Signals at Bolton now have RA indicators, will the dispatch method change?

Bolton had RA indicators under previous signalling although not regularly used since Virgin Crosscountry served the station.

They have simply been replaced but no change to dispatch method. May be used by TPE or Virgin (or whoever have the West coast franchise then) in the future if any London to Piccadilly services extended.

The Twitter feed has this pic of Blackpool North with the platforms demolished. The partly rebuilt 1 and 2 seem to be just visible on the left:

https://twitter.com/TheGNRP/status/931512149498789889

And here's a press release:

https://www.networkrail.co.uk/feeds/blackpools-railway-revolution-is-right-on-track/

One week in and Blackpool’s five-month railway revolution is already delivering for local people.

Since mobilising on 11 November Network Rail’s Team Orange has:
  • removed the tracks at Blackpool North station
  • demolished old platforms to make way for straighter platforms with an improved layout
  • decommissioned five signal boxes
  • started building a new platform at Kirkham and Wesham station and improving drainage
  • started working round the clock to install overhead power lines so electric trains can run
  • positioned 24 engineering trains along the route to support the upgrade
Meanwhile Northern is running a full replacement bus service to keep customers on the move while the railway is closed.

The 19-week project to upgrade and electrify the line between Blackpool and Preston, which started on Saturday 11 November, equates to a £1,800 investment for every person living in Blackpool

It is a key strand of the multi-billion-pound Great North Rail Project, a railway industry team effort to transform train travel for customers across the North. The upgrade will make the railway bigger and better to cater for the increased volumes of people forecast to want to use it in future.

Over the remaining 18 weeks Network Rail engineers will carry out vital upgrades to track and platforms at Blackpool North and Kirkham & Wesham stations. The signalling on both lines into Blackpool will be upgraded. This includes installing 84 new signals to make journeys more reliable.

Martin Frobisher, Network Rail’s London North Western route managing director, said: “We have made a great start to this phase of the Great North Rail Project. I am confident the short-term pain will be worth the long-term gain of transformed train travel in future.”

Sharon Keith, regional director at Northern, said: “This upgrade will pave the way for further improvements for our customers who, in the future, will benefit from brand new or fully refurbished electric trains – resulting in better journeys and, through our modernisation plan, better stations.”

Peter Broadley, executive director for customer, operations and safety at Virgin Trains on the west coast, said: “We know that upgrade works can impact on people’s travel plans. These particular works are being carried out by Network Rail to upgrade the railway between Preston and Blackpool. We have worked closely with Network Rail and industry partners to ensure alternative travel arrangements are in place. Customers travelling between London Euston and Blackpool should plan their journey in advance and check the National Rail enquiries website before travelling.”

Between Saturday 11 November and Sunday 28 January 2018 the railway will be completely closed between Preston and Blackpool North and Blackpool South stations.

Between Monday 29 January 2018 and Sunday 25 March 2018 the railway between Preston and Blackpool South will reopen but the railway between Kirkham & Wesham and Blackpool North will remain closed.

The upgrade forms part of the Great North Rail Project to improve journeys between Blackpool and Preston and across the north of England.

Noticed some new masts and associated dressings on the up and down from at Horwich Parkway towards Lostock today, this area had previously been left for a good while so this is great news, still no notiecable work at station level for bases apart from the marked one at Blackrod near to the entrance footpath.

Looks to be more and more appearing daily between agecroft and Kearsley as well. That along with a couple of Network Rail teams absolutely destroying a huge amount of trees that would be encroaching on the overhead line equipment.

Blimey, I hadn't envisaged them going quite as far as down to bare earth!!
Capability Brown eat your heart out!

Many blockades can be baffling to the public, as nothing seems to be happening to prevent trains running.
Not at Blackpool North!
A good elevated vantage point, by the way, is the café in Sainsbury's just opposite, or the car park above.

Can confirm that masts are in place at Layton station, unfortunately I don't have photos as I was on the bus going to work this morning.

I travelled Southport-Bolton-Salford Crescent and back by train today.

New mast base installed opposite Platform 1 at Bolton and possibly one opposite Platform 4.
New base (possibly two) installed by Bolton Platform 5 track south of Orlando Street bridge
Orangemen were working by the gates to the foot crossing immediately south of the M60, no idea what they were doing. The foot crossing north of the M60 remains blocked off.
Significant de-veging has been performed south of Clifton, Lumns Lane should be a good photo-spot now.
I think a new mast has been installed between Beaumont Rd bridge and Lostock, but it may have been there a while.

Gaps between bases Salford Crescent to Lostock Junction were (ie where there appear to be no bases on either side or only side of the tracks for significantly more than the approximate distance between bases, which is code for layman's estimate)
1. Salford Crescent Platform 2
2. Site of Pendleton (Old) station nearly to Cock Robin Bridge
3. Agecroft Road bridge northwards approx. quarter of a mile
4. At least one stretch between Farnworth and Squeeze Belly Entry footbridge
5. Bolton Platform 5 line north of Orlando Street bridge
6. Bolton Platforms 1 and 2 lines north of Orlando Street bridge
7. Bolton station footbridge to north (west) end of Bullfields Tunnel (the former for a large base between the bridges remains unconcreted)

I do not know if Farnwoth and Bullfields tunnels have "bases" (ie fixings) installed.

Three photos added to the Combined Volume here:

Had another trip in today HID to Salford crescent.

Counted the masts on my way back, Between Salford Crescent and Bolton, Circa 130 so that's around 20 gone up in the 7-10 days on the eastern-ish side of the track. Definite progress.

Network Rail have sent letters out to say that work between Lostock station and Bolton, including wiring, will be carried out from 18 November to end January.

It's the 22nd now so perhaps some wires are already up?

I been thinking for a while that some sections are ready for wiring, none noticed yet though, there’s bases appearing at the Bolton end pretty much everywhere where the branch is to Blackburn, I’d say Blackrod-Horwich-Lostock can’t be far off wiring

Some stretches ready for wiring, but gaps with no masts or masts without dangle bits. Bases not complete between Beaumont Road and Lostock station, looks like concrete rather than piles.

ALX400 has kindly sent a shot from Blackrod. It exemplifies why talk of putting wires up looks premature. In short, the route is peppered with gaps, some just one base long, some longer. I suspect that even where a run of (say a mile) is wireable it would be uneconomic to up tools, wire it then down tools. I recall the manager of the Salford-Euxton stretch saying at a presentation that wiring teams prefer a nice long run to go at.

Let's hope I'm promptly proven wrong!

I've added ALX's shot to his album here:

and to the Combined Volume here:

Thank you ALX400.

Journey this morning from Manchester Airport to Preston on a 156
Orangemen on the chord
Windsor Bridge North quite a few masts without danglies
Loads of cable troughing neatly in place since my August journey
Piles on the ground just after Clifton awaiting piling into ground
Orangemen everywhere at Kearsley station
Approaches to Bolton most steelwork looks up and what looks like a switching cabin?
Bolton to Lostock many masts missing and many on ground and some piles
Horwich to Chorley many endanglied masts in
Adlington orangemen a plenty and deveg
I counted 3 masts on or extremely close to Chorley statio
New style signals everywhere not just Bolton

Happy Thanksgiving even though I appreciate you're a Brit in exile not an American. Good progress; I see no reason why it shouldn't be finished by May '18
