LNER have announced their intention to celebrate the legacy of their Intercity 225 trains with the naming of a class 91 loco on May 22nd:

London North Eastern Railway announces 225 Day

London North Eastern Railway has announced plans to hold a 225 Day later this month.

The Intercity 225 trains were introduced nearly 40 years ago to complement the Intercity 125 HSTs on the East Coast Main Line.

22nd May 2025 will be dubbed ‘225 Day’, with LNER honouring the special trains as well as naming a Class 91 locomotive.

The Class 91 makes up part of the 225 set, providing the push or pull, with a Driving Van Trailer, or DVT, on the other end of the train.

On the 22nd, LNER say that they will name one of the Class 91s, the specific one is yet to be confirmed.

Dr Linda Wain, Engineering Director at LNER, said: “Our InterCity 225 trains have been running up and down the East Coast Main Line for almost 40 years now and it feels right that we celebrate all that they have done across those years.

“Consciously or not, millions of people have interacted with these giants of British engineering, and in their swansong years we want to recognise the mammoth impact they have had on the rail industry over the past four decades.

“225 Day is a perfect opportunity for colleagues and customers to come together, share memories, and celebrate the hard work these trains have put in.”

Steve Timothy, Stakeholder Director at Eversholt Rail said: “Our iconic fleet of InterCity 225 trains have provided millions of passengers on East Coast routes a fast and comfortable service over many years. We are proud to support LNER’s celebration of this popular fleet.”

People are encouraged to share their own memories of this iconic fleet of trains by using the hashtag #225Day.

They are excellent trains worth celebrating. When I first set foot on one, they would have been around ten years old.

Was some good merch being handed out yesterday. Got a pin badge and a 91 shaped box of jelly beans, plus they had A3 prints available for a donation to CALM. I gather that there was additional 225 themed freebies for those in first class yesterday too.

Wasn't able to attend due to ear problems but might be able to see/photograph the newly named 91 later this evening.

So not to make use of the electrification project then? o_O

Somewhere I have a Mark 4 DVT pin that was given out on GNER’s launch day!

Flying Scotsman?
Lol, it was like a digital art thing of 91106 on a pretty snazzy red background - didn't take a screenshot so no source, but it was posted by a few people on Twitter. Shame I couldn't go, would look very smart in a frame on my wall next to the Azuma launch poster!

Managed to see 106 a few hours ago at London King's Cross doing 1N36 23:00 to York. Note the Swallow on the grill. Screengrab of video taken showing the nameplate.

This seems like the perfect thread to post this picture I got at Kings Cross during Easter weekend (I was there to see the Cally Sleeper) of three 225s next to each other!
