Hull has been named the UK's next City of Culture, beating Leicester, Dundee and Swansea Bay to the right to hold the title in 2017.

Hull, known for being the home of poet Philip Larkin, the Ferens gallery and the Truck theatre, will follow the 2013 City of Culture, Londonderry.

The UK government chooses a new destination every four years, with the aim of helping tourism and the economy.
Hull council leader Stephen Brady said winning was "a real game-changer".

Well that was a surprise as Swansea was considered the favourite :p

Is it not a contradiction in terms

Still it could have been a real dump like Darlington (if towns were eligible):p

What would have been your City/Town of choice ?

Dundee and Swansea never stood a chance. It was always going to be an English city - having a title that doesn't visit England until (at least) its third iteration wouldn't survive to that third iteration.

I am pleased and not surprised; Hull could be the Liverpool of the 21st century. Yes, it does have pockets of isolation and deprivation, but it also has two major theatres, a half decent concert hall, an ice rink, an aquarium, a premiership football team, two major rugby league teams, an athletics stadium, a number of free museums and a walkable waterfront; not to mention ferry connections to the continent. In fact, as a short break destination it seriously will give York a run for its money.

Blimey :o I lived in Hull for 3 years but I'm not sure I could ever consider it being competitive with York as a short-break destination...

That's because it isn't  - on a par with Darlington, Wakefield or Falkirk as a complete dump :p

I have to be honest, there are a lot of cities in the UK worse than Hull, certainly for a day out to. Very underrated place to explore. Hopefully the City of Culture malarkey will put them even more on the map.

Don't forget it's still got a bomb site from the last war

I was sorry that Dundee didn't win. Dundee was a dirty place up until the latter 70's, which is no surprise as it was a heavy industrial City much like Glasgow. However, it has cleaned itself up considerably and built up many worthwhile tourist attractions and it's only a few miles to the start of some really nice countryside to the north. The old Dundee & Newtyle railway trackbed has been built up as a fine trail for much of the way to Newtyle, with both the original incline route and the divergences that replaced them to follow. There is a lot of history to be found in and around Dundee,

Not sure about a comparison 'day out' with York, where I now live, but I lived in Hull for 9 years, up to 1988, and I would say it had/has a lot more character, especially along the river Hull and the High Street. I would agree it has in the past had a very blinkered view of its maritime history, though the Maritime museum is interesting along with the Transport museum and Ferens Art gallery.
It is a shame that Prince's dock was filled in with a blo++dy shopping centre as opposed to boats (see 50's photos of a prow overhanging the street at the end of the main shopping street!)
Good luck to the place.

When working on the track a number of years ago many of my colleagues had worked all around the country and in their opinion Hull was the worst place in the country.
Having worked around there many times I would not disagree with them.

It is Kingston upon Hull yes, the River Hull meets the River Humber just near The Deep.

Post boxes are as per everywhere else, but Kingston Communications was never amalgamated into BT, and so in Hull (and parts of the East Riding) phoneboxes are cream.

As someone who visits Hull quite regularly (the rugby league league I follow usually has around four or five teams there !) I think this is long overdue.

I love slipping into the Old White Harte for a beer after the match, then to the Royal Hotel for a bottle of Newkie Brown as I wait for the train,

and the sea folds, and folds and folds.......

OK, my comment about York was a little tongue in cheek, but consider this: York is acquiring a reputation as a very anti-car city and, at various times of the year is inundated with overseas visitors, race goers or stag and hen parties (or a combination of all three). Hull is certainly worth a visit, in the same way that Rotterdam is worth a visit if you've already been to Amsterdam.

To be fair all Hull's City Museums are free to get into - unlike those money grabbers in York.

The Maritime and Wilberforce ones are quite good from memory.
