Doesn't look like it's gonna pass the Geoff Marshall elbow test
I didn’t know who he was until you mentioned him!

Maybe it won’t pass his test, but it will definitely pass the ‘sjpowermac most interesting train serving my hometown in the past 20 years’ test;)

Interesting that seat alignment with the windows is good in one picture, yet very poor in another picture.
Really should be able to stagger seating bays, airline seats and luggage storage so most if not all seats align with the windows.

Is there any reason the Nova 3 sets only have 5 x MK5 coaches. Are there any plans to extend to 6 coaches if (or should I say when)
passenger numbers increase ? I'm sure when the TPE was using Class 45 and Class 47 traction, the trains were at least 6 coaches long.

I’ve only seen the interior of the Mk5a from peering through the windows. It looked to be an impressive design. Certainly the coach looked very airy.

I suspect it will also be very quiet in there when compared with a Class 185, unless you are unfortunate enough to be travelling with enthusiasts droning on and picking faults;)

Anyhow, yesterday there was a full day of Nova 3 training between Crewe and Wavertree Junction. Today, the trains are booked Crewe-Liverpool Lime Street:

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/sea.../28/0000-2359?stp=S&show=all&order=wtt&toc=TP

There are paths in Crewe-Wavertree Junction for Monday to Wednesday, and we also have the pass-out trip over the Pennines on Wednesday 31.07.2019

Entry into service looks to be getting close now:)

I’m slightly surprised nobody on here appears to know what the Geoff Marshall elbow test is. It just means there is a surface for your elbow along the window sill to lean your head against your hand. So pretty much it looks like there isn’t any flat window sills, like on 185s. Pacers fail the test terribly. It is a shame but not the end of the world

back in the 1980s the service was:

Liverpool to Newcastle one hour.
Liverpool/North Wales to Scarborough the other.

It’s worth remembering too that four car Class 150/2 units operated the Scarborough trains from 1987 onwards.

Here is the present service York to Manchester most of the day (with minor variations in minutes):

xx:09 Newcastle to Liverpool
xx:23 Newcastle to Man Air
xx:38 Scarborough to Liverpool
xx:53 Middlesbrough to Man Air

Once the Nova 1 and Nova 3 trains are in traffic those will all be five coach trains. A big increase in capacity over the three coach Class 185s (and 158s before them).

If anybody wants to discuss future 6-car services once the new stock is in service, I have created a specific thread regarding this under "Allocations, Diagrams and Timetables"

05 August isn't long away now - let's hope TPE can stick to this. Will it be only the morning services, or is that just to give us an idea of the day's workings? the 09:41 from Scarborough should then form the 12:56 back according to RTT

Latest I have heard is 23/09, 2 sets in service, December timetable change, 4 sets in service, Feb 07 2020, full service on the Scarborough’s,
Let’s see what happens !

More fun over the Pennines booked for Wednesday 31st July 2019:

5F68 03:45 Longsight-Liverpool Lime Street
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/N04252/2019/07/31/advanced

5E68 05:04 Liverpool Lime Street-Scarborough (09:06)
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/N04251/2019/07/31/advanced

5M68 08:31 Scarborough to Longsight (12:34)
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/N04253/2019/07/31/advanced

Unless I’m reading things incorrectly, a bit of magical timing going on;)

I assume the trips are a conclusion to the latest round of driver training.

Does anyone know what is running on these tomorrow please? Also, which end is the loco on?

Dull weather but a fantastic image.

For anyone further east, I understand the train turned on the Methley triangle so the loco will be leading into York/Scarborough.

Am I the only one who would've been concerned had this not run given next Monday's the entry into service?

68025 with TP04 on 5E68 05:06 Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough. In addition to being a passing out turn for drivers, catering staff boarded at York to familiarise themselves with the new trains.

A bit of sun would not have gone amiss;)

Before anyone complains, there are some Mk5a coaches behind 68025, I promise;)

The current plan for new trains intro is as follows...

Ad hoc Mk5A on Liverpool to Scarborough (05:56 from Liverpool, 0941 from Scarborough) from 5 August.

The main day to watch is Monday 21 October: a class 802 on Liverpool to Newcastle and back diagram will enter service.

4x Mk5A trains in passenger service from that day as well on Liverpool to Scarborough. Will remain as 4 sets until spring 2020.

Plus the 397s start on that day on select diagrams on the WCML.

Is this still the latest plan, or have the 4 diagrams from October now been pushed to December?

68025 on 5M68 09:32 Scarborough to Longsight.

I think the emissions profile for the noise is about double;)

Video uploaded (almost) live from the station:)

Some more pics of 5M68 this morning. The first is of the DT crossing Scarborough Bridge, York.

The second shows a close-up of the Class 68/Mk5a interface. Can anyone clarify the purpose of the different connectors? I’m guessing the top ones are loco to DT control, the lower grey one (adjacent to the ETH cable) is perhaps carrying feeds for the specialist CAF kit in the cab?

Unintended selfie in the bottom one showing a detail of the DT.

I have to say again, these look fantastic trains. I think most of the seats will have a good view.

Those are excellent photos.

But one question.: ae the buffers meant to have a gap as in that photo, or was the screw coupling just needing to be tightened up?
