A half-relevant question; will any be in service by 05 July, and if so what will the Airport to Newcastle be formed of? I'm thinking if these enter service from Monday 01 July (as has been suggested recently) then displaced 185s may bolster other Northern diagrams, especially on Summer Fridays. We're thinking of going to Newcastle on Friday 05 July, but don't want to encounter a wedged 3-car if we can help it otherwise we may drive up there. We could change to a Liverpool-Airport at Victoria if that'd be a longer train, but we'd be coming from Stockport so don't really want to encounter two changes of train. Thanks in advance!

One may be in service I think it all depends on how the training of crew progresses.

Trains from Liverpool tend to be quieter than trains from the airport.

The 2 Newcastle trains through Manchester Victoria are usually 15 minutes apart. If you are on flexible tickets, get on the Airport to Newcastle Train at Piccadilly, which arrives into Victoria first. If it is rammed, get off at Victoria and get on the next one 15 mins later. Usually same platform. Check running times first.

The from Liverpool train has more stops on the way.

Great to see that today’s MID-Carlisle-Bletchley-MID ran to time/early throughout. Fingers crossed that’s one of the two remaining runs needed by set six ticked off:)

68022 ‘Resolution’ was on the Crewe-Wavertree Junction light engine trips.

Meanwhile it was the turn of 68024 ‘Centaur’ on the Yorkshire trips, starting with 0B60 08:00 York to Scarborough, then 0B61/0B62/0B63/0B64/0B65/0B66 and finishing on 0B67 15:02 Scarborough to York.

Pic below of 0B62 at York.

Testing the CAF stock then, but no driver / conductor training? I thought Transpennine were desperate to get them in service?

I think the majority of drivers are now trained on the Class 68, but will still need a conversion course to the Mk5a sets. The first Nova 3 has only been with TPE for a couple of weeks, and I wonder if Depot staff are being trained first. I’m sure drivers and conductors will follow soon:)

Training schedule is pretty much this...

Driver Instructors on set 1
Fitters / depot staff on set 2
Drivers and guards on set 3

That’s sort of the plan anyway. When TPE are given the sets.

Thankyou. Do you know if it has started yet?

TPE are in possession of set 1 and yes I believe instructor training has begun or is about to.

Set 2 and 3 still belong to CAF and until they are handed to TPE no training of crews on those sets can begin.

The MID-Carlisle-Bletchley-MID mileage accumulation trip ran Wednesday and is out again today. Quote below from Tuesday that only two more trips were needed, so hopefully TP06 will soon be the second set handed over to TPE:)

Every went fine with the run today, hopefully only two more to go for Set 6

Which is urgently needed to get fitters/depot training started proper.

Only 11 more sets to get ready then for December timetable i presume.
Although some diagrams might get swapped from July onwards with Class 185s.

Perhaps now that CAF have hit the winning formula with TP09 (and with TP06 to follow soon) the same tweaks can be replicated across the other sets reasonably quickly.

and then 0B65 arriving in York in the pouring rain. Just after I took this there was some lighting that temporarily knocked the signalling out!

They are. Rumour is TPE accepted the Mk5 set below the condition they wanted to, just to push it into service.

Of course they are, what with all the extra costs they'll incur. CAF on the other hand need to hand them over in order to get paid.

Hopefully the training programmes are signed off and agreed with unions.

028B9EAC-12DA-4BB3-BDAA-1ADE20C61EDA.jpeg 68030 ‘Black Douglas’ (a score for York) in the Parcel Siding as a Class 185 departs for Man Air.

68030 had earlier worked over from Manchester on 0P68. Looks like 68024 for 0M68 later:)

68024 was still in platform 2 at lunch time, has 68030 replaced the Scarborough loco, 68032?
68030 ‘Black Douglas’ worked straight back on 0M68! Seems a bit of an odd move! So, Scarborough loco is still 68032 ‘Destroyer’ and York loco is 68024 ‘Centaur’.

The timescale given by the tweet is ‘will enter service in coming weeks’.

I think that’s a bit of a dramatic shortening of the approximately 12 weeks from now previously quoted, but let’s wait and see, fingers crossed you are right:)

The Cally sleeper stock surprised us all with its purported entry into service too :D

The tweet doesn't state "next month". Staff training is only just getting under way and only one set has been accepted, so far.

Instructor training to start next month, with driver training starting end of June into early July, 1st set expected to run at some point in July. Only one set has been accepted and I think three are needed so all the relevant staff can be trained.

I read ‘in coming weeks’ exactly the same way, I’m sure if it was ‘May’ that would have been clearly trumpeted;)

At least they're not saying "imminently" as Scotrail do for their refurbished Mk3 sets, then another month later still waiting.
