Hi all. Might seem a daft question but if successful, do applicants go to derby for the year long training or will they be based at the applied for depot throughout training, with the odd day or two at the academy. I’m wanting to apply if a position comes up at depot near me however I live a good 3 hours from derby and not really wanting a 6 hour a day commute or to be away from home for a year.

Hi, I think they said training is for 12-16 weeks and not all of it is in a classroom I don't think. Are you applying for Leeds? Maybe someone who has already passed and got onto the course can tell you more but as far as I know the classroom stuff is in Derby, I think some of your training is at your local depot, but I don't know what the split is, and I don't know what happens if you live so far away - we here will all live within commutable distance of Derby & Nottingham (which are quite close together anyway). From reading other threads about other TOCs, sometimes while in training people are put up in hotels during the week then free to go home at weekends if the training is so far from the home depot, but honestly I don't know if that will apply for EMT.

It is Leeds yeah. Might see if I can find a phone number for HR and give them a ring tomorrow. Don’t want to apply and waste anyone’s time if it turns out I can’t accept a potential job offer.

The part in the job listing that got me thinking is where it says “The apprenticeship scheme is a yearlong qualification and you will train alongside other successful applicants at our Training Academy based in Derby.”

Hi there,

The first 12 weeks of training (Rules and Traction) is at the Academy in Derby, and then after your Rules and Traction exams, you’ll move to your Home Depot and complete your practical training with a mentor.

EDIT: It could be different for Leeds. On my course, our Leeds member did 5 weeks in Derby before completing his training in Leeds, but I’m not sure if it may be different now with the new apprenticeship scheme in place.

I have stage 2 assessments on Wednesday and am finally sitting down to go through the practice material. I read the document a few days ago but haven't tried the exercises yet. I'm bricking it though. I think I've been quietly putting them off and now have reached the point where if I'm going to practice then it has to be now. Having read the bits that essentially say, "it's not possible to replicate this test in an exercise so here's something that might help but not quite", I am getting pretty nervous. Am I any good at 2-hand coordination? I have no idea!

Stage 1 assessments - this is in the practice materials you should have been sent, I believe it's the first 40 pages.

Group assessments & speed interviews - exactly what it sounds like.

DMI - competency-based interview

Stage 2 assessments - the last 40 pages of the practice material you will have been sent

New this year: online assessments between the first two stages.

It tells you pretty much all this on the careers hub on their website if you log in and click on the job you applied for, you just need to disregard the dates that are specified as they only really applied to the first batch of people to go through.

Speed interviews is a new one on me, it might sound obvious, but i am not entirely sure what that involves.
More than one interview? With different people?

thanks Amanda for clarifying the stages, it didn't detail them with specific tests on the career hub.
I would also be interested to know about the speed interview, thanks

Everything you need to know is in this thread, have a look at page 52+. Do you know what speed dating is? Well it's like that. You have a question asked to you to answer in one minute, then the horn sounds and you move onto the next interviewer who asks you a question. 3 questions in total.

Hi everyone,

I've been invited to an assessment day this Wednesday - it all happened on very short notice as I have passed stage 1 with another TOC, so I received a last minute invite to Wednesday. However, Marie Perrygrove has given me NO information about what assessments are taking place on Wednesday. Please can someone advise me as I would like to prepare as best as possible.

I'm hoping it is the stage 2 computer tests.

Thanks,

Where is it?

If Derby = group assessments and speed interviews
If Nottingham = stage 2 assessments (computer tests)

Thanks Amanda.

It's in Derby. So am I right in thinking those assessments are only used internally, it's not until the stage 2 assessments (computer) that it will be the OPC tests again and nationally recognised?

Thanks

Yes, that's right. They don't count as a "life" until you get to the stage 2 tests.

Your e-mail should describe tomorrow as an "assessment day", the e-mail I got about it was worded like this (obviously this was for the one I attended which was last month):

"We are delighted to invite you to our assessment day, this is the only date we have available so we really hope you can make it. Please see details below:

Date: Monday 17th December 2018
Time: 13.30 (Please aim to arrive at least 10 minutes early)
Finish : Approximately 16.30
Location: Customer Service Academy, Hudson Way, Pride Park, Derby, DE24 8HS
On arrival: Please report to reception
What to bring with you: A passport sized photograph of yourself
Dress Code: Smart

Ok so, what happens at the assessment day? The day will consist on some group exercises and individual exercises; all designed to bring the best out of you. We want to see your personality and your passion for the job you've applied for!"

If it says something else then I dunno!

Has anybody got the Richard McMunn how to become a train driver books on psychometric test etc. I’m finding the numerical reasoning tests very difficult. I have forgotten everything I learnt in maths at school-absolutely everything.
Bloody worried.

I never read Richard McMunn but I did find plenty of free practice resources online. For example try this practice numerical test https://practicereasoningtests.com/practice-numerical-test and article explaining numerical reasoning tests in depth: https://practicereasoningtests.com/numerical-reasoning-tests.

Good luck.

Well guys, I didn't make it. :'( I stuffed up the grey square test, and I knew I'd done it so wasn't at all surprised to find out I'd failed.

On the plus side I only failed that one so when I reapply next time I'll only have to resit that one test (don't know if I would have to have another DMI though). I also know I could pass that test if I had another go at it.

@Smigg92, I forgot you were going to be there! Good luck!

At least I now have half a day unexpectedly free so am now awaiting my consolatory jacket potato to arrive in the cafe of my choice. :D
