In all fairness I think the OP has been a little harsh here. Pre kids my wife and I did on one or two occasions have sex on the last train home and to our knowledge we never did anyone any harm.

Or over the PA: "Could the couple in the toilet in Coach B please refrain from..."

No-one should really care too much. I'm 19, stuff like this would make the journey a bit funnier, mine tend to be around dead-serious commuters or morons. As I said if it spread round the carriage, then "the awkward moment when the two said people re-enter their seats!" :p

People should lighten up. :D

I think you were right to stop them, XCDriver. While I might raise an eyebrow and a smile at it, it's ultimately not appropriate for several reasons.

What about parents with children, or elderly people, and the very religious? Sure, we shouldn't obsess over catering to those who might take offence at a natural act, but at the same time we need to respect that a toilet is a limited facility for those who need it - and it's not there to be commandeered by hormonal fits.

Yeah yeah, you'll all call me a stuck-up prude, but I'm really not: I don't have any moral objection to their behaviour, but at the same time I do think it's a tad inappropriate, and there's a time and a place for this sort of thing.

Train journeys aren't always particularly pleasant and it's the responsibility of the TOC to try and ensure, where reasonable, a decent travelling environment. If people don't object to, ahem, noisy intimacy, does that give me permission to hog the toilets and play a stereo speaker in there? In practical terms, it's the same end consequence. It's not really that fair.
I thought Europeans were liberal about intimacy. I didn't expect this to be a big deal. Don't people have sex on the Tube?
 Blimey!

I'd have knocked and asked if they needed a hand!

Probably likely to freak them out a bit and make them stop.

That way you wouldn't be feeling guilty by making them stop as they'd stopped themselves :D

Ah, this is where you're mixing up Europeans with the British

We don't go for that sort of thing over here.

Railway Byelaw 6(2):
No person shall behave in a disorderly, indecent or offensive manner on the railway.
The problem lies in whose opinion. In your view, sex on a train may be indecent or offensive yet in someone else's view, it isn't.

OP: Were you working or a "passenger"? If you were working then yes. If a passenger then only your opinion on the matter can answer your question. If you didn't like it then yes, but if you didn't care then live and let live?

Also depend if you work for the company or work in the company. There is a big difference where many drivers work for a train company, yet many people will want the company to succeed and put their life into their work.

Anyway, I recon you where right to spoil their fun...
It's were.
Where is a different word like "Where are they going?"

The Sexual Offences Act 2006 is your friend here, you could have shopped them to the BTP
Although they could have just said they were not doing anything. One word against the other and although one person is in a respectable position, there are two on the other team who could state they do not know each other.

The Europeans may well be; we're British.
Although I would suggest the majority of people who live in the UK are still "British", that number is growing smaller by the year. So much so I predict by 2030, "British" will be the minority in Britain.

You could say that about quite a few things though that some people find offensive and others do not. If you could escape a bylaw prosecuation by simply claiming that not everyone finds what you did offensive then it would make the bylaw pointless.

Just protecting the children and religious fundamentalists from you in the throes of passion

As i said before, i have more class. I wouldn't even consider doing such a thing in a public place, let alone a train lavatory. While i think the couple whom you interupted may have been enjoying themselves, its not for everyone. Just out of curiosity..i take it they were "young" I'm far to old and arthritic to indulge these days.....

The question that no one has asked, yet I bet you are all thinking it...was she hot? :D

But seriously, I guess it all just depends on the situation. I would have asked them to stop it if there were other passengers in the carriage, especially if those passengers were elderly (heart conditions darling) or children were travelling.

On the other hand, if it was an empty carriage with a low chance of passengers getting on then I would have let them go at it. If it was just a quicky then it would have all been over in a matter of minutes...and besides, no harm done eh (cue the moral jihadi police!).

Anyway, I hope you question them about the marital status and then suitably told them off if they werent married! :D

Well, not all of us :) Some of us would we wondering if the guy was cute.

I have to say I'd be right behind anyone having sex on a train.

And the award for "Most naïve post made in April" goes to Ivo...

Perhaps now would be a good time to point out that you and I have not met yet (for others' benefit) ;) Edit: My picture is in my profile...

Don't worry - I wouldn't either :p

You're easily young enough for it! And having an amputated leg is no excuse ;)

I thought he already answered that? :p

The girl was pretty hot though. Wouldn't have minded a go myself !!
