priority locations,

I’m not surprised re. VIC, given how many of their drivers have recently left en masse for another TOC (also in central London)!

54k? Got to be one of the lowest TD salaries in the UK? And you've got to live in the most expensive area of the UK.... ouchhhh

They already have. They invited me to book for assessments last week but most likely I’ll just ignore it.

Title: Trainee Train Driver - Orpington & Victoria Applications Only

This bit appears to have been added to the advert:
PLEASE NOTE SOUTHEASTERN ARE CURRENTLY ONLY ACCEPTING APPLICANTS THAT RESIDE WITHIN THE ORPINGTON & LONDON VICTORIA VICINITY. ALL OTHER APPLICANTS WILL BE WITHDRAWN AT THIS TIME. PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR SOUTHEASTERN'S NEW TRAIN DRIVER CAMPAIGN FOR THE FULL NETWORK DUE TO GO LIVE IN MARCH.

If you're waiting for other depots, there's some good news I suppose. Not sure what "vicinity" is but I suppose if you meet the required driving time, not much to lose.

I currently have an assesment day booked for Shunter driver booked in for this week coming, mean while I’ve been waiting for my trainee driver application at SE and various other TOCs to progress.

After reading the above it’s making me think is it worth going to my Shunter driver assesment day especially when deep down the trainee driver role is the one I would like.

Let me know your thoughts.

Greater Anglia is similar, they and SE are now by far and away the lowest train driver salaries in the UK (possibly along with Merseyrail, albeit they’re in a much cheaper area of the country). As above you can earn almost as much as a DLR passenger agent, and a guard at one of the higher paying TOCs should be able to out earn SE drivers with a moderate amount of overtime.

Personally I would hang on for a driver role. If you’re in the catchment area for SE metro you should have quite a few TOCs to choose from.

Thanks for your opinion and that’s what I think I will do to be honest.

Just hope withdrawing my application dose not annoy them to much and fingers crossed I hear something with the SE trainee driver role with them.

No worries - I think that’s the right thing to do. It could be viewed positively, as showing you’re committed to the role you really want.

Best of luck with the applications. It’s a process I don’t remember fondly, but well worth it in the end!

Yes it is. It is regularly brought up here about how poor Southeastern's salary is (all relative of course) considering they've got Overground, SWR, GTR, Elizabeth line and other TOCs at London terminals on their doorstep. Coastal / Kent depots tend to recruit rarely, for few positions and often filled by internal transfers.

High Speed recruits fairly regularly, despite being based in popular locations, which tells its own story.

Because of course most of the time it is not "High Speed" driving and actually DOO driving through the Medway towns and Kent coast...

And Northern, on £54.5k though in a cheaper area to live. But they have a staggered pay progression - you don't get the full rate until you've been qualified for 2 years (so roughly 3 years after you start). The first year is only paid around £23k for externals, internals retain their previous salary.

Merseyrail are on around 66k now (Labour Mayor)
Greater Anglia could have been on more but I believe they have good tncs Drivers wanted to hold on to

I've no idea when the last Southeastern pay deal was

I keep reading the lowest pay but i feel is also the most unfair compared to other toc?
1. They want you to pass all the tests in 1 day and I believe is quite overwhelming(and i think some toc have that split in different days)
2. If you fail 1s the second time around have to do all the tests again even those you already passed.(other toc wont make you do it all over again as results stay in systems for 3 years roughly)

I think this put people applying for on a great disadvantage and the second point is the worst of all as i know some people that went second time around and failed something they passed previously

There are quite a few other TOCs that do the testing all in one sitting. There is advantages to that and cons in the same way as the other option which is split dates. The hope is that you have the ability to pass the testing no matter how it comes.

SE has a very good training program from what I hear of those who've recently joined them as Trainees. Good variety of work and traction compared to the other TOCs. As a Trainee its really not a bad option to join, do the hard work well and keep your nose clean and you'll have options to leave to other nearby TOCs as a qualified later on if you want to.

If you cannot take the pressure of the Assessment day; feel free to apply elsewhere. If you cannot take the pressure of passing some very easy 'tests' then imagine what will happen when faced with killing someone who jumps in front of your train and then needing to face a potential 1k passengers, NR, Emergency services, TOC control, and Christ knows whom else.

There are quite a few other TOCs that do the testing all in one sitting.

SE are no longer a TOC that always tests in the same day. The MMI is now split.
