Are the 175s still leased to TfW at the moment or all now officially "off lease"?
They are still on lease except for those moved to Ely.Are the 175s still leased to TfW at the moment or all now officially "off lease"?
The Ely moves are what prompted my query as it is often a case that houses "off lease" units - thanks for confirmingThey are still on lease except for those moved to Ely.
I think they are just being stored there until they know what is happening with them.I live in swansea and can't help but notice how long the 175's have been sat around at the old GWR 43 works in Landore! What are they actually doing in there?!!!! Speaking with friends and colleagues at Ponty, they're costing TFW an absolute fortune (tens of millions) to get rid off because of the general condition and number of defects, but only went through refresh in 2019... how are they so bad already?
150279 been mentioned quite a few times on Facebook as its been dumped at Landore for agesAccording to a Facebook group a 150 comes off lease soon. Anyone have details?

A while ago there was a similar post and somebody mooted 150236, as that unit is the first that requires its C6 overhaul. But not heard anything concrete.According to a Facebook group a 150 comes off lease soon. Anyone have details?
Someone on Facebook has claimed that 150242 is far worse and is beyond economical repair. This claim was dismissed by others, however, confirming that both are currently being repaired.Being one of the ones involved in the Craven Arms incident (IIRC) it will be interesting to see if that particular unit ever works again.
It is noted that TfW is currently drafting a future fleet and decarbonisation strategy looking at fleet plans up to 2040. This anticipates that the Class 153 units will predominantly operate on the HoW Line until around 2030, when they are expected to be life expired. While there is currently no firm plan for the replacement fleet, it is currently anticipated that the Class 153 units will be replaced by 2-car Class 197 units that would be cascaded from other routes.
By this time the popularity of the active travel layout on the Class 153/5 will be fully understood and consideration can be given to similarly modifying the Class 197s before they are introduced on to the HoW Line. While the Class 197s will not be brand new, they will still offer a modern fleet designed around current PRM requirements and will have a higher level of compliance than the Class 153s they would replace.
I will have to get some more trips on the HOWL in over the next 6 years then. Can't see me wanting to do it on a 197Surely it would have been better to order a few more 197's on the current order and negate the cost of maintaining the current ageing 153's and converting the active travel 153's given the 197's on the route were pretty much inevitable anyway.
Being retired and eventually scrapped after parts removal. This is 150236 correct? What's going on with it?Realtime Trains | 5Z36 0800 Cardiff Canton Sidings to Landore T.M.D. | 20/03/2024

Basically it's life with TfW and basically any operator is just over? Why?Being retired and eventually scrapped after parts removal.
It's reached the threshold for requiring its' C6 exam. Porterbrook do not want to pay for any further exams on the units so they are being off-leased as they reach that threshold.Basically it's life with TfW and basically any operator is just over? Why?
Sad to see 153s being phased out, remain extremely popular.Taken from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/tfw-‘active-travel’-class-153s.264423/
So 6 more years of the 153's with the expectation of being replaced by 197's, which isn't any surprise.

Oh dear. Let's hope some 756s or 398s enter service before too many 150s get retired otherwise real shortage of trains on TFW network. It's reached the threshold for requiring its' C6 exam. Better hope so, once the 150s are released from Ebbw Vale and Pembrokeshire, there should be more available to cover the ones being retired. It probably won't last though so better hurry up! Surely TfW see this happening.Oh dear. Let's hope some 756s or 398s enter service before too many 150s get retired otherwise real shortage of trains on TFW network.
Are the off-lease ones the ones that will be cascading to GWR?Oh dear. Let's hope some 756s or 398s enter service before too many 150s get retired otherwise real shortage of trains on TFW network.
There has been no confirmation they will, with many comments saying they'll be retired as c6 overhauls are required and that porterbrook will not fund it.Are the off-lease ones the ones that will be cascading to GWR?
I am reasonably sure that GWR are receiving TfW 150s to release 158s to cover HSTs when they go next year unless things have changed in the last month or so?There has been no confirmation they will, with many comments saying they'll be retired as c6 overhauls are required and that porterbrook will not fund it.
No confirmation on anything, rumours of 175’s or 158’s from TFW. Where did you hear 150’s ?I am reasonably sure that GWR are receiving TfW 150s to release 158s to cover HSTs when they go next year unless things have changed in the last month or so?
I have heard this all from people who work at GWR. 175s and 158s reportedly denied due to being non-standard (158s because Perkins engines and 175s for obvious reasons) and GWR want 150s for a quick entry into service as they need stock ASAPNo confirmation on anything, rumours of 175’s or 158’s from TFW. Utter nonsense. The Cambrian/Class 158 ETCS fit is of the older version that won't be compatible with the ECML ETCS installation for a start. The most likely situation as regards 158s is that the TfW fleet will go to EMR (due to ERTMS fitment for operation on ECML). Anyway, I don't want to get into the world of speculation!
