Low Moor was a new station (the fact there was one there pre-Beeching is not relevant) so the presumption would be to meet all current standards. Blackpool North was existing so would be expected to do the best it could but not necessarily comply in all respects - effectively a grandfather right.

Probably coincidence but the way Blackpool's platforms are managed and the fact it's a terminus means it's pretty unlikely anyone could fall under a train without being noticed and the chances of that happening under a moving train are negligible - no commuters jumping on as the doors close here!

The Bolton News is reporting that there could be weekday closures in order to get the Electrification finished, although provides no further details as to when:
http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news...osures_AND_weekend_cancellations/?ref=mr&lp=9
ONGOING rail closures through Bolton could now affect weekday journeys as well as weekends.

Northern Rail says that heavily-delayed electrification work being carried out by Network Rail will continue ‘for the foreseeable future’, meaning trains are unable to run at weekends and also some weekdays.

cont...

Also there are a lot of upset people about the cutting down of trees between Moses Gate and Bolton:
http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news...ees_in__appalling__electrification_work_saga/
ANGRY residents are to have showdown talks with rail bosses after claims that electrification work on the line near their homes has ‘ruined their street’.

....

But neighbours in nearby streets have repeatedly complained about late-night noise, traffic disruption, and light pollution during the works.

At least a dozen people in Ivanhoe Street claim their houses have suffered structural damage from heavy vibrations caused by piling work.
And residents said they were devastated when trees which screened off the houses from the track and shielded them from noise were ‘ripped up’ last month – reportedly with no warning.

Many have described that as ‘the final straw’ and a residents meeting has been arranged by Yasmin Qureshi MP, and local councillor Jean Gillies to demand answers from Network Rail chiefs.

cont

Guess this must be the day the Bolton News had the transport reporter in!

Overhead Condition Renewals - OCR - ex WCRM OLE Alliance took in house after WC wrapped up
Am I right in thinking that this equipment is on standby to repair damaged OHLE, but in this case was being used to install the new?

Correct, but this is as and when required due to severity of damage, the bulk of the time both trains and teams are out on electrification projects nationwide.

Looks a lot better, that's a great view of the railway they have now instead of those boring trees on Ivanhoe St.

It's difficult not to have some sympathy with the residents of Ivanhoe Street; after all they have been subject to prolonged disturbance and disruption in consequence of the inordinately long time this electrification project is taking..........
....... On the other hand, if you aren't keen on trains, it may be a good idea not to buy a house close to the railway.

It's unlikely that anyone that lives in property joining the railway bought it before the railway was constructed. If they find the railway to be unacceptably noisy or disruptive, perhaps they should given this suitable consideration before taking up residence?

The main road at Moses Gate has, at last, partially reopened:

One lane of Bolton Road has reopened to traffic following repair work on Moses Gate bridge. Work is continuing following the burst water main last year and we thank you for your patience
From the twitter feed, a short video clip:

Completely agree!

I have this issue with those campaigning against Heathrow expansion and around our local station who complain about cars parking (legally) in the streets around the station due to the car park being less than half the size it needs to be (and public money being spent making better walking routes instead of adding an upper deck for parking). It was there before you... if you don’t like it, move again!

I live about 20m from the E&G line though... so in 20 years (or as soon as HSTs become regular) it’ll be me moaning!

Stalactites spotted just inside Bullfield tunnel (Moor Lane) at both ends on the up line, could not see the down line from the train.
Stalactites also in place on the down line, could see the west end from the train but difficult to see the east end as the tunnel entrances are offset, but managed to get a photo from Black Horse Street bridge. Will send photo to Dave

The obvious time for a closure would be during the school summer holidays when some people will be on holiday and plenty of buses available. What I don't understand is why the works repeatedly close the Atherton line? Surely the work could organised to get Manchester to Salford Crescent done so that strengthened services could run to Wigan during closures of the rest of the line. Perhaps the same around Bolton to allow trains from Wigan and Clitheroe into the station.

EXACTLY - Blitz Ordsall Lane Jct - Windsor Bridge South Jct -Salford Crescent- Windsor Bridge North Jct - god even energize it - then keep that open so you have a diversionary via Atherton - then finish off Deal Street Jct - Salford Central - Windsor Bridge South Jct - and obviously Windsor Bridge North Jct and onwards to Bolton-Euxton.

From Saturday (February 17) to Friday (February 23) overnight work will be taking place in Ashton area of Preston, installing overhead line equipment and railway fencing.

Wiring and fencing work west of Preston. I'm sure your regular posters will report back...

That was my thinking too, the NR bulletin says its required for 'Access to the Line', possibly bringing in supplies by rail?.

This must be the missing gap from the start of Tom Benson Way along TB Way to the UCLAN sports complex plus probably the fencing etc at StMarks. That would be my guess. I arrive home from the USA Friday lunchtime so will try and take some photos especially from Blackpool Road Bridge and along TB Way.

Can I ask if the stabling sidings at Leyland have been used whilst the Preston - Blackpool section has been worked on? I may be wrong but I thought there was some comment a while ago about using the old Leyland works sidings.

Thanks again to all the contributors to this best of threads especially LDECRexile for all his coordination of the information as it comes in..

Yes, there are several Northern diagrams that start/end there overnight.
It doesn't seem to be used during the day.
I guess it also means that if there is any delay finishing the carriage sidings at Blackpool, they can carry on using Leyland.

Planning application was only for temporary use, they said the site would be cleared again when they were done.
