Hello all, Just had a thought on the train the other day, what is the longest non-stop gap between two stations on a service?
My guess is Euston to Warrington Bank Quay, but I think the East Coast Flying Scotman service runs non-stop from Newcastle? Could that be it?

Also whats the longest gap between two stations? not necessairly on the same line, could be from one line to another (as in whats the longest distance a train could travel from one station until it finally reaches another)

Just thoughts running through my head!
Cheers :)

Good point, but I think the Scottish Sleeper stops at Watford Junction/Crewe for pick ups, which Warrington beats both times. Not sure about the Riviera though.

The Caledonian Sleeper I believe is fast out of Euston running non-stop for around 8 hours, before stopping onward from there, so yes if that could be the longest gap ;)

No - they stop at Watford Junction, Crewe and Carlisle.

On the West Coast the 1630 from Euston to Glasgow Central calls only at Preston enroute- what's further, Euston-Preston or Preston-Glasgow? Nevertheless, it'll surely be beaten by the 0540 Edinburgh to Kings Cross calling at Newcastle only?

The Sleepers? The highland one has no official stops between Westerton/Stirling/Inverkeithing and Preston- though they do of curse stop and join at Edinburgh (split if going north) with the seated passengers from/to Fort William having a little walk. The lowland one goes non-stop between Carlisle and Watford Junction.

Newcastle to Kings Cross on the 0540 Flying Scotsman from Edinburgh.

Or technically, it's a Eurostar: St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord, non stop.

As for the station question: Lockerbie to Carstairs as someone has mentioned is the longest gap on one continuous line in the UK, but again, in a service originating in the UK, it is probably Haute Picardie to Gonesse (111km) on the way to Paris.

That Preston to Euston is one long journey, I guess that must be a long one. Does the driver switch while moving i.e. two do the that leg together or can one do it all alone?

I would hazard a guess that Newcastle - King's Cross is longer than Warrington - Euston. Approx 300 miles from Newcastle down to the smoke.

I expect it is just one driver. But Newcastle to Kings Cross is a longer hop.

Yeah 300 miles all on your own, I guess its only once a day, and rota's mean you probably only do it a few times a month. But still :P Thats a long way!

Eurostar to Paris is one driver the whole way too and that's their standard rota.

May be a bit confusing but what's the longest distance, between the shortest stations, such as, it's about 30 miles between Crewe & Stafford, with no stations in between now that Norton Bridge has closed, can anyone beat that?

Isn't Lille to Haute Picardie slightly longer, by about 4 or 5 km?

Yes, I always think of it as 300 (and 400 to Edin) though its actual distance on the ECML is 269 miles.
The three old metal lineside signs near Thirsk which announce "200 miles to London", "Mid point between Edinburgh and London" and "200 miles to Edinburgh" are all just a mile or so apart.

I think I see what you're getting at. Its kinda the same on the ECML where its only like 6 stations between Peterborough and Leeds. Suprisingly long gaps between stations.

According to my tables Gonesse is at "0" on LGV Nord. Haute Picardie station is at 111km. Lille is at 204km so it is very close but by these tables it is just slightly farther between Gonesse and Picardie. However taking a standing start from Lille into account and negotiation of the triangle just south at 230km/h it may take slightly longer to get to Picardie from Lille than fromthe 200km/h line speed at Gonesse. So yes it might "feel" longer by a few minutes.

Lockerbie to Carstairs is the longest gap between two consecutive stations on the network. Its 48 miles if I recall correctly.
