Thanks for the photos and welcome to the forum.Hello everyone.
I took these at Waverley this afternoon. Platform 12 looks to be coming on very well.
For a split second, I thought the builder holding the 4 mph sign was real!

Do you know: were they out of order or turned off?In other news on Saturday night I achieved a new low as far as I am concerned in as much as none of the Waverley steps escalators in either Direction were working at 9:45 on Saturday night
Thanks to a late running Tweedbank train last night I made it from Platform 10 to Platform 18 in under 3 minutes.

It’s beginning to look a lot like…a platform. We are on track and working hard on platform 12 at #Edinburgh #Waverley ahead of its commissioning this weekend. The newly extended platform will accommodate longer trains.
Edinburgh Waverley's newly extended platform 12 is open for business. Platform was created to accommodate new longer trains that will serve @ScotRail #Edinburgh - #Glasgow service
But not yet wired, I think. I assume that will be done over Christmas?

I got off at Haymarket this morning but I’m pretty sure the 07:00 from Queen Street went into 14 at Waverley. The Manchester Airport trains go into 14-17 a lot when I’ve been there, and they’re sometimes 8-coach, so they’re definitely long enough to cope.
Plenty 7 car 380s running today from 12! Good to see it reopened at last. Was confused my train arrived in there this morning, had no idea where I was!
That's not too unusual in a terminating bay where speeds are low. A single contact wire can be found in depots and stabling areas too.Got a wee look at 12 when I alighted onto 11 earlier on; just the single overhead wire as opposed to two going top to toe on all the other platforms.
Edinburgh Waverley’s newly-extended platform 12 entered service last Sunday (December 10).
The longer platform is a key part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) which completed the electrification of the main Edinburgh-Glasgow, via Falkirk High, line in September.
Located to the western side of the station, the 204-metre-long platform will accommodate the new eight-car class-385 electric trains being introduced by ScotRail next year.
During the project, engineers demolished redundant station buildings on platforms 11 and 12 before extending platform 12 by 75m.
Around 3,500 tons of material was removed during the work, with 200m of track laid as well as new signalling and overhead powerline infrastructure installed.
Rodger Querns, Network Rail programme director, said: “Together with the electrification of the main Edinburgh-Glasgow line, the commissioning of the new platform 12 is another step forward in our journey to transform capacity at Waverley and build the best railway Scotland’s ever had.
“The electrification of our railway will allow us to run faster, longer, greener trains and cut journey times while increasing the number of seats available for passengers.”
The completion of platform 12 is the first in a series of enhancements being delivered at the station.
Over the festive season a new track-layout will be installed between platforms 10 and 11 to increase flexibility at the station and allow more trains to use the platforms.
Platforms 5 and 6, to the east of the station, are also being extended to 275m to accommodate the new 10-car trains due to be introduced on the main line between Edinburgh and London.
The infrastructure works, and the new rolling stock they will enable, will help to transform travel on both the East Coast main line and on the main line between Scotland’s two biggest cities.
The project will increase on-train passenger capacity and reduce journey times – by around 10 minutes between Edinburgh and Glasgow and by around 20 minutes between the two capitals.
The enhancements are being delivered as part of the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) and the Department for Transport-funded Intercity Express Programme (IEP).
14 was the universal platform for the Queen Street service even back in the 1970s.14 is pretty much the default platform for Queen St service
Network Rail engineers will be working over the Christmas and New Year holidays to enhance the railway through Edinburgh Waverley station and Princes Street Gardens.
On Christmas Day and Boxing Day, work will take place to realign the railway thorough platforms 10 and 11 and to replace sections of life-expired track on the lines between Waverley and Haymarket.
On New Year’s Day, engineers will install a new track ‘crossover’ layout at platforms 10 and 11 to increase flexibility through the station by allowing trains to move between the two lines.
The new infrastructure between 10 and 11 is the latest enhancement to be delivered at the station, following the commissioning of the new, longer platform 12 earlier this month.
The enhancements are being delivered as part of the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) and the Department for Transport-funded Intercity Express Programme (IEP).
Further phases of the project, to be delivered in 2018, will see the ‘crossover’ commissioned and platforms 5 and 6, to the east of the station, extended to accommodate the new 10-car trains due to be introduced on the main line between Edinburgh and London.
The infrastructure works, and the new rolling stock they will enable, will help to transform travel on both the East Coast main line and on the main line between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The project will increase on-train passenger capacity and reduce journey times – by around 10 minutes between Edinburgh and Glasgow and by around 20 minutes between the two capitals.
Rodger Querns, Network Rail programme director, said: “Extending Edinburgh Waverley’s platforms is vital to the long-term future of the station and paves the way for the introduction of two new state-of-the-art train fleets.
“Completing such a significant piece of engineering work in one of the country’s busiest stations is a significant challenge and delivering this work over the festive period will help to limit the impact of the project on passengers by taking advantage of what is a quieter time of year.”
Across Scotland this Christmas, Network Rail will complete more than £15m-worth of infrastructure upgrades with around 4,500 engineers working over 50,000 hours.
Signalling and tracks will be renewed and replaced at locations around Glasgow and work on the electrification of the network will also continue with new overhead powerlines and supporting equipment being installed on sections of the Stirling-Alloa-Dunblane route.
Across Britain, more than 32,000 railway staff will be out delivering £160m-worth of work creating more reliable infrastructure, reducing journey times and improving facilities and services for passengers.
I was in Waverley yesterday at 14.00, and was surprised to see how many passengers were waiting to join the xc train to Motherwell and Glasgow. I've no idea, of course, of their ultimate destination. Is this usual?
They are certainly busier and i see people with advances between Edinburgh and Glasgow with seat reservations ! Even catering now .There’s always a good few people waiting to board the XC services to Edinburgh. It’s normally the XC I go for if I’m going to Glasgow as the XC only fares are decent value.

Last summer i was on the late night XC HST and it was rammed back to Glasgow , a fair whack use the XC from Motherwell
That's quite a reversal from the usual XC pattern! There’s always a good few people waiting to board the XC services at Edinburgh. It’s normally the XC I go for if I’m going to Glasgow as the XC only fares are decent value.
Because Edinburgh-Glasgow/Aberdeen are at the periphery of their network with plenty of alternative capacity so there's no need to try and price people off the trains. That's quite a reversal from the usual XC pattern!
